I have almost waist-length, very thick blonde hair that has totally gone awry, because of dying it brown and then back to blonde (which is my natural color) and then the onset of hypothyroidism 5 yrs ago, which has changed my skin, body, and hair completely!!!
My HG of hair care has always been Biolage Conditioning Balm, but it's just not as effective anymore.
I have been trying everything and it's brother's, uncle's, cousin's products...but to no avail. My poor hair is suffering breakage and looks fried when it was always super healthy and I refuse to cut it all off. I get regular trims and only wash it every 2-3 days, as to not strip it's natural oils.
Here's a list of just a few that I've tried, so if anyone has anything else (natural or store bought, topical or oral)...please let me know!!!
Simply Organic, Phyto 9, Ojon, Biolage, Matrix, Redken, Biosilk, Terax, Paul Mitchell, Aveda, Split-Ender, MOP, chlorine shower head filter (majorally wasted water!!!).
Thank you!!!

I have quite a collection of hair products and do have several of the ones you listed.
I recently purchased from Sally's beauty supply a heat cap. It is called Hot n Gold and was about $23.00. You plug it in and you get moist heat. It really makes your deep conditioner work better with heat.
Some other good products from Sally's are generic K-pak (just as good as the regular); L'oreal nature therapy.
I also use a shower cap when doing any conditoner. I shampoo hair, towel excess then apply conditioner and then a cheapie shower cap. It helps keep the heat from your scalp in also.

I have fine blonde hair. I have used any and every product that said "for thin, brittle, breakage, split end repair" you name it, I tried it.
For the past three weeks I have used Frederic Fekkai's protein Rx (I think it is called) shampoo and conditioner. I have never had wonderful hair and now I never seem to want to wear it in a ponytail. After the first use it was shiny, very manageable, it actually stayed put however I styled it. I am sold!!!
ALSO -- A dime sized dollop of each product two to three times a week is all I have used. In the end, I believe I will save $$ as I am using so much less product and I KNOW I will use this one to the bottom of the bottle as opposed to getting frustrated and pitching it after half a bottle. |

Hi Susan, you sound just like me! I also have hypothyroidism, I take meds to help but my hair still seems to suffer! Last summer I got some highlights and my hair has been fried ever since! I am surprised I have any hair left the way I've been losing it lately. I remember when my hair was like this before I used Infusium 23 leave in treatment and I could actually comb my hair when it was wet without breakage! You can buy it at any retail outlet, I am going to go get some and try it out again because like you I have tried everything else and my hair is still frizzy! So maybe give that a try and see if it works for you! Donna |

Thanks for the suggestions ladies!!! I definitely have heard that a shower cap and heat are a must with weekly conditioning treaments...even a cheap cap wrapped in a towel fresh from the dryer has been recommended.
Donna: I lost at least 1/3 of my hair when I was first diagnosed with hypo about 5 yrs ago, but after being prescribed the Synthroid it's not so bad. Thank goodness I have hair like a horse...super thick and lots of it, so it wasn't as noticeable to other people until I put it in a ponytail (my Dad has hair like Phil Donahue). My biggest prob has been dryness...EVERYWHERE!!! My skin is like and alligator's and my hair is so brittle it's breaking all over and since it's almost to my waist, it's really noticeable and looks just plain awful!!! I use to have hair as soft and silky as an Asian's hair (which is kinda odd for a natural blonde), but now it's horrid!!! I'm very attached to it and don't want to cut it off. I did some research and found 3 products that a lot of people with similar hair problems had great results with. They can be pricey, but check out eBay and you'll find much better prices. Here they are:
1.) Nexxus Emergencee Strengthening Polymeric Reconstructor
2.) Aphogee Treatment for Damaged Hair
3.) Kerastase Aqua Oleum
I've ordered the the Nexxus and the Aphogee and am goin to purchase the Kerastase soon. They are all meant for weekly treatments and it has been recommended to alternate each week with a non-protein treatment such as the Nexxus, which is a pH treatment and not a protein treatment that just fills in hair. I will definitely let you guys know how it goes and I'll post a link from eBay to any of these I find that are resonably priced (I think one of them may have multiple items to sell).
Thanks again for your help!!!

