Hi there,
I've been using BPO for my acne over years now.
It's a BPO gel named Duac and it helps alot for acne.
But now I've read that it causes premature skin aging and although I've been using it so many years, I'm starting to get worried about it.
Is it true that if I continue BPO, that my skin ages faster than normal or is it just a side-effect that will disappear when stop using it?
I'm worried.
Another question is: Is there any alternative for BPO users? |

I have been using Benzoyl Peroxide on and off for about 15 years. Occasionally I have given it up and tried other different products but I have not found anything that controls my acne as well BP does.
It brings extra oxygen to the skin thus killing the acne causing bacteria which cannot live in an oxygen rich environment. According to this it should cause the skin to age faster as it would cause oxidative damage to the skin. I don't exactly know how BP breaks down once it is applied to the skin and it comes in contact with air. I believe it reacts with oxidizing particles creating benzoic acid and oxygen. Is the oxygen unstable or...? How long does this process go on once it is applied to the skin? Does it keep oxidizing the skin for hours or does it become inactive after a few minutes of application? I am not a chemist and don't have an answer to these questions but it seems to be complicated. I know that victims of stroke can be injured even more by administering too much oxygen too quickly. On the other hand burn victims and people with severe skin infections are placed in hyperbaric chambers which seem to help in the skin healing. I don't know...
I just know that it keeps my acne at bay and at almost 40 years old my skin looks better and healthier than my 30 year old cousins. Of course I use good skin care and use sunscreen every single day. I exercise and have a very healthy diet. There are a lot of factors involved in skin ageing and there is a lot you can do to help delay the process. |

I have always believed that it causes oxidation and therefore premature aging. Rather that continuously spinning in circles treating acne, you need to find out what is causing it. Mine was a food allergy, and eliminating harsh OTC medications, the offending food, and adding a crash course of retin-a, solved the issue once and for all. |
