I am fresh out of Esthetician school, and have an opportunity to take a position at a salon. I will have booth rent after a few months when I have clients built up, but I profit from 100% of my services. My question is what advice can anyone give me, what type of products would be great to use just starting out, and what services would be great to perform that wont cost an arm and a leg, I dont want to buy any machines just yet, until I am able to build my business. I didnt know where would be the best place to ask these question, so if Im in the wrong place, please let me know? I would gladly appreciate any imput that is given.

I took my esthetics course in Ontario.
What products did you use in school? (I won't recommend the line we used.)
Also if you take additional courses in skin care (Dermalogica, etc.) you might want to use their products. Also if you go to beauty shows you will see products there.
As far as services that require little product; nails, waxing, makeup, lash and brow tinting, etc. Makeup is my favorite and you could offer to purchase the lipstick, etc for them. Good markup for you.
What services do you like doing?
I am really not the best one to answer as I took the course but I am not working in a salon.
Maybe check out some esthetics forums? |

I really enjoy spas with Dermalogica or Dr. Hauschuka. Both lines are comprehensive and consistently good with many subdivisions for a variety of skin types.
Before you ignore machines, look into high frequency. They are reasonably inexpensive for a pro version and I won't get a facial at a place that doesn't have it because of the finished texture it leaves. |

I would confirm you can rent right out of school, look into liability insurance for you and start keeping excellent records for taxes.
Then start thinking about fun stuff like products! Will you get towels and sheets included in your rent? Paper products like cotton 4x4s and cotton rounds. |

I have looked into high frequency, and I think I really do need to purchase that machine, if any starting up. What does this machine do for your skin?

I have looked into insurance and will get that, what type of records would you suggest to help with taxes??? I will have to purchase all my products, supplies,etc... myself, would you suggest any certain towels to buy, and any good websites to purchase products from? |

New1: are you in the US or Canada? In Canada, lash and brow tinting is very common and taught in schools. Many good brands around.
I think you really need to go to a trade show this year. Preferably for esthetics; but the hair shows do have great products also. There is lots to look at and these are a lot of fun.
What beauty supply stores are near you? Very often they will offer specialized training that is one day. I like to shop at my local Cosmo Prof. |

Im in the US., and we touched lightly on the tinting services offered in school, which were both of those. Yes, Ill look into those shows, hope they have one. I also have a Cosmo Prof, in town as well. What all would I need to purchase to apply eyelash and brow tint? |

This is where my spa gets the brow and lash tint. It is a super easy service to do. I think we get our wax and disposable products from Cosmo Prof. But I am sure Universal has them too. |

Lash and brow tinting requires tint and the developer as far as product. Small investment but once you get clients "hooked" they will be coming back on a regular basis.
I also suggested waxing as it is a small start up cost.
In regards to makeup, take a look at lines at your local supplier. |

There is a thread on HF- but for a short term effect post facial it kills surface bacteria and leaves skin feeling smooth and polished, even the first use. |
