Does anyone know which steamer is good? I noticed that the main difference is that some (like conair, revlon) are like bowl shaped and faces up, and others (like ozone) shoots steam downwards. Which ones are good? They always use the onces where the steam shoots down at your face in the spas..

The best steamers are the ones that beauty therapists use. You can buy these easily at beauty supply stores. Ive noticed most beauty supply stores don't even bother to check credentials.

There are some table top ones but I haven't come across one that last. Don't bother with the steamers like conair, black and decker or any of those department store white goods variety. They produce very little steam and are very uncomfortabe to use. You're better off just pouring boiling water in a bowl and creating a tent wih a towel instead.

As odd as this sounds, a rice cooker is absolutely the best steamer that I've used.
No messing around with pouring boiling water in a bowl, use it anywhere, and clean it out well...

i just bought a mini steamer that mimics the one used in salons.. it's meant to have ozone theraphy which helps kill bacteria. I'm OK with it so far.

Not sure if it's worth the price. everytime after i steam my face.. it doesn;t really leave much moist on my face.. the moist sort of evaporate immediately after i stop the machine.. but i haven't use it long enough to tell the difference.

Maybe a steamer that mimics the 'the bown of hot water' version might be cheaper n better.. if u can get one for less than 20..

I have the Conair one...it is uncomfortable to use. I ended up using it in the winter to hydrate my nasal passage like a vaporizer instead.

I have seen one by Panasonic made in Japan, sold in Japan, it's a portable version that is almost the same like the one they use in professional salons. It costs a pretty penny, but very well reviewed in Japan. I hope they will launch it in North America some time in the future because I really want it!! Very Happy

How in the world do you use the rice cooker as a steamer...? Set it to cook but leave the lid open?!

I completely agree with the bowl of boiling water method. Don't need another piece of equipment (to store and clean) -- bowl in the dishwasher and towel in the washing machine! Smile

I used to do the boiling water in the pot method... I don't think it did anything for my skin though the steam does help relax me though...

yeah you can get all the fancy ones but my nose/throat steamer is great for my face too....I love the idea of the rice cooker...
Anyway personal nose/throat humidifiers can be cheaper than face ones and work really well as the steam is smooth and 'fine' plus you can use it for your throat or nose....
but in a pinch a bowl of steamy water with a few drops of essential oil and a towel over your head works well too!

I agree with everyone on the good old fashioned bowl and towel method. Why waste your money on something that is so simple and works just as well.

I too agree with the bowl of hot water and a towel but I have added organic green tea bags to my hot water based on a post on EDS from Kassay. I like the results better with the green tea - what it does exactly I don't know.

I've had mixed feelings about steaming. I have an old facial steamer, but I rarely use it because I think I've read somewhere that they're no longer considered a good thing? Mine directs the steam, and it gets uncomfortably hot in some spots, so I keep moving my face around. I think the rice steamer might even be better because it steams over a wider area.

What exactly is supposed to be the benefit of steaming? It's something I have never done or really thought about.

I second critic on the panasonic ionic steamer. I purchased mine a little over a year ago and love it.

I forget which web-site though, the only thing is the directions did not come in English at all, lol! Very Happy

This is an old topic but, since it's been revived, here's a review of my ionic facial (and also hair) steamer: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=31314

I love using the facial steam function for 5 minutes or so before I do clay masks just to help draw out the impurities. Also works very well when done before extracting blackheads. Very happy with it!

Thanks for the info on the Panasonic Ion Steamer, Critic and Doll. It looks like it comes from Malaysia?

Mabsy, that's a great review. I hadn't thought of steaming my hair. Do you use it while your hair is dry or after a shampoo? I have the Caruso Ion hair setter, have had to replaced it several times over the past 20 years but wouldn't want any other hair setter.

I'm with Kassy in that I'm running out of places to put stuff in my bathroom/closet, but I'm going to do some more research and will probably end up with one.

catballou - I've used the hair steamer attachment a few times and only ever when I have a hair mask on. It's meant to help the mask penetrate into the hair shaft. Not sure if it does but my hair sure did feel soft afterwards (I used the L'Occitane hair mask Very Happy).

That makes sense, Mabsy. I've been using an electric heat cap that was recommended in one of the DIY threads, along with a hair mask, and it really makes a difference in the liveliness and shine of my not so naturally blonde hair, especially during winter.

I've been busy today, but I'm seriously thinking I want an ionic face steamer, one that's not too much trouble to set up so I'll use it often.

I love steaming my face after doing a deep oil cleanse. My skin is absolutely flawless afterwards!
