Can anyone recommend a good sunscreen for dry skin for my Mum? I'm looking for something that is preferably physical but don't mind too much if it's mixed with part chemical. My mum has tried the obagi sunshield spf50 but finds it too drying on her skin, I really disliked the NIA24 ss for various reasons, so that is not an option either.
I want something that is primarily a suncreen, not a moisturizer, that would work well with the obagi system any recommendations will be much appreciated. |

I've ordered Devita from vitacost.com (thanks to this forum) and had it shipped oversea. It was the cheapest place to buy from, they had it on special, it was almost 50% off! so it was worthwhile to buy a few bottles at a time. It was cheaper than buying it from Wholefoods which was the only place I could locate it. They had sold out every time they restocked the shelves.
I found it be more moisturizing than any other sunscreen I've tried. I use it during winter. |

You could try Invisible Zinc ,they sell onnline in the UK through Selfridges.
They do a tinted moisturuzer sunscreen, It has lots of zn oxide and although a little sticky, doesnt leave your face dry  It gives my face quite a nice sheen to it.

| I've tried Invisible Zinc, compared to the feel of Devita I didn't like it at all. I found it to be thick and heavy. The tinted version only comes in 2 shades and it's really hard to get off at the end of the day. The devita is a much nicer sunscreen with the same % of zinc. However, having said that your Mum may like it, the tinted version does look like and feel like a foundation. |

Thanks for the replies ladies, I checked out the invisable zinc, they've got quite a selection, I like the look of their tinted lip balm. I don't think my Mum would be interested in their tinted ss but she may like their environmental protector though, at least my Mum can pop into selfridges and try it out first.
Devita is actually on my to try list, I'm going to get some of that very soon (still got loads left of my obagi spf50), I can let her try mine and then get her some of that if she likes it. |

Hi, Angelo..
I use devita solar SS and smashbox spf 15 powder ( it has 11% zinc ) I love them very much and I never get sunburn and not greasy at all for whole day.. |

| ^ RS is probably right about this. I have oily skin and feel fairly comfortable using the Devita moisturizer. And I'm someone who never uses moisturizer, so that should tell you something. |

I have dry skin and was fine with Invisible Zinc. However, it will leave a white cast. If you can work with it then great, but for me it was too much for everyday use.
I now use photostable chemical sunscreens that contain mexoryl sx/xl. Kiehl's UV Protective range is good for dry skin (no alcohol), but for everyday use I still love Vichy Aqulia Thermal SPF 15- photostable with high PPD ( 18 ). Great for dry skin because its a moisturizer.
I would recommend using a good antioxidant serum underneath any chemical sunscreen though. I use C E Ferulic every morning and night.

I'm now wondering if devita will be any good for Mum? I have oily skin and can go without moisturizer, the obagi spf50 goes on to me like a moisturizer (almost looks oily) and dries with matt finish, on my Mum, it dries her out while she's still trying to spread it over her face  |

Thanks for the tip off RS. My only concern with this is that you're not supposed to use a moisturizer while on the obagi. |

LondonJamie: Is the vichy aquila thermal an all chemical ss too? I'm looking for something more on the physical side but that could be mixed with both physical and chemical. I don't think using a chemical ss with obagi is recommended.
Finding a ss that is both moisturizing and that works with obagi is what is making it so difficult I think. I only used to use ss if I went on hoilday, I tended to buy by brand, texture and smell so I never looked at whether I was using physical or chemical ss, it's only now that I have used obagi and read that it should be used with physical ss that I bothered to look into the different types of sunscreen. I have no problem using chemical ss on my body but like to have at least some physical ingredients in my facial ss. After doing a quick search, I've realised that I was using chemical ss on my body but one of the two brands I mainly stuck to, did contain titanium dioxide, 8th ingredient on the list |

You are right. Have you tried the Clarins Day screen? Read the reviews here:

If you ever shop at Paula's Choice get a sample of the Cellular Defense Daily moisturizer with SPF 25. It is pretty moisturizing but not as invisible as Devita or Clarins Day screen.
Another good option is a tinted moisturizer with SPF such as the one by Paula's Choice. It is called Sheer matte tint SPF 20 (a purely physical sun protection).
If you mom experiences flakes from Obagi then either Devita or Clarins is better.

Not at all RS, I really appreciate the suggestions, I've also looked up Elta MD and Suntegrity, there are actually a good few out there, although most are not easy to come by in the UK.
Just a case of working out which order to try them in |

I read through all the replies again and I've been thinking that perhaps the Invisible Zinc because it's available in the UK may suit your Mum the best. I always found it to be too greasy and slightly too thick for me, but your Mum's skin is drier. It might be better for her to test a little on her skin since it's available at Selfridges, rather than going through all the expense of having something shipped to the UK only to find it doesn't agree with her. It's so hard tying to find a physical sunscreen that suits your needs.
Like LondonJamie wrote, it does a leave a bit of a white cast, or she has the option of the tinted version. It's 19% zinc. |

| I use PCA Skin Hydrator Plus SPF 30, and my dry skin likes it fine. While I have no clue as to its PPD, I think the sun protection is adequate because I haven't developed any new freckles since using. I am currently on my 2nd bottle. HTH!! |

| I've tried a couple and I love love love Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30. It's not cheap but I have dry skin and it keeps my skin moist but not greasy at all. It also has other anti-aging goodies in it. Selfridges stock it and you can also order it online. |

I'd never even heard of this brand before you posted this fat_swan, it is also not too difficult to get hold of too, thanks for the rec. Lots of ss for Mum to test  |

Thanks for the rec RubyP, I've just looked at the ingredients and it seems that this is a chemical sunscreen (please correct me if I'm wrong), I'm really looking for a physical ss or one that is mixed with both physical and chemical. |

| I have used Obagi for 9 years and it seems to work. I'm 56 and I get compliments on my skin often. I also have 4 friends who use it and they also get many compliments on their skin. One of the products is blender and you add Retina A into the lotion each night when you use it. Retina A is a great product (prescription). I use Obagi every other day. The Retina A can be drying. I would recommend using it for anyone 40 and over. |

Thanks for the tip, I've advised my Mum to keep the use of the retin a/blender to 2-3 times per week, she has naturally dry skin anyway so the retin is definately not helping on that front. |
