Yep, I started making my own. I get nervous about what's being put on my face.
All I do is mix a tablespoon of oil or aloe vera with a tablespoon of liquid soap (I use Dr Bronners almond scented which I LOVE), into a cup or two of boiled/cooled water. You could soak a roll of paper towels, I guess, but I don't like the thought of bleached products on my skin, and I also don't like using/wasting paper towels. What I did was I got a package of baby-wipes (I got Nature Babycare ECO-Sensitive Unscented Wipes) and just saved the cloths after use. I think they're flannel. You could just cut up whatever kind of cloth feels nicest on your skin (while wet, remember!) into the right sized squares. Then I throw them in the wash in one of those mesh laundry bags you use for fine washables.
I keep my oil/soap/water in a pump bottle and moisten just before using. That way I don't have to worry as much about using any kind of preservative. If I did, I'd probably just throw in a little alcohol, vinegar, or tea tree oil.
I made this a while ago and used a tsp of alcohol, and although it was (surpisingly) gentle enough on my face, I didn't like the smell. So this time I used a little lavendar tincture I'd made with vodka that I didn't know what to do with. Smells AWESOME! I'm excited about trying other yummy smelling essential oils - I've got a big bottle of sweet orange eo which I use for freshening which might be nice while I take my makeup off.
Anyway, I hope this gave someone else some ideas. Loving this! |

Liquid soap?? Isn't that drying on your skin? |

As much as I love the Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap especially peppermint for showering, It has a very alkaline ph around 9 as I recall, I would be wary of using it as a face wash. |

Oh, thanks, I had no idea! It seemed completely fine on my face - I have normal to oily skin so that might be the reason.
I'm pretty sure I typed the wrong measurements. I actually use waaaay less soap & oil than what I'd indicated. More like a tsp of each.
And it does look like the ph is 9 - I added a few grains of citric acid to take it down. I read about others who use witch hazel & glycerine, so there are lots of different ways to go with this.
In any case, I do think they're awesome! Its so easy that I'll be trying different concoctions each time I make it. |
