Hi everyone, I'm completely new to this but I was looking for some advice after just starting on the Obagi Nu Derm system. It has been 2.5 weeks and I have had the usual dryness and redness, very much so. This I do not mind, and the peeling has definately reduced this week. However, the product seems to have not faded my pigmentation at all. Infact, this week I have been really worried because I think it might be making it darker! On my neck a certain spot seems to have got dark, but its difficult to tell whether this is not just the redness and irrittion making it more prominent. I am really worried that it wont go away, and that other dark areas may emerge or my current pigmentation gets darker. I am consdering to stop using the products (Cleanser, toner, clear, exfoderm, blender, retin-A, sunfader). Please give me some advice, are these side effects normal, or permanent? Has anyone else had their pigmentation get darker in response to these products? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks |

Have you been using the sunscreen? Freshly peeling skin is very susceptable to darkening from the sun, even when you feel you're not in it that much. Also be careful not to pick the flaking skin. If this doesn't help I would discontinue the product. |

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have not been using sunblock, because I haven't been able to leave the house at all for the past couple of weeks, so I have not been in any contact with the sun, which is why I find this strange. I figured if I wasn't going to be outside at all, why use sunblock? The sunfader I have been using also contains a small amount of sunblock, certainly enough for indoors! I have just read somewhere about pigmentation getting darker before it gets lighter, but should this be happening as I approach 3.5 weeks (not 2.5 as stated before, pardon the mistype)? |

Hello! I do not think you have anything to worry about. I think that your problems are due to the bringing phases of retin a. Also, maybe your pigmentation issues are due to you not getting any sun lately? Maybe your skin has lightened from being inside and now the pigmentation looks darker in comparison. It is hard to say, but it has only been 2.5 weeks, and retin a takes much longer to work, especially on pigmentation issues. Be very careful, as the actives are very strong and make you sensitive to light. If you could share your routine it may be helpful ( strength or RA, how often you apply, etc) |

Hi guys thanks for getting back to me! After reading through some of those posts it seems the time in which results appear differs quite dramatically, with some seeing differences in week 3, others in week 9. Whilst I would rather results sooner rather than later, I am willing to wait, I just have this worry that the system may be making my skin permanently worse. I am applying 0.05 retin A, mixed with 1/2 gram of blender every night. Also with this, probably 1/2 - 3/4 gram of clear (this is after washing with cleanser and applying toner). In the morning I again use the cleanser and toner, the same amout of clear, then 1/2 gram of exforderm and 1/2 - 3/4 gram of sunfader (which really stings!). I think maybe the darker areas are distracting me from some positives, as yesterday I could see that around my cheeks, eyes and forehead, pigmentation has faded a little. It's just my neck area where pigmentation is getting darker. I have started to avoid these areas now with the product, but I don't know whether this is a good idea. Maybe the system is just bringing these spots to the surface, effectively "lifting them out"... or maybe not. I just don't know!! |

When I first started Obagi skin care kit approx. 8years ago, I was feeling the same as what you are feeling (I was horrified!) because my skin at that time became so wrinkly, you would not believe! But this is only the start. What it is doing is making underneath the skin "healthier" so all the bad skin is coming out to the surface of your skin... don't be despair, as it takes time approx. 3 months to see good results.... But please be patient.
ALSO, DON'T FORGET TO USE SUNSCREEN OF AT LEAST 30 SPF, WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT IN CONJUNCTION WITH OBAGI SKIN TREATMENT.
Good luck!
