Trying out a new hairdresser tomorrow. Eeek!

Am I the only one who gets rather stressed about going to the hairdresser? It's very rare that I come out with something that I really like, and more often than not I come out about around $150 lighter. Not happy! I have yet to come across a hairdresser whom I am 100% happy with (or even close to that). Perhaps the problem is not them - rather my hair and my lack of talent at doing anything nice with it Laughing

I've got an appt tomorrow afternoon at this newish place that looks kinda funky and I'm developing second thoughts at this very moment! I'm going with the "director" option (as opposed to "stylist", "senior" etc) and I'm hoping that he's good. I have no idea what I want apart from the fact that I want something "different" but not different enough to include a fringe.

I wonder if it would be too late to cancel tomorrow morning Embarassed

Hi Mabsy,
I tend to stick with the same hairdresser for years and am always satisfied with the results. The best advice I can give you is to ask people who you think have great hair who does it.

I also think jumping from one stylist to another leads to never being satisfied. My hairdresser has become a friend and she knows what my likes and dislikes are. She is also familiar with my hair texture and knows what cuts just won't work on me.

Althgough I have kept to the same stylist for the last 8 years, I like to try new styles. I think it keeps us exciting and fresh. As long as you are not getting a crew cut, most styles should be salvagable.

But, one thing I have learnt is that we should morph into a totally new hairstyle gradually. For example, I had really straight hair some time ago but wanted to change my look - quite curly kind of shoulder length thing. My stylist advised me to take a intermediate perm - just a body perm first - once that grew out, I then had tighter curls. Most of friends accepted the gradual new looks very well. If I had jumped to the curly one the first time, I think they would have not liked it too much, and that includes me....

Just wear your new style with punk and attitude and you will be fine. Nothing ventured nothing gain.

I know exactly where you are coming from, Mabsy.
I move around a lot and so I'm always having to try and find a new stylist. I've only ever found one stylist that I was happy with. Trouble is that I live too far away now to visit her salon. I get really, really nervous before an appointment and I'm never happy with what they do to my hair. It always looks great after they've spent an hour or so styling it but I find it impossible to recreate the same look the following day. I don't have the time or patience to spend too long fiddling about with my hair so I've had to learn to live with the fact that it's better if I stick to simple styles that require minimum effort. Boring but it saves a lot of tears and tantrums! Very Happy

I used to avoid getting cuts because I always ended up miserable or just plain "blah" afterwards. I salon-hopped a lot; "hopped" because I think I've found the place for me. I can say "I don't know what I want" or "I want this, what do you think?" (re: bangs on a round face) and they make it work. Plus in my hoppings I found a second salon for when I want something more "playful" (i.e. specially-styled for no extra charge!), and neither places break the piggy bank.

Most important in any relationship is communication! Let the stylist know if you're freaked out, what your hair does that you hate, cuts you've hated, whether you're more conservative or trendy, how much time you want to spend doing your hair, etc..
It scores bigtime if the stylist pulls out a big book of magazine clippings because I am terrible with hair terminology. As lianne pointed out, pictures go a long way.
Before and during, I feel much better if the stylist explains what he/she is doing. I shouldn't be expected to know how something will turn out, nor should I have to sit in extreme terror for an hour to see the results.
And finally, the stylist should teach me how to style my hair afterwards. If I have to buy a bunch of new products or spend half an hour just to look decent, it was probably the wrong cut for me to begin with <--bad signs.

Free bang trims also helped my decision. Very Happy

kei, where do you go? I go to DN & Co. on cook road, beside the clinic. I'm pretty happy, but willing to try someplace new...Never had them teach me to style my hair before.

Derek London Haute Coiffures Ltd. - I've had Millie and Shey cut my hair, both are excellent stylists. I have a card from Shey for 25% off (so about $30 for the cut) if you'd like to give her a try. Derek (London) is usually around and we've chatted both times I've been in--very easy-going and charming man.

umm...love to try, but I can't afford that at all. I have $0 coming in and whole lot going out for school/gym/phone.

I usually pay $30 for a cut, $60 for cut and colour! (I get student discounts and pity discounts from her)

I meant after the 25% discount the total cost is $30.

Edited to add: I also don't like to colour my hair, so I can regulate more funds towards the cut. I think I've had it coloured 3x in my life up to now.

I just get a few foils. I used to be super light blonde when I was young and now I'm a brownish blonde colour so I like the streaks to give my skin more colour

Lianne - EVERY stylist should teach you how to recreate the look at home, otherwise you shouldn't put yourself in that person's hands. If they won't take the time to show you how to do the same look at home, don't EVER allow that person to touch your hair again!!!!!!!! OMG, I can't believe this. No wonder you guys get antsy when going to a new stylist or trying out a new look. Holy cow, this just horrifies me!

My guys great. When I take in pictures he normally says No, you wont like that. Too much work etc. He knows I am a brush and go kinda gal. I don't even use hairdryer most of the time. Thats why when I tentatively went in with my picture and told him I wanted it short and choppy I nearly fainted when he said OK. He said it would be easy even for me and guess what it is. Its great having someone who understands me.

All of you hold good thoughts for me. I'm going to a new hairdresser tomorrow.

I had my hair cut and colored before I left for my cruise in December and when I got back, the first appointment my hairdresser could give me was mid-February. Naturally, my hair needs coloring now and cutting, plus I have to go to an important meeting Feb. 3-5.

The day spa where I go has a new hairdresser and my husband went to him and has never had a better looking style.

As it turns out, he used to work in Austin... and when he worked at the salon where my current hairdresser works, he did her hair. So, he's definitely not inexperienced.

I talked to him the other night when I was at the Day Spa and he seems to have really good ideas and told me to bring a picture or pictures, which I had already put together.

So, tomorrow is the day (Saturday). Hold really positive thoughts for me, please.

Sorry for late reply. You were kind of right. I did go out last night and didn't really make it back home till sometime early this morning. But I am glad to say that I DID NOT purchase any new makeup or accessories to go with the new do! Phew!

Ok, onto the hairdresser. In a word - brilliant! He seriously knew what he was doing. He told me what was wrong with the haircut I had at the moment (which was basically a straight but because I was trying to grow out a short hairstyle) and told me exactly what he was going to do and why. He took into consideration skin color, eye shape/color, hair texture and the fact that it has a bit of a natural wave in it and I don't like to straighten it, etc

The only restriction that I had for him was that I did not under any circumstances want a fringe and that I also didn't want to go too short. Anyways, he did my hair and showed me a few different ways to style it ("work", "funky", etc) and then showed me how I can actually have a fringe anyway. Well, one of those "across the forehead" ones not a straight cut one. Guess what!? Turns out the style I love most is the one WITH the fringe Rolling Eyes

He also, and this is what was fantastic, asked me about the hair products I already have and instead of trying to sell me stuff he told me which of the ones I already have I could use to recreate this style. He finished off by telling me that he thinks that it would look better still if I went two shades darker and that it's something I might want to think about doing just for a change.

Anyways, I can't speak highly enough of him and I'm definitely going back there again and probably getting the colour done as well.

Thank you for all your replies - I felt a bit silly being stressed about something that seems so trivial.

I am so relieved and pleased for you. It sounds like you had a really positive experience. I am glad you like your hair and have found a hairdresser you can talk to and that took the time to understand your needs. It is not silly to worry.

I have had some horrendous hair experiences. Stylists that look like they are listening and nod in all the right places. You leave the salon unsure but thank and tip them anyway. Then you wake up in the morning and within an hour the tears arrive because your hair looks nothing like it should and you cant do a damn thing about it.
