Lately I have come to the realization that there are many service providers including dentists, doctors, hair stylists (I used to be one) estheticians, etc who are just plain careless and you have to really keep an eye out or something might get screwed up. I have two porcelain crowns on top of two dental implant (I had a baby tooth with no adult tooth underneath it) and I went to the periodontist who did my implant to have my cleaning done. I don't have periodontal disease or anything like that, but I just went to his office because I'm already familiar with his hygienist.
Well, she used the saltwater sprayer tool on my teeth and then I found out from the dentist who did crowns that the saltwater spray tool is never supposed to be used on porcelain because it can ruin the porcelain. So I emailed my periodontist's office (and I was upset) about this and asked why it was used on me when I have porcelain crowns. They said that they've never heard of any damage to porcelain with this tool and then added "if you need to go to another office for your cleanings, we understand." Maybe I'm overreacting, but it kind of upsets me that they would say that after I've spent thousands in their office. I have two dental implants. THe response kind of made me feel like I'm some type of freak just for asking this question.
When I go to my hair stylist, I will request her not to cut my layers too short (this has happened so many times.. so many hair stylists have messed up my layers and then I have to grow them back out) and yet, she still does. I can't seem to get the beautiful haircuts I see on European models/celebrities. I notice in Europe, they don't go all crazy with the layers. layers are never noticeable over there- they are soft and blended! (Italians really know hair).
Estheticians have been too rough on my skin before. I will tell them it is sensitive and they will use a product that flares it up or scrub it with those scrubby sponges which just makes it inflamed. Then you get the $150 facial bill... I stopped getting facials and I just do them at home myself now. At least if I do something wrong, I can only blame myself.
I've had my brows threaded and my brows end up looking like a drag queen - overly arched and way too thin even when I specifically tell them, "Please do not make them too thin". Last time I got them threaded (in a higher end salon), some creepy man wanted to stand there and watch the whole process. Um, no thanks! I stopped having that done and now just shape my own brows.
I realize this might sound like I'm hard to please. But I'm pretty low maintenance on most things like services (but I love my skin care and makeup products). I don't feel like I'm asking for the moon. My haircut is pretty basic, for example (long layers and a basic dark brown color).
Lastly, I've never done any lasers, chemical peels, or injectables on my face, but I've read so many horror stories - fat loss, orange peel texture, etc. I've vowed to myself to never let a laser touch my face after some of the stuff I've read!
So what about you all? Do you relate to this or have any experiences that you'd like to share? It has just started to feel to me like even professionals don't have your best interest in mind, but they are more than happy to take your money.
I'm not saying there aren't great service providers out there because I know there are. Unfortunately, I have never really found many. Maybe one or two in my entire 29 years! |

I really don't have answers. I do understand as I have wavy hair and very sensitive skin. I am picky about my hair and skin. I did sell hair products years ago and have my esthetic certificate so I do have some knowledge.
I do agree about the Italians knowing how to cut hair! They always won the hair competitions at the hair shows.
I think the mistakes that health care providers (dentists, etc) do is what worries me the most. |

Are you talking about this post about the Prophy Jet?
http://www.mynewsmile.com/horrorstories/porcelain_veneers_damage.htm
Hmm lets see ... it was written to promote the MyNewSmile product so maybe its biased? Where else is there evidence that it harms porcelain? |

Hi, fawnie!
I did see that page, but that wasn't the only reason I felt upset. I personally asked the cosmetic dentist who placed my 2 crowns and he told me that only a pumice-free paste should be used to clean the porcelain and that the prophy jet shouldn't be used on porcelain. He told me in the future to make sure no one uses that on them again. Porcelain is set with a glaze to make the crown look like your natural teeth and the prophy jet can take that off.
My dentist who placed these crowns has no reason to lie to me.. afterall, he already got my money. The website page, in my opinion, doesn't really have a reason to lie either.. because as far as the product, it's just cosmetic dental services. I've read other things too where it says the prophy jet can remove the glaze. People with porcelain crowns also shouldn't get fluoride treatments because it can cause etching in the porcelain.
There's just a ton of stuff they don't take the time to tell you... pretty much across the board in any industry. Customer service is just down the tube.
I feel upset that the office that did the cleaning keeps standing behind their use of the prophy jet on porcelain.
There's also this, which I definitely trust:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1827842
It bothers me that the office who did the cleaning (this is the doctor who did my implants too and I paid him $$$$) said that if I need to find another office, they understand. That makes me feel really unappreciated as a patient. Would it be crazy to ask for a refund for the cleaning? I never do that, but this really bothers me and I feel that they shouldn't have used the prophy jet on the crowns. In the past she didn't do that and I feel like she was in a hurry this time. The prophy jet is quicker. |

I totally agree with what you're saying - I've had a week of screwups, too. One of my front teeth was shortened down to about half its size and I had to go back and have it bonded. He didn't charge me, but it was a perfectly good tooth to start with and only needed a tiny filling. I also understand about hairdressers. I cut the cord with one that I had gone to for over three years because she rushed me through and took me for granted. (I liked her very much, but I pay $100 every three weeks to get my hair done, and I felt she didn't show any concern at all.)
Add to the list the cosmetic companies that change products and don't think someone that has been using their product for years is going to notice. I had used a Merle Norman lipstick for years - loved the color and texture. I bought one last week and the color had changed from a very nuetral shade to a baby pink with frosting, and it came off within about three minutes of its application. Of course, I took it back, but I'm heartbroken about losing my product.
I guess there isn't any easy answers, but it is frustrating. |

Product reformations are the worst or just "not available" or discontinued. I always wish I had some notice so I could stock up! |

I don't have the answers as to why it keeps happening - poor customer service.
I can only do my part, show up on time, schedule for earlier part of the day, follow instructions (be prepped if I am supposed to be) not be a b!tch etc...
At the same time, we don't know what is going on the lives/heads of the people around us. I do know yesterday I worked 9 hours with no break and ate lunch standing up and snarfed it down in 5 mins. My last client didn't get the same attention to detail as my first. But I do try very hard to make sure everyone has a great experience. |

Bad customer service is just not acceptable, no matter what's going on in someone's life.
I recently got a batch of defective bottles and called the company to get replacements. The person who picked up the phone mumbled his name (I think) so that I had to ask him to repeat himself (clue #1). Then he wanted to argue with me about the way the bottle is to be used without hearing what I was saying. He had a Big Attitude but had to keep putting me on hold to "ask my supervisor". Why do companies put up with this?
Then, I went to a photo printing place and spoke to the owner at the counter. You would think she would be well versed in how to take an order. Wrong. Maybe her cat just died, but she just couldnt get it right for some reason. I try to be compassionate but my patience gets worn out sometimes with shoddy service. |

I have had good luck and am very loyal once I find someone good. I have had the same hairdresser for twenty years. However, he works at a high end salon and not a cheap one so he knows what he's doing. He is also willing to update my style so I don't look dated.
If I ever went to anyone bad, I'd just never go back. Vote with your wallet!
I had never heard that about porcelain crowns, by the way. I can't believe saltwater would hurt them. Porcelain is used in dishes and we all eat acidic foods. |
