I cannot use serums or concoctions that are made with glycerin or oils of any kind. Glycerin, jojoba, olive, avocado, grapeseed, castor...Every kind of oil I have tried makes me break out. I love the idea of making my own facial products but, based on the recipes I am seeing here and other places, it doesn't seem do-able without including oils. Is there anyone here who has created an oil free vitamin c serum or any product of any kind that is oil free?
TIA! |

First of all, I'm going to say "That really sucks. I'm sorry."
Have you tried cones or petroleum jelly? All of the oils you mentioned were natural, so I don't know if you lean toward that or not. I would give them a try, but if you're one of those people who is very set on only using natural ingredients, the only thing I could suggest is maybe trying allantoin for occlusion/protection. It's a water soluble powder that can be classified as skin protectant, and is known to promote healing. It's also an anti-irritant, and we can never get enough of those imo. I think it can only be used in a roughly neutral solution, but I'll have to double check that later when I'm more awake.
What have you tried previously? I imagine lecithin would be a good alternative too, but it might break you out like the carrier oils. And (this is completely anecdotal) but I remember a nice guy on another forum mentioning that every oil he tried caused acne, but somehow flax seed oil did not. It's lower in comedogenic fatty acids than other oils, but there's still a good dollop of them in there. It may be worth a shot if you're feeling brave. hth. |

Have you looked in the DIY section? The simplest C serum is just C and water. Oils are sometimes added because the C can be very drying.
I don't know which products you use now that don't cause you to break out. I would advise you to look up the ingredients and use that to make a list of things your skin can handle, and find or create recipes with those ingredients. |

As said by Lotusesther the simplest C serum is just C and water.
On the other hand you can make DIY without oils using the gelatin produced by boiling linseed... The gel is used for hair as I can see on the google search, but there is a Spanish Youtube user that uses it as a basis for skin use...

Thanks, everyone.
So, if a serum calls for 1 tsp of x oil, would I replace that with gelatin?! |

I think I should start at the beginning:
Is there something specific that you expect the oil in the recipe to do, or are you just looking for a replacement because so many DIY recipes have oil as a component? |

You should really use a scale and pH strips if you plan on adapting the recipe. The tsp are not 100% accurate as is because these things are meant to be weighed and if your pH rises above 3.5 it won't be very effective. |