Susan -
Before you splurge on the Keratese Aqua Oleum product you mentioned (man, have you SEEN the prices for Keratese products?? ), you might want to try a cheaper alternative. I haven't checked the ingredients myself, but I've been told that the products are nearly identical since they're made by the same company (L'oreal).
I'm talking about L'oreal Natures Therapy Mega Moisture Mask/Conditioner, and you can get it at your local Sallys Beauty Supply store. I've been using it religiously and my hair looks fantastic. You can get a giant tub of it at Sallys for like $11US, and they even sell little sample packets of it for $0.99US (depending on hair length, there's enough product in the sample packets for 2-5 uses) so you can try it out before commiting yourself to the larger tub of it. It has a fresh, apple-y smell. I also adore the matching L'oreal Natures Therapy Mega Moisture (creme) shampoo....
As I said, L'oreal makes both Keratese ("prestige" products) and the Natures Therapy and since the ingredients are very similar, personally I prefer to pay the lesser price! Although there is one Keratese product that I'm going to invest in one of these days, though I can't recall the name of it off the top of my head....
Just apply a tiny amount of the NT Mega Moisture Mask/Cond after shampooing and towel-drying, then put on your "moist heat" cap (or cheapie shower cap, then wrap it with a freshly heated towel from the dryer) and leave it on for 15-60 minutes (the longer, the better!). Do this 1 per week until your hair gets back into good condition, then cut back 2 x per month.
HTH,
Carrie
P.S. Have you ever tried applying straight extra virgin olive oil to your hair as a deep condition? Mix a couple tablespoons of olive oil (you might need as much as a 1/4 cup, since your hair is so long) with an equal amount of honey and work it through your hair. Put on your "moist heat" cap or the shower cap/heated towel trick and leave it on for at least 60 minutes (over night is even better!) then wash the mixture out of your hair with a gentle shampoo (I recommend that NT Mega Moisture creme shampoo!).... |

I really agree with carekate that a trip to Sally's is worthwhile!
Please try the nature therapy first before investing in the Keratese. Sally's has sample packets of a lot of products starting at .99 cents.
The nature therapy is a great line. I have not tried the Keratese but have tried the others you mentioned.
The Nexxus emergencee was wonderful years ago when I had a perm and highlights. The salon treatment was shampoo, apply emergencee (leave on for at least 10 minutes with heat) rinse. Then apply a moisturizing condtioner; leave on then rinse.
Sally's also has the aphogee in sample and regular sizes.
Also seewww.makeupalley.com for product reviews of these products.

Thanks for the info on the Apoghee products -- I had no idea they were available at Sallys! I was checking them out on Sallys website and it would appear that Apoghee is a hair product line that is targeted for African-Americans, is that right? Not that it would stop from trying them out, but I was just wondering. Also, on the "Usage Tips" for the Apoghee Treatment for Damaged Hair, it said "CAUTION: Please read and follow instructions on back label carefully!" I've never seen a warning lable like that on a hair treatment -- this must be heavy duty stuff! Can't wait to try it and since I've been meaning to get to Sallys anyway to pick up a bottle of my hair dye (I use Wella Color Charm permanent hair colors to obtain my "base" hair color than go to my stylist for my fancy carmelized highlights) so I'll be sure to pick some up. I think I also want to try the Apoghee Gloss Therapy, as it looks like it might be a good alternative to Biosilk's Silk Therapy (which is like 70% alcohol so it's super drying, although you don't realize it until it's almost too late!!)....
Susan -
I'd like to also suggest you try to tackle your hair-care woes from the inside. Have you tried taking any nutritional supplements like Silica or MSM? Check out these threads for more info: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=3742 and http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=1298. Obviously, these supplements won't cure your already damaged hair (only chopping it all off and growing it back out again would do that, but I know you don't want to go there!), but it will help you grow out your hair more quickly so you can slowly trim off the damaged parts bit by bit. Does that make any sense? Don't worry -- I'm not suggesting you cut off your 'crowning glory'!! It's just something else to think about -- another weapon to add to your arsenal to get your hair back into beautiful condition....

