Just a brief history - I am post-menopausal, no real symptoms any more (FINALLY!) and at a recent visit to my doctor's we were talking about how I'm a bit more tired lately, etc.. and after a Thyroid test came back on the normal side though slightly borerline hyperthyroid, she suggested supplementing with Iosol Iodine - starting with one drop/day and working my way up to 5 drops a day... Well, I had gotten to 4 drops - with no REAL difference in how I felt, but oddly my hair was almost too soft... but I didn't really feel that much different - didn't notice a huge change in energy, etc... and then I started reading that iodine supplementation is bad and that there could be bad side effects, etc so I stopped... I had really wanted to use it for my hair and nails as I had also read that continued use of iodine supplementation could help re-grow hair and eliminate nail ridges (again, I didn't see any change there either).

I supplement w/ Fish Oil, Biotin, Magnesium, Aloe Vera Juice, a hair/skin/nails supplement, and D3 - oh wait...also Pycnogenol (really helped my melasma) and Ashwaghanda for adrenals - but not every day...

What's your take on iodine? Are we really that deficient?

Cheers!

Maria

Hi Mariav - What type of iodine are you taking?

I take Lugol's 5% iodine - only two drops a day. My nails don't break (as much) but I still have vertical ridges (I think I've always had them, though). However, taking iodine has greatly helped with my fibrocystic breasts (as advised by Dr. David Derry).

I was directed to a youtube video by Dr. Sherry Tenpenny talking about iodine deficiency. It's about an hour long - I haven't watched it yet (on my "to do" list!). She talks about what else you need when you take iodine (selenium, etc.).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMjKmi12UX0

In the meantime, here's a pdf about iodine supplementation (only 16 pages):

http://home.comcast.net/~jocy1/junk/The%20Guide%20to%20Supplementing%20with%20Iodine.pdf

Also, I have started taking organic sulphur (MSM) and I hope this will smooth out my nails.

Hope the video/PDF has answers for you.

Cheers, Bess

I started taking Lugel's (both me and the hubby) and I really did start to feel better. Just 5 drops a day in my water or coffee and the fog lifted!
The only down side was I started to break out with facial acne so I stopped. Crying or Very sad
Anyone else break out?

I don't take iodine supplements, but I started eating more seaweeds to increase my intake. I eat a lot of raw brassica family veggies this time of year, and they harm your body's ability to absorb iodine.

I do apologize for not having much to add right here. Laughing I just thought the info might help anyone who was taking their supplements with certain foods.

Like many foodies I use a slightly fancy sea salt. And my medical source told me that sea salt has no iodine and that unless you use iodized salt you are definitely short of the substance. So he gives me something called Cetaflex F that I use as I have no desire to get thyroid disease and don't want to give up my nice salt... HTH

Bessie - I am taking Iosol Iodine as per the recommendation of my doctor. She gave me a bunch of literature regarding Iosol vs. Lugol's and I guess Iosol is supposed to be gentler...less likely to have side effects... etc... Like I said, I certainly didn't feel any ill effects...but then again I didn't feel any real positive effects either.. but maybe I didn't give it enough time.

Hi Mariav,

I take kelp 225 mcg (for iodine)and Selenium 200 mcg.

Google 'iodine an important nutrient today – Dr. Wilson'

You'll find some great information on that site that most Dr’s know little about.

I started Lugol's based on an EDS member who I trust's input. My hands are cold... and other indicators long term. I am taking 2drops/day.

I have been taking Lugol's for years (& posted about it here some time ago as well). Took 100- 125 mg (yes mg) for several years & currently still take 50mg daily. I had a very nasty toxic exposure involving Brominated compounds (& other chemicals)& was able to detox successfully using this. (yes I did experience sxs) Frankly Lugol's saved my life & I am very grateful to the doc who originally told me about it. (despite the fact he hadn't a clue as how to use it) (one of my other docs subsequently told me that taking it at high doses would kill me & that was 7 years ago - LOL)

The pdf posted earlier in this thread is excellent & very worthwhile reading!

See an endocrinologist and have a battery of blood tests, including one to see if you have antibodies for Hashimoto's disease. Most GPs are clueless when it comes to thyroid.

If you are tired, you are HYPOthyroid and not HYPERthyroid. Some types of thyroid disease are made worse by iodine. Happened to me. It also takes months of blood tests and gradually increasing doses until your blood work and your symptoms show improvement.

I find that my nails and hair grow faster now that my meds are optimized.

Has anyone else experienced outbreaks from iodine?

Ray Peat, a biologist who specializes in thyroid, nutrition and women's health is against iodine. He recommends eliminating polyunsaturated fats (he says they inhibit thryoid function)and taking thyroid hormone (T3 & T4). There's a lot of help on forums that discuss his work:

Gretchen,

I am curious - if Ray Peat is against iodine - how does he propose ridding oneself of toxic halogens?

Thx!

I've read much of the Ray Peat literature and have had many questions about things that did not seem logical... when asked these questions have not been answered. This may be another one.
There are so many 'diets' out there. It astounds me. I've just read a great book called "The EcoDiet" . It focuses on maintaining a strong alkaline-based (green) diet.
Take what works and leave the rest has always been my philosophy.

Peat says iodine is only safe to use in very small amounts (micrograms) and that a deficiency is actually in most cases a myth:
http://www.functionalps.com/blog/2011/10/12/the-myth-of-iodine-deficiency-an-interview-with-dr-ray-peat/

The problem with reading so much of the current "health and wellness" stuff is it isn't scientific, whereas everything Peat writes is.
