This homemade recipe is amazing and especially good now that winter is coming :)
Ingredients:
2 oz. of beeswax
3/4 cups of sweet almond oil
1/4 cup of avocado oil
Double boiler
Blender
4 400 IU Vitamin E capsules
Essential oil of your choosing (lavender, lemongrass and orange are all great options...)
Small jars with tight fitting lids
Combine your beeswax, almond oil and avocado oil in the top of a double boiler, heating them just until the wax melts and being careful not to overheat and destroy the healing properties of the oils.
Put one cup of warm water into your blender, placing the lid on without the centerpiece in. Turn it on low.
Pour the warm wax and oil mixture slowly into the blender as it mixes. Also, squeeze the oil from four vitamin E capsules into the mix.
Add 10 drops of essential oil to your hand cream while the blender is still running. Allow the blender to churn until the hand cream has cooled and thickened into an even cream.
Turn off the blender and carefully spoon your finished avocado hand cream into small glass jars with tight fitting lids. Allow the cream to cool completely before sealing. Store your natural hand cream in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator. |

Thanks Tindra1816! Wow, it really soothes my dry, flaky skin - I'll have to make up several batches now that winter seems to have arrived (snow on the ground in Calgary - hope it won't last!). Thanks again! Bess |

Wow, this looks like it would be a very emollient cream. |

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but that recipe contains no preservatives, and it has water in it. You'll be smearing bacteria and mold over your skin along with the oils and essential oils.
I would leave out the water, then add water to it as I use it, or just use it in the shower. |

Immacolata - Would the Vitamin E act as a preservative at all? I use so much of the product so quickly (it's very dry and windy here) that I don't think it would have the time to get moldy (could be wrong, though!). |

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, not a preservative.
Do you keep it in the refrigerator? I still wouldn't do it, but if you use it up within a week or so, and keep it in the fridge, you should be okay.
It's a pity, but there really is no such thing as an EFFECTIVE, all-natural preservative. |

The vitamin E will keep the oils from going rancid. This cream does not need a further preservative since there is no water in it. Creams and lotions that contain water can go mouldy but oil/wax creams without any water in it don't. The only problem you may encounter is the oils going rancid, and vitamin E protects against that.
It's a lovely recipe!
ETA I use a preservative for my creams that is used mostly in (organic) food products. Brand name is Heliozimt. After some trial and error I decided that I won't put anything on my skin that I would not put in my mouth. Heliozimt stints the growth of bacteria. INCI: 3,4 Methylendioxybenzaldehyd,Phenylpropylalcohol. |

She starts out with a cup of warm water in the blender - that will go bad without a preservative. If she left the water out, then no, there would not be a problem. |