Hi,
I know youv'e tried the MOP range before but did you try their C-System, its for damaged and dyed hair, which seems just right for you. My hair was coming out by the handful and I switched from Aveda to the MOP C-System and the breakage stopped and my hair is growing back. They also have a glisten range which will increase the shine to dyed hair.
Hope my info helped. |

Chimera: I happened to be at the health food store yesterday and picked up two of the Aubrey products you recommended: Rosa Mosqueta Nourishing Shampoo and Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner. The shampoo was O.K. and smelled nice, but the conditioner was fabulous!!! After using it today, my hair was very soft and smelled wonderful and I will continue to incorporate it into my hair care regime. Thanks so much for the recommendation!!!
Carekate: I will definitely check out Sally's this weekend for the L'oreal Natures Therapy Mega Moisture Mask/Conditioner, as I've heard many wonderful things about it. Thank you very much for the suggestion!!! Also, I will be trying the Aphogee Treatment for the first time next weekend (Nexxus this weekend) and I'll let you know the results.
Autumn: Thanks for the Emergencee advice...I will definitely use a deep conditioning mask afterwards (most likely the L'Oreal if I can get a hold of it) and I'll let you know how it works!!!
Dabawenya62: you can get the MOP products at Walgreens and most other drug stores. I've used the Glisten line which is nice, but I haven't tried the C-system yet as Happy recommeded (thanks!)...be sure to let me know your results. |

I am new to the forum and a hair and beauty product junkie, so love reading everyone's postings. I have tried so many products over the years, but do find that I end up coming back to the same products - 'cause they work! My fav 2 deep hair conditioners are:-
Bumble and Bumble Deeep Conditioner (Yes, the Deeep is the way they spell it.) It's great to put on and leave under a towel for a while while you are pottering around the house, smells light and fresh.
Philip Kingsley Elasticiser is the best one I have ever tried. For a change, you actually put this one on wet hair before you wash it, leave it on under a towel/shower cap, then wash and condition as usual and hey presto, you get lovely results with soft 'elasticised' hair which is not weighed down but just feels healthier. |

I REALLY like the products from Kerastase for damaged hair!! That's the green series which is called Resistance. The hair bath and ciment anti-usure are unbeatable when it comes to rebuilding damaged hair. I love them! Smell great too!
My hair has been through a lot of beating; it's been dyed black, bleached, taken a lot of blowdrying, flat iron, and now I'm dyeing it black every 4 weeks. |

I have fine (though thick), dry hair. I am a natural blonde, but as I've matured, it's gradually become more of a mousey, medium-blonde. I have been highlighting my hair for about ten years, and prefer the white-blonde look. At one point, my hair was so damaged, that it was starting to snap-off (near my face), and my stylist refused to do anymore highlights for me. I had to use the Redken C.A.T. treatment, mixed with All-Soft Conditioner. It really helped, but I'm not sure if Redken still has this (spray-on) treatment.
Nevertheless, I only highlight my hair occasionally now, and the last time I saw my stylist, we put low-lights in. I don't really blow-dry or flat iron my hair anymore; less fussy.
However, I have found a new shampoo & conditioner that I LOVE: Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner from Pureology! The conditioner is my favorite, as it contains a tonne of essential oils: rosemary, peppermint, rose. The aromatherapy not only makes my scalp tingle, but it also is a good pick me up in the morning. |

Like everyone else I too have gone through the gammit (is that how you spell it ? its getting late.. ) of hair care products.
I dye/bleach my hair ALL the time & have been using various "salon stocked only" products for YEARS.
My hair & skin tends to be kinda picky though ie. a product will be absolutely brilliant for a while, then my hair will just decide "sorry, I don't like this one anymore.." & then the search begins again for a replacement.
More recently I was using Goldwell, then PPS. Now after using a "highlight enhancing" duo I have turned to Kerastase. I have been using it now for about 3 weeks & felt a change in my hair after the first wash. I also use a serum of the same brand before drying/straightening/curling. No problems so far. I actually don't have to use hairspray now and yet it is not limp either. |

Just out of interest.. Did anyone else try the Garnier Fructis line when it came out
Sorry to any that may have & actually liked it, but.. it was so FANTASTIC (not!) that I used it to wash the dogs, literally
I know it is a supermarket line & its pretty cheap, but we all live in hope.. |
