I'm a 48 year old that has been battling thinning hair for the past 3 years. I take two different prescription medications to try to control the thinning and recently broke down and consulted with a well respected dermatologist who performs hair transplants.

During the consult I learned that he also performs a stand alone Acell/PRP injection scalp treatment that utilizes a dermaroller.

Due to my hesitation during the consult he recommended that I use a regimen at home for 6 months that includes dermarolling my scalp and the use of Rogaine. He was short on instructions so of course I looked it up on the internet. During the research I came across many articles on dermarolling for skincare to include fine lines/wrinkles/sagging and stretchmarks.

I've read so many different articles and posts that now I'm not even sure where to start and I'm hoping some of you experienced folks will indulge a beginner.

Besides the scalp treatments, which I have figured out, I need help on the skin care side.

1) I've read many posts and articles that state that I need to perform some skin care treatments PRIOR to starting to use the dermaroller ( I've even read 4 weeks worth!). My question is two part, Is this necessary? If it is, then what kind of treatment would be right for me? I have very sensitive skin and have attempted to use Vit C serums and copper peptides before and ended up with red bumps and splotches on my face. I've also seen something called "dry rubbing" but i don't know what that is!!!

2) My goal is to tackle the wrinkles and sagging skin on my face, neck, and chest as well as my tiger stripes ( my affectionate reference to the 17 year old stretch marks that cover the lower half of my torso). What size dermarollers do I need to buy? .5mm, 1.5mm?? Something called dermastamps?? I found a site from another country, owndoc, that also shows a video of a woman using a dermaroller on her face and forearms and one of the rollers that was used for deeper lines only had a single row of needles on wheel. I've looked around trying to find a good resource to purchase the rollers but other than the owndoc site I'm running into barriers. Can you recommend WHERE to buy the tools? Even the single needle version I couldn't find on the owndoc site.

3) What should I put on my skin before and after rolling? The owndoc site recommends one of their own products which sounds similar to A&D ointment.

4) Frequency of home treatment on face and the frequency on the tiger stripes? I reading a lot of conflicting information that runs the gamut of daily to every 6 weeks. What have you found that works best?

I know I have a lot of questions and some of you will probably tell me to read the posts... I have and still don't know what would be best for me. I can't afford $100 serums and I need to keep things as simple as possible for sustainability. I work 10 hour days and if the system is too complicated then my compliance would be in jeopardy I fear.

Is there anyone who can help me find something that will work for me?

I am assuming when you say you have already read the threads on dermarolling, you don't mean on this forum. Because as much as I don't bother going out of my way to research things I do not use, I can't help but think the questions you are asking have been answered umpteen times, so not sure how you missed them. Here is a thread with suggestions to help clear the fog:

I am also dealing with hairloss, but hadn't really considered a dermaroller because of the fear of getting hair caught in the roller. I am going to start rogaine though, and just picked a product that also had niacin in it as I believe that will help as well.

Can I ask what prescriptions you are taking?

Can I ask what prescriptions you are taking?

I began taking spironalactone prior to the hairloss to help with cystic acne but the dosage was much lower. For the past three years I've been taking 100 mg twice a day to decrease shedding and I added 2.5 mg of finasteride.

Surprisingly the dermaroller doesn't get tangled in my hair and I have very curly hair! I carefully roll in a single direction at a time and as I roll each section with my free hand I pull my hair straight against my scalp in the same direction I'm rolling. My instructions were to NOT be aggressive and only put enough pressure on the roller to feel a tingling sensation. Oh, and I should mention that the rolling is only performed once a week. The night you use the dermaroller you DO NOT apply the minoxidil. The purpose of the roller is to increase circulation not to increase the absorption of the medication.

I've also begun taking several vitamin supplements to include MSM, biotin, D3 (which I'm perpetually deficient), biosil, evening primrose oil, B complex, and a multi-vitamin. I dislike taking meds but if this is what it takes to keep my hair then I'll do it.

Another product recommended by the HT doc was Surge shampoo which contains caffeine and an anti-fungal med. He suggested not using it like a shampoo but think of it as a scalp treatment, using a small amount in your palm and applying it to your scalp. Allow it to lay on your scalp while you shower and at the end of your shower then was your hair with your favorite shampoo. The poo is expensive and he suggested this method to make it go further.

Good luck to you with your new treatment!

Hair loss/thinning:

I've recently purchased a bottle of saw palmetto vitamins in the extract form. Dermaroller your scalp won't solved your internal problems about hair loss. You should look into researching this natural plant vitamin. You'll be surprised as to why your losing hair. As myself, I'm not losing hair, but this vitamin helps to restore/thicker hair growth. Pre-caution to those who are on bc. I'm only on the pill which will go away in a couple days once you stop taking it which is when I play to start this vitamin.

Acne/vitamins/internal/external:

I've starting drinking Aloe Vera Juice by "Lily of the Desert." you'd be surprised what is in this plant. It's packed with vitamins and minerals! Surprisingly, this has made my hair grow faster (wasn't taking it for that reason). I've also started using it in gel form by the same brand. It contains organic aloe vera inner fillet gel.

As far as dermarolling for the scalp -- it was only recommended to create stimulation on your scalp, but a good brush and shampoo/conditioner works just fine. Also an interesting fact is that scalps on peoples heads can become 'clogged' ex. dandruff. which suffocates your hair follicles. I'm in love with Paul Mitchell and his tea tree shampoo and lemon sage conditioner! This and drinking the aloe juice has made my hair grow faster.

My reasoning for Saw Palmetto is because it's a hormonal plant. It helps to balance hormones. Men and women both have testosterone and estrogen and sometimes some get more than their suppose to get (ex. men could get more estrogen resulting in unwanted features, same with women)

The only reason why I was on bc was to control my hormonal acne. But I've been trying to find natural forms to use instead of synthetic. I can't say that SP works for everyone due to reviews, but I only believe that is because they didn't come up with a proper dosage for themselves. Some reported to use 1300 mg while some only need to use 640 mg.

As far as hair transplants go seems a little extreme for me.

If you want something to work for wrinkles, etc. try my aloe juice suggestion! It's very beneficial! Good luck!
