Hello,
I am just curious if by chance sun tanning or going to the tanning booth will make our pores and scars worse? Or will it only age the skin over time?
I am currently using Epidermx and Silkia Camellia Oil and I am trying to rid myself of some old acne scars and reduce the pores on my cheeks, but since I started this, I cannot use my sunless tanner any longer because the Epidermx takes it right off, and I use the Epidermx everyday.
So I thought maybe I should just tan instead, but I am wondering if it will worsen my pores and scars to go tanning, or won't it make a difference?

Thank you for your time Smile

it will damage your skin drastically. I am 25 with several wrinkles forming due to tanning beds. I used them because they did help clear up zits, but the wrinkles and damaged eyesight are definitely not worth it!

Using epidermx you'd have to tan more to get the desired colour because you'll be exfoliating the skin off, which makes you lose colour quicker.

I do use sunbeds for a few weeks before a holiday. Just to get a start on my tan. But i always wear a sunscreen on my face. I'm not to bothered about a to taned face. But i love having brown legs. So i always protect my face.

Maybe you could continue to use your self-tanner on your body, and use a makeup/powder bronzer to get the desired color on your face?

Just a thought.

Tanning is such a deceiving thing. It camouflages cellulite, gives us a sun-kissed, healthy look, but if you get that look from tanning you can just consider that your skin is crying out for help. I did it for years either through basking in the sun or religiously going to tanning beds. I am fair and freckled, but habitual tanning over the years allowed my skin to become very dark. I always got comments on how dark I could get even though I had such naturally fair skin. However, if I could go back and take it all away, I would. I am grateful that I have not had any skin cancer growths to date, but I have had a few scares. I've had some biopsies done on some precancerous sites. Sunbathing also decreases the elasticity in our skin which keeps our skin youthful. When the elasticity starts to diminish that's when the wrinkles become noticable. My stepson's girlfriend is so addicted to tanning that at 22 years old the skin on her face looks like leather. It is not in the least bit attractive. I really don't know why she does this. Yet, I wonder if people ever thought the same about me at one time or another. This year, I have vowed not to do the tanning bed thing. I have spent a fortune on Obagi products to help reverse some of the damage and I am well pleased. Tanning never reduced pores or helped to diminish scars for me...in fact, scars just get darker and also are more suseptable to developing cancerous cells due to the sensitivity of the skin that makes up a scar. I am sure you are a young person. Rethink this tanning thing and use bronzers or self-tanners or like one posted recommended a bronzing powder. Oh and by the way, the Obagi has reduced my pores dramatically and also removed sun spots and freckles. I bet there are other products out there that you could rely upon to help reduce the pores, too, that are not quite as expensive as what I use. So...I just thought you might want to hear the opinion of an old pro. If I could do it all over again...I would protect my skin from the sun just to go out to walk the dog or take out the garbage. What is odd is that I finally decide to make this commitment to protect my skin, and my husband and I are building a house that will have an outdoor pool. Eeek! Guess I'll just have to zinc it up or I will undo all that I have recently tried to undo. Good luck to you!

What a interesting post Allicsirp. It does make you think twice about going on sunbeds after you read other peoples views.

another reason to stay away...my friend picked up some skin problem that the doc said is usually sexually transmitted. and that she'd seen 3 other girls who tanned at the same place! Exclamation

OMG lianne, that is so disgusting! An STD from a tanning bed? Unless they are all sleeping with the cute boy behind the counter! Wink

I really liked what Allicsirp had to say. Tanning presents dangers to both your health and beauty. It *does* do a nice job of camoflaguing imperfections, but so will a nice bronzer (maybe Dr. Hauschka's bronzer??)

To begin with, to much of anything is bad for you. Using everything in moderation. With that knowledge, I will begin.
When you get your hair done, do you not feel better about yourself? When you get a new pair of clothes or clothes do you not feel good about yourself? It is unfair to single out one part of the beauty industry.
Getting a tan makes me feel good about myself. Finally, there is an article that states the sun produces Vitamin D in your body. Cutting out the sun in your life is like cutting out the carbs in your diet. Carbs are the natural fuel for the brain and body. Tanning is the bodys way of natural protection by producing melanin. This melanin protects your skin from the everyday exposure to sun. Again, using this knowledge in moderation is the key.

get real,

Even in moderation I have the wrinkles and damage to proove that tanning beds are not good for the skin!

Yes, you need vitamin D in your body and it does come from the sun..but that doesn't mean you should stick yourself into a machine unprotected. Go outside, enjoy life and wear sunscreen and you'll get all the vitamin D you need. Unless you live far north where it's dark all day long there's no need for a tanning bed to get your vitamin D! You body doesn't need much sunlight to get your vitamin D.

Also, I'd like to point out that melanin is a direct result of skin damage from the sun.

I have read plenty of materials on tanning beds and I know what the industry claims are. I also know how easily test results can be manipulated and falsified to have them say what you'd like. Take any college level statistics or research course and you'll realize that all research should be met with skepticism.

I don't know how you can compare getting a tan to getting a haircut! Can getting your hair done or buying new clothes lead to age spots, sun spots, wrinkles or cancer? Didn't think so.

I do not condone anyone for using tanning beds, it's your decision and that's fine with me.
I want to inform people of my experiences and allow them to make their own decisions from there.

I totally agree with you, lianne. Tanning cannot be compared to any other beauty regimine in making us feel better even though it's in moderation. That's like saying one cigarette is okay...when we all know it isn't. Except for mystic tanning and self-tanning, I've learned to stay away if I want to avoid serious aging, wrinkling and possible skin cancer besides the fact that I believe it is actually addicting. If I didn't go everyday during the spring and summer, I felt like I was losing my tan...I'm sure if there was a study, they may find alot of people may have an * spam alert * to it.

Allicsirp,

It was a bit of a pick me up for me too. I never tanned more than the recommended times, and I've got the damage... It's my boyfriend that got me to stop going..and I now regret that I ever went.

Instead I spend extra $$$ for GOOD products...it's become a real * spam alert * for me

In most parts of the world, there is ample opportunity to take advantage of the healthy benefits of sunlight to facilitate vitamin D production (without even really trying). I think it would be more appropriate for you to just continue enjoying your tanning rather than forging a blatant attempt to qualify it, by drawing nonsensical parallels(a haircut?? carbs???). Unless you are living in 24 hours of darkness, there probably isn't a need to use a tanning bed. Furthermore, "tanning" is hardly a "part" of the "beaty industry" more appropriately, it is a catalyst for the beaty/skincare industry to develop more advanced treatments to treat the trauma that tanning/sunning inflicts on the skin. For you to suggest, even indirectly, that tanning beds (even in moderation) are a good thing is, at best, ridiculous - and at worst, irresponsible. If you love tanning - then just enjoy it!
