I have acne now again and its very frustrating. Male and 26. I have went to dermatologist before back many years ago when my acne was bad and i finally cleared it up using facial products i bought. It seemed like any dermatologist always do the same thing, prescribe you some antibiotic or some benzoyl peroxide.
I been trying to treat myself and that isn't working though that worked for me back a few years ago. I guess the products i use now are not effective anymore.
Has anyone been to a dermatologist where they actually helped clear their acne? I feel like going there is a waste of time. I dont have insurance and will pay out of my own pocket but i dont care. The thing is i know they aren't going to do anything different and tell me something i don't know.
Am i right or wrong with this? Like if they go and prescribe a cream thats probably Benzoly peroxide. Or antibiotics. And i read lot of ppl say never go on antibiotics for acne as its horrible for it.
Thoughts? |

There have been a lot of advancements in dermatology in the last few years. Go to someone fairly young because they won't be as stuck in the past doing the same old thing. |

My horrible acne really cleared up when I cleaned up my diet, also cutting out dairy. Probably most important was stopping the dairy. Have you tried this? |

I do not eat dairy at all. I use to eat lot of cheese but completely stopped it b/c i knew acne flared when i ate this. |

Stopping dairy helped me too, but I pretty much just stopped whole milk but when I eat cheese nothing really happens..but the again I don't eat too much of it.
Anyways I have really bad hormonal acne with eczema and peeling skin on the face area.
Personally when I went to the derm they perscribed things that just dried out my face more so I stopped using the prescription topicals, and went on with switching to natural products rich in antioxidants.
I have been using 100% pure's superfruits serum as a moisturizer, I add a small squirt of emu oil in it and have been using for a long while now and my skin has been looking amazing I have been getting a lot of complements.I also use alba botanicas pineapple enzyme face wash twice a day.
Also for things to start working effectively on the skin and hair you need to stay in the same routine(products) for 3 months. So if you can't find anything soulution wise I suggest this... look up the ingredients in the serum there all berry oils,if you don't have dry skin I wouldn't add the emu oil..but I would recommend adding at least a few drops.
Anyways bottom line I have been in and out of the derms office all the time and nothing they suggest has worked so I do my own thing now.
As for the antibiotics..I'm actually on amoxiline right night because I have/had strep and an ear infection and I did get some pimples at the edge of my mouth but real small 2 ones, ive been on for 10 days but I don't think thhey have really effected my acne too much...my acnes actually gone besides those 2 pimples all I have are some redmarks now.
And since I've stopped useing the perscription topicals with the serum my face cleared up way faster! I also take gummy vitamins which I think helps a bit.
So yea I hope I helped a little... |

Okay to those of you who went and see a dermatologist, what do they usually tell you and precribe you? Do most just give you antibiotics? I heard taking these is a horrible idea.
When i went to a few back years ago, all they did was prescribe me a cream on my face and it didn't do nothing for it.
Also, im very worried about trying any cream that might prescribe b/c im worried things would get worst. |

And is it true antibiotics is really bad? I read some ppl on acne forums say whatever you do... never go on antibiotics.
And is there always purging once you are on antibiotics? I took antibiotics like 10 years ago and it didnt do anything. |

I would say it is no longer a first line of defense in skin care.
My history with dermatologists is extensive and always detrimental.
I find the antibiotics/prescriptions and topicals most dermatologists provide are insanely irritating. There also isn't a lot of discussion. Doctors really don't like to be questioned especially dermatologists. Most offices are charged with showcasings certain pharaceutical brands and will literally push them on you, even though it could irritate your skin. I hate the medical sentiment of "it's worked for this person for twenty years so it MUST work for you." I have Crohn's Disease and my body is very sensitive to internal/external changes. It's always frustrating when these facts aren't even considered by professionals.
I suggest finding a local esthetician. They are much more caring and knowledgable with effective treatment of the different skin types + products to use on each. Estheticians are able to adapt to different skin situations better than an over worked dermatologist in my opinion. They don't rush and are generally economical.
I had the most luck investigating my skin type and finding products/brands that support its health. Once I understood how to read my skin in terms of its health, things are going well. |

first they percribed benzonal peroxide wash and I mixed it with my previous topical they gave me to use everyday which caused chemical burns...and when I say burns I don't mean red flaky patches I mean dark purple puffy dead scarred skin.then after I went back with the burns they gave me mineral oil to put on..it helped the burns a lot. I burned the worst under my eyes and the corners of my mouth, it took months to get better.
Then they gave me birth controlnext which was making me sick and my hair was falling out in clumps so I stopped that after 6 months.
A year ago they perscribed me a gel called aczone, its used for leprosy actually and cost 225$ for 2-4 oz (that's what it coast me cuz I don't have insercance)it really helped, It was the kick off to getting clearer skin, but it was drying out my already dry skin. I stopped it months ago and my skin looks amazing. So i mean I do think it helped me clear up the super bad acne but once the skin got to a point where I was only breaking out with pimples around my period It didn't do much except dry the skin. But occasionally I do use it for a spot treatment. |

I don't have good health insurance so haven't been to a derm in ages. It was helpful though. I still use a modified regimen from what I started then: Salycilic 2% by day, Retin A at night.
Almost everything else helpful I have learned from this forum or from my acupuncturist.
-sulphur masks both as an occasional mask and spot treatment
-Microcurrent device (I use NuFace) or High Frequency Device
-dietary changes like less sugar/dairy/gluten
-Vitamin B12 shots |

My personal opinion based on experience is that dermatologists offer limited solutions, and they are very often not the best ones. I wouldnt bother with them. |

Has anyone else had a positive experience with aczone? I stopped going to my dermatologist because everything that she has prescribed has not worked! The only thing that helped was accutane but that was ten years ago and now the acne is back...it is hormonal in my case around the chin area. I am debating on whether or not to see my family doctor and ask him for aczone. I wanted to hear what others have experienced using it. TIA! |

I have only gone to derms to either have them inject me with filler or to have moles removed and all of them have tried to push a skincare line on me...I want my med professionals to stick to medicine and not try to sell me other stuff, but hey, that's just me.

I guess I am so lucky. Mine never pushed a product on me. In fact, they don't want to go into it. When I asked if I need to be concerned with ingredients and what to look for in a moisturizer, he said I can use whatever I want and my prescription will help my skin, but he dis show interest in knowing what product I was using and was very okay with it. |

As an acne sufferer I've been to dermatologists. Some have prescribed topical creams, some antibiotics, some birth control pills for acne. In this day and age of people wanting a more holistic approach to lifestyle, it's VERY common for people to tell their dermatologists that they refuse to take antibiotics or go on birth control pills or accutane. The reason why antibiotics are prescribed is because it kills the acne bacteria but as a downfall it is killing your good bacteria too that you need. My dermatologist prescribed me a 2 month cycle of antibiotics, I took it and noticed a great improvement. I went back to the derm for a follow up and he wanted for me to still continue another 2 months!! I didn't due to not wanting to be on long term antibiotics for obvious reasons. I sought out a naturopath to give me advice and in my opinion they didn't do anything.
I think my next step would be beta peels since this has helped a lot for me or blu-U with levulan treatments at the derm office |

I know. I had the very same thought and I didn't know what brand is considered safe that is sold on this market. Especially sold in Canada.
I've heard of Esthaderm institut (don't know if I have the correct spelling) to be very good, but I can't seem to find it in Canada. |
