The case of Carolyn Hartz, 70 years old:

Sure, she's probably had some 'work', but she still looks great. Cutting out refined sugar is helpful, but not that helpful. Also, from her sample diet, she does consume plenty of sugar (fruit, dairy products), just not refined sugar. So I started to wonder, was it getting rid of refined sugar, or adding xylitol?
I searched PubMed and found that xylitol has some interesting effects:
Foremost, it increases collagen synthesis:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15832042
It blocks intestinal absorbtion of glucose:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25656339
It increases absorption of green tea catechins:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23551173
It improves immune system function:

{ Pity I don't like the taste more... I guess I'll get used to it. } |

I started making xylitol candy because someone here mentioned it years ago. It's weird, it's almost like I have more energy on the days I eat it. I don't think it's a catch all, but it's definitely great! |

Does anybody know if Fawnie still visits the forum? I remember she once had a lot to tell me about xylitol being used topically, but for the life of me I can't remember any of the details she shared. (I'm wanting to say that it was rumored to help with glycation, but that might just be when it's consumed.) When I was originally researching it myself I remember finding a lot of information about it's use in dentistry.
Maybe she'll see this thread and respond if I keep bumping it?
Anyway, I decided to make some "jello" out of xylitol after you made this thread, op. Thank you for kind of giving me the idea! Now I've got a snack that will promote collagen production along with the amino acids my body needs to make the collagen! LOL. It was 2 packets of gelatin, 2 cups water (total,) 1/4 cup xylitol, and a packet of black cherry kool aid. I probably should have used a fruit juice instead of something artificial, but I made due with what I had. It's so cool how it reflects light when I used xylitol instead of splenda or something else. It doesn't taste ridiculously sweet (should've used 1/2 cup but xylitol doesn't like to dissolve sometimes) but it tastes more sophisticated and unique than many of the other things I've made with gelatine. I owe you one! LOL. |

That jello sounds really good. I was thinking about using it with green tea since it is supposed to help with catechin absorption - though this might cause me stomach upset (too much green tea does that to me; too much cacao, same thing). The only way to know is to try, I suppose. { Green tea + vitamin C + xylitol jello! }
The anti-glycation angle seems like it would be from oral consumption - which is what I think might be going on with Ms Hartz, if xylitol is indeed responsible for her remarkable condition. OTOH, the photos from her (relatively) younger days show she's always had a good amount of muscle development, and that's really helpful for skin and aging generally.
Nonetheless, I'll try the xylitol topically and see what happens. |

Thank you for bringing this theme up. I was already restricting sugar (out of health reasons) to only 2 treats on the weekend. I had an acquaintance who did not eat sugar for 20 years and he did look very young. So I am a believer that a sugar-free diet promotes good health. However, I had a hard time finding good substitutes. The idea that Xylitol might actually be good for the skin and add minerals seems to be too good to be true. Have stocked up with xylitol chocolate and will try to use only this for the next 6 months!
Let's see - Carolyn Hartz is certainly an inspiration. |

Xylitol induces expression of FGF21, a pro-longevity hormone:

One unpleasant side effect I've noticed is that it seems to have caused changes in my gut microbiome as evidenced by {TMI warning} ...
stinkier farts. Perhaps this will lessen over time... |

I do use xylitol but also
Tagatose which has been clinically studied for
type II diabetes. It does not have the cooling effect of xylitol but I do not know about other health benefits. Sugar alcohols have been used in gum for a very long time and actually protect against tooth decay. I eat berries but almost no
white flour or refined sugar (and have for many years). My skin is quite good for my age (low 60's)basically only lines around my mouth and no other facial lines. |
