Have you all ever heard of tocotrienols?

It's a form of vitamin E that, like tocopherols, has 4 forms: alpha tocotrienol, beta tocotrienol, delta tocotrienol, and gamma tocotrienol. It's much less common than tocopherol.

I stumbled upon a thread on another forum where people where saying that taking tocotrienols can help with hair loss. They started taking it because of a study that linked tocotrienol to hair health.

See this thread: http://www.baldtruthtalk.com/showthread.php?t=7125

Allegedly, tocotrienols are stronger antioxidants than tocopherols.

There's another group of vitamin E called tocomonoenols, but there's very little research on tocomonenols so far.

The study that you have mentioned - a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled hair loss clinical trial - is a human study that showed positive effect by tocotrienols.

Tocotrienol is naturally attainable through foodstuffs (barley, rice, oat, wheat, barley, and mostly from palm fruit oil) hence all humans have taken it at one time or another. Tocotrienol has a long history of use in food and beverages in the US, even more so in the Asia region since palm fruit oil is a staple cooking oil. Tocotrienol has been shown in human clinical studies to be safe for human consumption with no adverse effects.

The main difference between this tocotrienol supplement (containing Tocomin SupraBio®, Carotech Inc.) and other tocotrienol products lies in the tocotrienol delivery formulation (SupraBio™ system), which is a patented self-emulsifying formulation that guarantees increased absorption of individual tocotrienol isomers by up to 300% via the oral route and independent of food intake.

Briefly, the study reported that 40% volunteers in the tocotrienol supplementation group had greater than 50% hair growth; 5% had 20% - 50% increase; 45% had 10% - 25% increase; while 5% had less than 10%. Only 1 volunteer (5.0%) had a slight decrease in the number of hairs. On average, after 8 months of supplementation, volunteers in the tocotrienol group showed 34% increase in hair growth compared to baseline.

However, in the placebo group (soybean oil capsules), 6.7% of volunteers had more than 20% increase hair growth; 46.7% had negligible increase; whereas 46.7% had a decrease in the number of hairs.

Facts about tocotrienols (Tocomin® and Tocomin SupraBio®)
1. Tocotrienol is more potent in antioxidant function than alpha-tocopherol (conventional vitamin E).

2. Tocotrienol is rare in nature, it is practically impossible to get the biologically active concentration of tocotrienols from diet alone, for example, one has to take a cup of palm oil per day to achieve this. Therefore, supplementing tocotrienols is necessary to achieve beneficial levels in the body.

3. Like all fat-soluble vitamins, tocotrienols are poorly absorbed when taken empty stomach or with a fat poor diet. The oral absorption of tocotrienols is low and erratic. Its absorption efficiency also depends on the type and amount of dietary fats present. The patented SupraBio® self-emulsifying system ensures a rapid and consistent absorption of tocotrienols independent of dietary fat or food intake.

Taken together, it is suggested that due to tocotrienols’ potent antioxidant activity, increase uptake of tocotrienols helps “reduce lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in the scalp, which are known to be associated with alopecia / hair loss”.

Tocomin SupraBio soft gel capsules can be purchased from the following :-
i) HEALTHY ORIGINS - Tocomin SupraBio 50mg (Tocotrienol Complex) 150 softgels - call 1-888-228-6650

ii) LIFE EXTENSION FOUNDATION - Super Absorbale Tocotrienol call 1 800 544 4440

iii) VITACOST's TOCOMIN SUPRABIO - Tel : 1 800 381 0759.

iv) TOCO-SORB by Jarrow Formulas - call this no : (310) 204-6936

v) CAROTEC's Tocomin SupraBio - call this company at 1-800-522-4279

The above are only some examples of a number of companies that carry Tocomin SupraBio. There are other products in the market with a combination of tocotrienol (Tocomin) with other ingredients / phytonutrients. What is most important is that when you purchase the product - ensure that it carries the logo and tradename - Tocomin or Tocomin Suprabio on the product label.

This would ensure that you are getting the right product with ingredients that are with proven science.

I would also like to invite you and your readers to visit the leading educational website for tocotrienol :www. tocotrienol. org. This website is dedicated to the dissemination of information about tocotrienol to the general public/consumers. It is not technical though.

Carotech, I'm not sure why that particular brand would be more effective than the brand I posted.

I think that this vitamin E complex looks pretty promising: http://www.innateresponse.com/product-p/40075.htm

Thanks Veronica M. You've really been looking into this haven't you? there's one vegetarian version in the link you supplied. I admit I haven't checked through all the multi vits as 99.9% of the time they contain iodine which I also can't take.
It would be nice to have some more info on this from someone who knows more about it. I don't know about you but I'd like to know if the ratio used in this suprabio stuff is the important thing or if it's just getting all the various bits and pieces. They all seem to vary so much even when they are supposedly made from the same source. I found a powder called Toco 8 (Link follows in case you're interested)
http://www.primordialperformance.com/store/tocotrienols_vitamine_toco8.html
being from the UK I don't know any of these companies and how reliable their products are, but I haven't found any UK companies that do it.

pineapple,

Innate Response makes a multivitamin without Iodine. Here's the link:

http://www.innateresponse.com/product-p/40078.htm

You can also cook with palm and rice bran oil. These oils are high in tocotrienols. Wheat germ oil also has tocotrienols but not as much as rice bran or palm oil.

Also, brown rice is a good source.

Thank you! that multi sounds very good. I'd spent ages trawling the internet trying to find a food state without iodine.

pineapple,

What's a food state?

Also, may I ask you can't take iodine?

Finally, one thing that I like about this multivitamin is that it's a whole food multivitamin; I also like that it contains probiotics, enzymes, and anti-aging antioxidants (like coenzyme Q10 and lipoic acid).

As far as I know food state and whole food are different names for the same thing. It just means it's not from isolated sources like usual vitamins. the multi you like uses saccharomyces cerevisiae which is a yeast. It's supposed to mean that the vitamins etc are better recognised and used by our bodies than the "usual" versions of supplements because they are more natural and, if I remember correctly, also sort of predigested.
I've been unable to use iodine since the hopital caused me to have hyperthyroidism. One of those "never been right since" scenarios that's been a real nuisance.

pineapple, some of the nutrients in the vitamin, such as vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E, come directly from food. They respectively come from carrots, oranges, and brown rice.

VeronicaM, the products listed above are some examples which contain the ingredient used in the human study that showed improved hair growth. If you find other products formulated with these names - Tocomin or Tocomin SupraBio, then they are the ones having the ingredient.

Pineapple, Toco8 is a Tocomin product in powder form, to be added into drinks or juices, not softgel. It is recommended that you confirm with primordial that it meets your requirement.

Hi cm5597

The study "Effects of Tocotrienol Supplementation on Hair Growth in Human Volunteers" is available at Tropical Life Sciences Research, 21(2), 91-99, 2010.

You can search for the article by either pasting the study title or journal reference.

Thank you.
