Hi there,
Could someone please tell me if soya lecithin is any good in a body lotion?
I got a body lotion which unfortunately reduces itself to less than half after about a month or do.
I'm thinking it might a) has too much air in it somehow and/or b) somehow the water reduces itself.
I was told to add a little bit of honey or glycerine. I generally don't like glycerin and honey is not vegan.
What are your thoughts on what could have happened that half the batch disappears on me?
And what are your thoughts on soya lecithin?
What percentage should I use? 0.5% or 1%?
And should I reduce the oil or water by that percentage?
Thank you in advance!
Regards,
Mel |

That's really, really strange. Is this a batch that you *aren't* using?
Like maybe you're just using more of it than you think you are or something? |

I wish it was but it's one I made for a market about 6 weeks ago but didn't sell so it was in my storage room (at normal temperature - not hot).

Man, that really sucks!
Humectants will help it from drying out. I think glycerin or sorbitol would be better than lecithin, but you never know. But it's just so weird that you lost *half* of the mass in a short time. Is it possible that you accidentally incorporated too much air during the mixing? Maybe it deflated like a souffle or something.
I've actually done experiments with my recipes where I'll leave them out in an opened container just to see how fast they dry out and if the preservative system can withstand an open environment. I've never seen something reduce down to half, so there's something weird going on here. The worst any of my stuff every dried out was just a tiny bit of dark'pudding skin' on the top. And that was a conditioner that didn't have any humectants in it whatsoever. |

Too much air is possible but I can't see what to change in the mixing process.
I also have a hand cream that I literally have to mix for over 20 minutes to make sure it doesn't get too airy.
I'm wondering why those two are the opposite of each other.
I might make two small batches, one with a bit more Em Wax and the other one with honey just to test it.
Might also try to poor the water a little slower into the oil phase, although I can't see that making much of a difference.
My best guess at this stage to make it a bit heavier with the Em Wax.
What do you think?
