| I'm looking into buying some Jane Iredale make up, but how do I know if my skin is cool or warm. I am quite pale with blue eyes and dyed brown hair (that will soon be blonde again)! |

| I recently purchased Jane Iredale loose powder foundation. I am blond/light brown, fair complexion, blue eyes, but have a very light red tone to my skin due to mild roscea. The woman I purchased from matched me with Warm Silk. This covers my imperfections quite well! |

| My guess is that this depends more on you actual skin tone than your hair and eye color. Some people have pink undertones (my guess this would be cool) and others have yellow/olive (presumably this would be warm). |

You can usually figure it out by looking at the colours you usually lean towards in your wardrobe and make-up...blue eyed blondes who either lean toward,- or look better in pink are usually cool....those who lean toward, or look better in peach, are usually warm....Fair haired, blondes with cool skin are also more prone (usually) to broken capillaries...also,the appearance of dark circles might seem a little more pronounced due to the transluscence of the skin around the eyes...with the warmer skins, less so...Hope that helps!  |

look at the insides of your arms...if they're a yellowish colour, you're warm. If they are pink or blue, you're a cool.
Skin-etc.com sells samples for the powders for $3 each.
I wear MAC NC25 and wear Warm silk in the liquid minerals (slightly darker than the pressed powder) |

You really seem to know your colour stuff.
Can you help me too?
I went to a JI shop in London a few years ago and spent about an hour trying to find a good colour match. Unfortunately the shop assistants didn't seem to know much about it and were no help at all.
I ended up with amber purepressed base. I seem to remember I went for the pressed because the colours were really limited in the loose powder, but it's a bit too matt.
I just use it to cover up some broken capilleries lately. Really it's too yellow and too pale for me. If I put it all over I look like a ghost and it matches my neck.
I think I must be a borderline something because I've almost never found a good colour match in any range. Only once and it was discontinued.
So clothes;light beige, light blue, cream all really brighten my skin (though I prefer to wear black!). I have dark blond/light brown hair with subtle reddish tones (natural). Dark blue eyes and very easy tan skin which goes dark golden (which I don't do any more, obviously).
Any help would be much, much appreciated. I can really see the potential of the mineral stuff even using the wrong colours.

Molly,
I tried amber when I did my JI sampling. I found it more yellow and lighter than the warm silk.
Since you wear beige, and tan easily you're most likely warm. Loose powder will be less matte, but the colours vary between the pressed and loose, so be sure to sample what you plan to purchase.
The site I mentioned before sells samples of both the pressed and loose. |

Hi! Hope you don't mind me butting in. I look terrible (pale, washed out) in beiges and tans and makeup with too much brown makes me look horrid, too. Does this mean that I am probably cool-toned? My skin tone is truly difficult to figure out; it appears to me to be light, but olive in tone, but I have a terrible time finding colors that work. I tend to look good in berry lippies though.

You sound cool to me....often people think they are warm when they have olive toned skin but that is not always the case.... often olive tones skins are "winters"(cool) - if you are olive toned and dark haired you probably look fab in jewel tones and rich colour...and would fall into the winter category (cool tone - look good in bold cool colours - and great in black!!!)If not, - oh well - I tried!)

I don't think it necessarily has to be a deep olive...olive tones can be subtle - as in some of, lets say, Italian descent...with really dark hair -- who look better in cool, bold gem tones than they do in traditional autumnal rusts, bricks, etc....in the end, it's probably all about just what you like and what you feel good in! Me, you couldn't pry me away from electric pink if you tried!!!  |

The subject of cool or warm skin tones has always confused me. I've read about various tests you can do to check which tone you are and I'm still clueless.
I was told to check the veins in your wrist. If they are blue - you're cool, if they're green - you're warm. Some of the veins in my wrist are blue, some are green.
I tend to wear more winter, cool colours when it comes to clothes but that is just because they appeal to me more (they don't necessarily suit me).
According to one site I was reading, the fact that I have some freckles means that I am warm. Another site said that some 'cool' people can have freckles.
I have brown hair (quite dark but with natural red streaks) and brown eyes. My skin is very fair and I burn easily but do tan once the sunburn has subsided.
I've been wanting to try BE or JI for ages but cannot figure out which shade to go for. May just go for a neutral shade and keep my fingers crossed.  |

toe you sound a little like me! The thing is when I tan I get mistaken for spanish,italian, greek
I know I'm not pinky because when people have tried that tone with me it looks really wrong.
Try this for fun, place different coloured clothes (or card) bright, pale behind your head, keep your shoulders bare and look to which colours make you look pale (bright deep purple for me), reflect light back (red for me)or just don't work OR keep a white background and place the colours over your chest and shoulders. |

