My skin is dry-normal, congested and i have really large pores around my cheek area. My skin care regime is as follows:

Clarisonic
Cellcosmet gentle cream cleanser
vit-C serum
moisturizer/spf

night:
retin-a 3xweek

Oil cleansing method

What are some good products to help with my pores?

I used to have very large pores on my nose and beside my nose. And while nothing has ever completely removed them, and there really isn't any way to do it, I have found some products that have helped with reducing their appearance.

I currently use Paula's choice BHA, Retin-A/Paula's choice Retinol serum, and Paula's Choice shine stopper. For the BHA, I had to stay consistent with its use for at least 5-6 months before I saw any significant improvement in the appearance of my pores. But once they showed improvement, it was quite the dramatic change. Retin-A also helped as well by normalizing the shape of the pore, but this was very drying for me, even at 0.025%, so I switched to the PC Retinol serum which appears to be much gentler, but still just as effective. It is able to maintain the results I got from using Retin-A, and I'm sure it will show even more improvement later on as I've only been using the serum for 1-2 weeks. And lastly, the shine stopper is a bit of a cosmetic add-on. It doesn't actively do anything to reduce the size of pores over time, but it does help conceal it by absorbing the oil that comes out of the pores. Sometimes, I think that oily skin can accentuate the pores since it's a hole that glistens pretty much. The shine stopper has helped tremendously with getting rid of this shine, which also helps with pore appearance.

I hope this didn't sound like a sponsored message for Paula's choice, but it really isn't. Her products are extraordinary and I am only willing to say that after being such a long-time customer.

Have you tried Jan Marini's bioglycolic bioclear lotion? That has really made my pores smaller around my nose/chin particularly.

^ no i haven't used Jan Marini.... is that product specially meant to make pores smaller? I do have dry skin so do you think this product is okay for drier skin types? Would I put this on in the morning after cleansing? Or at night?

Thanks

Pai's Geranium & Thistle Combination Moisturizer is fantastic at minimizing pores and providing a matte (but moisturized) complexion. It is beautiful.

Maybe heat makes them appear larger and the cold smaller? I'm clearly no scientist Embarassed

BUT! If anyone does have trouble with large pores that they dislike, I recommend Mally Evercolour Poreless Face Defender from QVC. It takes place of your face powder and is incredible stuff. Its pretty pricey but it lasts such a long time. It makes your skin feel like velvet. I wish I could use it but I cant put anything on my skin because of spots. Sad

I just thought i'd quote a post I have just posted in the "behaviour of pores" topic. I think it may be helpful. Mally Beauty does quite a few products specifically aimed at making your skin appear poreless.

I do know that weather is not the cause of large or small pores. I live in Canada and it's cold for most times of the year. My skin isn't oily either which can be associated with larger pores.

It's been about 4 weeks now of using Jan Marini Bioglycolic Bioclear and I haven't seen any improvement on my pore size. I have noticed a slight improvement about my blackheads though...i will continue using....

Here's another vote for Paula's Choice. I use the 2% BHA liquid, the Shine Stopper and an anti-acne cleanser -- all from PC. I don't find them drying, and I think they help my skin look its best. Morever, PC is much less expensive than JM. Wink

BC girl,

For pores, niacinamide over 8-12 weeks is quite helpful at regulating that. I had an oily T Zone with large pores over the nose and cheeks, but not anymore. It also is very helpful against acne.

Two places you can get a decent serum with sufficient concentration of the active components to get the job done.

Here
and
Here

The first formula is much nicer for dry skin.

Enlarged pores can also be a sign of dehydration. When the weather is colder the amount of water the air tends to be drier plus there is heating to contend with. Given you report skin on the dry side it is possible you have a slightly damaged skin barrier, perhaps due to the Clarisonic/ Retin-A/ vitamin C.

Try Cellcosmet Concentrated Day cream. The sales person at the counter said it can reduce pore size. I did not believe it before but it works.

BCGirl,

Have you ever used anything with 2% salicylic acid? If so, did that help?

Try dry skin brushing it really works for open pores.

I have been doing it for two weeks now and what a difference. I dry brush in the morning straight out of bed ( I am doing my body and chest as well )I don't cleanse in the morning just brush and then straight on with moisture I use prevage. Then cleanse with make up remover at night.
But my face what a difference my skin looks amazing even if I say so my self. I have had so many complements.
My daughter is also doing it she is 17 but has always suffered with congestion and open pores hers have virtually disappeared.

woodywoodside,

Could it also be a swelling/inflammtory response that is making your pores look smaller?

no honestly my skin looks amazing. no redness, no soreness nothing. it just looks dewy and perfect. you just literally brush off the dry skin. I use a small tooth brush around my eyes and my nose. I always had quite broken capillaries around my nose and they have gone about 70%. I am in the beauty industry (not an esthetician) but one thing I do know is that over cleansing and stripping makes your skin dry and dry skin produces more oil form larger pores. I have never over stripped my skin and I will be very honest and say that I had only patches of open pores long the sides of my nose. But my daughter had lots all over her cheeks. They have all but cleared up as have mine.
I went to the dollar store and paid $3.00 for a natural bristle brush, it didn't cost me much to try. So not much waisted if it doesn't work for y

I had very large pores on my nose running down to my cheeks due to my very oily skin too. I found that washing with warm water then a splash of cold afterwards did the trick, but it was a bit drying.

I have open pores and I must say I've tried most things all those products which promise to make them smaller in my experience I find when they look quite large and have an almost dragging look on them it could be dehydration or congestion of putting to many creams etc on
What is lovely is
Clean your skin then clean again with elemis tri enzyme facial cleanser with a clarisonic
Followed by decleor neroli,do this for a good few nights
To many creams serums oil control items make them worse
I find thick creams make my skin look shiny which makes my pores look worse
Sometimes I squeeze out my pores

Hi BCgirl Smile I don't see any bad things on your regimen. You are on the right track.

I don't know if you are applying make-up, but if you do, then I would suggest using "Loreal Magic Perfecting Base" BEFORE applying any type of pressed/powder foundation makeup as this base diminishes the pore size. It makes pores look finer and smaller.. You can buy this at Walmart at Loreal cosmetic area. Cost is approx CD$12-13... This is a temporary/alternative solution if this bothers you.

At night, make sure that you properly remove any traces of make-up as this will clog pores. Use a proper cleanser for your skin type. Also don't forget to moisturize after cleansing as I don't see it here except Retin-A.
