Hello helloooo, I'm new here, but I have a BUNCH of questions, but it's kinda hard to navigate the forum.
I JUST got my hair straightened a la Japanese hair straightening treatment.
Now I want to keep my hair as healthy as possible since I know this is a damaging treatment.
My stylist gave me a hot oil treatment that she makes and here's a list of the ingredients:
100% Wildcrafted: Avocado oil, jojoba oil, camellia (green tea) oil, moroccan argan oil, aloe vera oil, grapeseed oil, vitamin E.
100% Pure Essential Oils: French lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, geranium oil, rosemary verbenon oil, chamomile oil, cypress oil, rosemary oil, lemongrass oil, lemon oil, orange oil.
She told me to use a SLS free shampoo and conditioner and based on this forum, I'm using Trader Joes' Nourish Spa shampoo and conditioner. I added jojoba oil (also based on snooping around in this forum, lol). I bought apple cider vinegar for those acv rinses.
Can anyone recommend a hair care regimen? And a styling product for when I use hot rollers on my hair? Or my curling iron for the ends of my hair?
For reference, I have medium length hair, it's like two inches past my shoulders and I've color glazed it regularly. Prior to switching to the TJ shampoo/conditioner, I've been using Redken's Real Control Shampoo/Conditioner and Kiehl's leave in conditioner. When I would straighten my hair, I used a bit of Redken's Smooth Down heat glide serum. When I would leave it curly, I used Redken's Fresh Curl cream and some mousse (usually Pantene Pro-V's lol)
I've heard about using coconut oil as a conditioning treatment, but is it really effective? ...Yeah, I got a lot of questions, lol. Help meeeee!! |

I use coconut oil as leave-in conditioner after towel dry my hair, and it helps to keep hair smooth. But I still prefer hair masks from brands like Terax or Kerastase. |

Have you been advised to avoid products containing salt (sodium chloride) too? It would be worth checking the pH of your Trader Joe's against the pH recommended to be used with the straightening treatment, because many are affected by alkaline products.
Coconut oil is amazing because the lauric acid is a small enough molecule to be absorbed into the hair shaft. However that will likely be ineffective because you have the keratin treatment coating the surface. You may have the same problem with other plant oils. The lipids naturally found on the surface of the hair are primarily 18-MEA, with lesser amounts of palmitic, stearic and oleic acids. These (esp. 18-MEA) are depleted with heat styling, chemical treatments and general wear and tear (washing, brushing). 18-MEA is not found in any plant oil so you are best trying to track down a lanolin derivative or commercial product containing useful amounts. Palm fruit oil is a good source of palmitic with less oleic, and West African shea butter is a good source of stearic with less oleic. Some lanolin derivatives contain useful amounts of all three fatty acids.
TBH I think you would get better results trying to avoid damage in the first place rather than attempting to 'protect' or 'repair' that damage. Have you considered styling methods that do not employ heat? Are you already using a wide tooth comb only when hair is wet, using a silk or satin pillowcase? Are you using any method to protect your hair from UV damage? Good article on applying high temperatures to hair http://www.hairfree.bz/Article.pdf |

Firefoxe or anyone...
What would be your opinion of the best way to "clarify" hair coated with silicones or other treatments?
baking soda? special type of shampoo? etc.?
Tks, BFG |

Any good clarifying shampoo, an ACV rinse would work as well. |

and we recommend Milbon WillowLuxe (you can get it on Amazon). It's expensive, but worth it, and it's made by the people who make the Liscio Japanese straightening system. Yuko products are also good , but Milbon is a bit better. We also use Wen on occasion. |

I use coconut oil, almond oil w/ peppermint and sometimes amla oil. I don't use conditioner very much only after a henna treatment (for added highlights) on my hair for added shines usually every 2-3 weeks...
And I don't have split ends and my hair is not dry/dull... Other than this, I don't do anything else.... The more chemicals you use, the more it will damage your hair. Keep it simple and easy.
Good luck