Thanks for the suggestion, Eve. Will try it out later. One colour I know I can't wear is beige. Like Tinamarie8, it makes me look washed out.
Glad to hear somebody else gets mistaken for lots of other nationalities. I get the whole Spanish, Italian, Greek thing when I've got a tan. When I'm my usual pasty self, I'm mistaken for Russian or French. I had a lecturer at University who was half Russian. He insisted that I must have some Russian ancestry. I am 99% sure that I don't but he wouldn't believe me. Crazy fool! |

I had the exact same problem - green AND blue veins. Some said I was warm, some said cool. Blonde hair, blue eyes, burn easily but will tan eventually. After weeks of researching various color shades, I finally bit the bullet and went to a Spa that carried the JI line. Before I even sat down she said I was "Warm Silk" in the pressed powder and sure enough she was right. Because I have several broken capillaries I thought I was more on the warm side but the yellow pigment in this foundation covers them perfectly. She said the Warm Silk fits the widest range of skin tones.
These are (were) my shades:
- BE 1.2
- Mac NW25
- Chanel Teint Naturel Beige Soft Bisque
And I am often mistaken for being Irish (my husband's last name doesn't help with that assumption), but am actually Italian (Sicilian). Maybe the invasion of Normandy centuries ago had something to do with my fairness. 4 siblings are very, very dark and 1 is fair. |

I had my colors done about five years ago. It cost me 100.00 US dollars but worth every penny. My heritage is Italian/Irish and I have light olive skin, Chesnut brown hair, green eyes. I always thought I was a winter. After having my colors done I found out I was a Spring. Now there are several types of Springs. I turn out to be an UltraMarine Spring. I look best in off white not pure white. My colors are BRIGHT: Orange, Lime green, Bright Yellow.Always loved purple but it drains me. I can wear gray better than black. Gold accessories are better then silver on me. I forget the name of the company that did my colors. Will find info and let you know. I went to a woman who spent much time with me. My color matching was more difficult for her as I was one of those people that fell between seasons. Let me tell you it makes all the difference in the world wearing the right colors.
Do you ever notice when you wear a certain color shirt or sweater people always comment on how great you look? They are not commenting on the outfit. Before I had my colors done I had this orange tee. It seemed when I wore it everyone who say I looked great. |

OK, so in JI if you have cool yellowish skin tones, you go for one of the 'warm' bases and if you have pinky warm toned skin you go for a 'cool' base? I prefer yellow toned bases, so I would want a 'warm' JI base? (not that I am buying yet...just bought a big pot of BE )
Maybe they should make a base for grey toned skin  |

I was always confused about which colour I was until I went to a prescriptives counter during my years in high school and they classified me as yellow/orange...meaning yellow/oranges are the undertones in my skin. Knowing that has made it MUCH easier to pick foundations.

There is a UK outlet, in the Fulham road I seem to remember (London), but to be honest they're completely useless if you're looking for any advice unless they've got better staff in since. I would check first.
And it's not always helpful to go to a make-up counter either. I tried a little experiment last Christmas. I went to around 5 Elizabeth Arden counters in London and asked them to find a colour match for me in one single range. I couldn't believe the wide range of colours I ended up with and none of them were right.
I was thinking maybe that's just my skin that's such a problematic solour. I'm so glad everyone else seems to be borderline something too.
Thanks for the advice though, I guess it's just a question of sampling sampling til you find.

half the time I'm sure those counter women have no idea.
So for example if I were 1.2 Fairly light in BE, I would be a bisque in JI.
One good thing about the BE I found was that I could get away with 1, 1.2,2 colour shades. |

Thanks for your input. I always suspected that I was cool, but I have made many makeup mistakes by choosing from warm palettes. For the past few years, I have chosen from neutrals because I was tired of making mistakes. I do have dark hair and dark eyes, and my light (and I mean *light*) olive skin is almost impossible to match for foundation. Most olive-based foundations are way too dark. Luckily, minerals are very forgiving, so that is what I go with (neutral, of course!). Funny you should mention black; most of my wardrobe consists of black What colors are in there are blue-based colors of purple, pink, and navy. Everyone has always said olive=warm, but in my experience, that is not true. You have helped me confirm what I suspected

 YAY TINA! I am very happy for you!! This whole "what season am I" question too strictly categorizes people....I have a friend who is of Italian/Irish descent (dark hair, dark eyes, very fair)who insisted that she must be warm because she had a slightly yellowish tone just around her eye area..she kept wearing warm brick and leafy auburn colours - and she looked tired.....her overall skin appearance was DRAB...but the slight yellowing around the eye area was sure accentuated!!!  Her very fair skin looked awful! What a difference when I finally got her to try cooler, bolder emerald tones!
