Will layering a physical sunscreen, with uva filters, over La Roche Posay Anthelios XL melt in cream increase or decrease the ppd/uva protection my skin has? Plus which sunscreen has the highest ppd protection in the world? So far the highest I have found is La Roche Posay Anthelios XL melt in cream which has a ppd of 42. I am mainly concerned about UVA protection, are there any sunscreens with higher ppd protection? Thank you for your time. |

You can layer a physical sunscreen (zinc oxide and or titanium dioxide filters) over a chemical sunscreen. Your protection comes from the highest rated sunscreen. (most likely the chemical) The advantage of layering SS is that your whole face is definitely covered. Also, physical sunscreens tend to be water resistant and also some are tinted.
I am not sure what is the highest rated PPD sunscreen. I would be curious if someone had the answer.
I have the La Roche Posay spf 60 melt in cream - Canadian. It would be great for dry skin.
Is your LRP SS, European formula or Canadian? In general, the European formulas have better PPD ratings. Also look at the Asian sunscreens; cosmetically elegant AND high UVA protection. |

Thank you autumn, so just for clarification, layering a physical sunscreen over anthelios xl will not dilute the ppd strength of anthelios xl, correct? |

I've found some great sunscreen experts on MakeupAlley. There was some talk awhile ago about applying a physical over chemical and it causing skin damage somehow...as I recall...maybe worth checking up on that.

I'm not Autumn, but: No, it will probably not dilute it.
Chemical sunscreens can get diluted by using a lot of skincare products at the same time, but since you're throwing another sunscreen on top of it, I think it breaks even. Like there wouldn't be enough water soluble ingredients in the physical sunscreen to counteract the sunscreen actives.....I'm putting too much thought into this. You know what I'm saying, I hope? |

Physically speaking, to achieve best result, physical sunscreens should be under chemical ones. |

Actually I have read otherwise. Dr. Baumann recommends chemical then physical sunscreen. |
