Hello!
I was just going thru my cosmetics cabinet and I started reading the labels for the SPFs I already have and I noiced something WEIRD!
Neutrogena SPF 30 has got :
1,9% Zinc Oxide
Olay SPF 30 has got:
6.0% Zinc Oxide
How come there is such a big difference in the amount of Zinc Oxide and yet they are both SPF 30?

The Neutrogena probably uses more chemical sunscreens like avobenzone, octocrylene to achieve the spf 30. The Olay is using more "organic" physical blocker like zinc oxide to achieve the spf 30. The problem with "spf" is that it reflects protection from UVB light (the tanning rays). But it doesn't measure protection from UVA at all. UVA is constant year-round and penetrates more deeply than UVB. UVA is what causes the wrinkling/aging phenomenon. (Not to say UVB doesn't, too, but not as deep...) That's why you'll see comments like "look for broad spectrum protection", "protects from UVA and UVB" on some bottles. Those mftrs. are trying to demonstrate that their formulations will protect you from both types of UV light. In Europe, Japan, etc. they use PPD instead of SPF which measures UVA protection....Best protective ingredients (chemical) are mexoryl and tinosorb but not approved for use in US by FDA so none of our sunscreens contain these. |

betterat40-Thanks for your explanation regarding SPF. Like Aga, I've also wondered about these variances.
Do you have any recommendations of a good sunscreen. I've currently been using a sunscreen from Babor but I'm not completely satisfied with it. It seems thick.
Thanks,
Stephanie |

Great explanation of zinc oxide differences. I'm impressed!! My mom (dermatologist) happens to think that the organic ingredient of zinc oxide is better than the various chemical blockers that neutrogena uses.
Two good sunblockers that I can think of off the top of my head are:
La Roche Posay's anthelios 60SPF (they have lesser SPF's too i think)
Blue Lizard (was an australian brand) is a good SPF too. The bottle color changes when you enter direct sunlight telling you that it's time to put on your trusty sunscreen |

Stable ones I know about are Coppertone Faces Oil-Free Faces spf 30, Shiseido spf 55, LaRoche Posay Anthelios product line, Allene product line at CVS drugstores, Bioderma Lait 20/30 and PhotoDerm 100....The last few are not readily available in the US but can be ordered via ebay or internet stores. If you go to makeupalley.com, the skincare board has a member's notepad, Nora80, that lists many brands that are stable and have both UVA/UVB protection. |

I also read that zinc and titanium oxides are used as thickening agents. If you look at many of the ingrediants of the products on your shelf, many of them contain these oxides, but claim no SPF. |
