I'm going to try the CE Ferulic recipe at Lotioncrafters, and am watching my pennies.
Phenonip is one of the ingredients, but can I live without it?
It seems to only be in there as a preservative, and since there is already Vitamin E in the recipe *and* I'm not making huge batches of this so it won't need a long shelf life.
It's expensive, and I had a bit of sticker shock with the shipping, so I'm trying to cut corners where I can. |

Vitamin E cannot be a replacement of a preservative... |

I thought Vitamin E was a preservative? |

The only all natural alternative I can recommend off the top of my head is GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) a few drops, it won't alter the ph. It is only effective for short term preservation. Check online and local health food stores, it is slightly pricey but cheaper than the phenonip. |

Thanks for your help and suggestions. I just went ahead and winced and stuck the phenonip in the cart. It's the priciest thing I had to order and it's not even an active, lol!
I think I was remembering that the E added stability and that was translating to "preservative" in my head. So it goes.
Maybe when I've had some DIY success I'll be more comfortable substituting things. I tried another C serum recipe but wasn't happy with the result (too runny for me). This one spells out using a specific hyaluronic acid (citing that the other can be thin) so hopefully if I follow it exactly it'll be thicker than the other one. I don't think there was anything wrong with the other recipe, it's just a YMMV thing. |

I know what you mean, I wince at the prices of many of the DIY supplies, the good side is you will have a lot to use for many potions!
Good luck and let us know how your new C serum works out. |

Kit with the ingredients required to make a few batches of CE ferulic for $25. You just need to supply water, vodka and your scales!

Store is run by one of the regulars on Skincaretalk and is used by many there and here so is reputable. |
