I really don't think there is a way to lengthen your neck. In other words, I don't think you can go from this:
...to this:
However, I was going to suggest that perhaps wearing coils like Kayan women do might help ...
...but they do this from when they are kids first and foremost. Then I read an article that said that their necks do not really get long but rather their clavicle is pushed down to create the illusion of having a long neck (link).
This article is about a woman from that tribe who removed hers in protest. At the end of the article is a link to pics of more Kayan women without their coils. Their necks do look long but maybe that's just genetic and had nothing to do with the coils.
If wearing a coil is not a fashion statement that works for you, then:
- avoiding wearing long earrings;
- if you have long hair, wearing it in updos to expose your neck;
- also wearing V-cut tops instead of turtlenecks so some of your chest is exposed extending neck skin exposure and making neck look long;
- learning to hold your head up like a dancer so it is not slumped forward but rather it is as if you're suspended from the ceiling with a string attached to your crown and doing this without straining;
- not wearing clanky necklaces/chokers that swallow your neck...
...are some ways you can make your neck not look so short. |

Hi, if you hold tension on your shoulder and neck area, that in itself shortens the neck muscle area a lot,...in that case the exercises would help to ease tension and lengthen the muscles. Just doing a search will come up with quite a lot of web pages with exercises for lengthening the neck, like http://www.ehow.com/way_5212558_neck-lengthening-exercises.html...
If it is not the case and you don't hold tension on your neck/shoulder area probably exercises will help tone, but it is genetics that will determine the type of neck we have as Nonie has visually stated with the pics posted, and besides the advice she has recomended I can only add something not mentioned is weight, which is not part of your question but I've seen has a lot to do with neck size! When I put on weight my neck thickens and the visual effect is of a shorter neck, as soon as I lose weight and the neck slims down it looks longer too. |

Nonie
Both Atester and Nonie have given good advice.
Would also look in to something called 'The Alexander Technique' if you are really interested in 'releasing the neck'. |

Thanks for the replies guys
I remember when i had flex effect the exercise where you hang your head over the edge of the bed and lift it up to be in line with your body...this exercise was said to elongate the neck however it was warned that it can also thicken and widen the neck which would make it look shorter anyway...soooo wasnt sure whether to try it or not |

Be glad you don't have too long a neck. People with them often have terrible problems, and think how bad it would look if genetically inherited by a boy! As the others have said: clothing and hairdo choices can make it look fab, while being a safe and sensible length. |

The Flexeffect exercises are not meant to lengthen the neck but strengthen and muscles, filling out the skin nicely to prevent sag. |

These are all great suggestions. Yoga is also wonderful. A long neck is the cornerstone of ballet so if you can find a good adult ballet class it might be helpful.
This might sound nutty but one thing I do is to place soft sand filled ankle weights on the top of my head and lift up with the top of my head but pull down with my shoulders. I'm hoping the weights will strengthen the bones and muscles in my neck. It seems to be working. Well, that in many years of dancing. |

Good point Tiptoe - as women we should perhaps be more concerned about strength to prevent osteoporosis than whether we look like swans! |
