I have a few patches of what seems to be eczema on my face by my eyebrow and on my temples on the same side. These spots will get very red and itchy when the flare. I use OTC hydrocortisone cream to take away the itch, but it comes back in a few days. Does anyone have a regimen or product suggestions that work for them? I was thinking of trying Avene, but it has mineral oil and I'm not sure that would be beneficial.
Thanks! |

IMO hydrocortisone creams are just a bandaid that covers up the problem without really solving it and makes you more dependent on them. I used to get eczema on my eyelids. I solved my problem with diet. I share more about that in this thread:

Neem oil does help some people. Available at health food stores. Very stinky (like curry or burnt onions). I always have a bottle on hand and have even used it on the dog.
As a last resort, are you able to get a prescription such as Elidel from your doctor? I use Elidel for a skin issue (off label - not eczema)that was a nightmare for months. It is originally prescribed for eczema as a steriod alternative but does work for other skin issues. |

Thank you for your suggestions. I was vegan for a year and gluten-free for a year after that, yet nothing has made it go away.
I am finding some success with raw coconut oil though. I find that it really helps with the itchiness and dryness. It has even helped with my chronically chapped lips! I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will help long term as I am not fond of using any prescriptions or steroids. |

Because of the location of your problem I wonder if you have considered that you may have developed a sensitivity to a hair product you are using. Most of us sleep on one side, would that be the side that would get most exposure to loose hair? |

Yes, cold-pressed organic coconut oil helped a baby who had eczema. Her mom would give her a full body massage with the oil after a bath and reported great results. We talked about coconut oil and eczema in this thread: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=47108 |

Mismis,
I have thought about the hair issue too. It is more prevalent on one side of my face which is also the side that I sleep on the most, but I sleep with my hair up in a bun so there is nothing loose. this has been around for years and I have switched through many different hair care products so unless it is one particular ingredient that is in all shampoos and conditioners, I would have to say that isn't the problem.
The coconut oil seems to be working for now. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
Thanks for your reply! |

alilicious I don't know if you know about systemic candidiasis. How I found out I had it is the eczema I used to have seemed to have spread to my left hand...and my left boob. Nowhere else. By coincidence I came across a booklet that had info on this and a questionnaire about symptoms I've had over time. On a whim, I took the advice and results of the booklet to be accurate and changed my diet. That didn't mean just being gluten-free. It included giving up anything processed or with additives and going back to basics. It involved cutting out dairy, sugar...replacing white rice with brown. Introducing foods like quinoa, buckwheat which I had never had before. Cutting out fermented foods, yeast.... The anti-candida diet is pretty strict and you get worse before you get better.
Another thing that makes me think your issue may be candida related, is hair loss and follicle infection are symptoms too and caprylic acid found in coconut is actually anti-fungal and a supplement recommended for candidiasis, which could explain why coconut oil is helping your rash. In fact, opening up a caprylic acid capsule and making a paste with water and applying it to bald patches is a remedy that I have seen used to treat candida-related hair loss.
When I developed my eczema like rash, it would not respond to the creams I had been prescribed for eczema. But applying the contents of a smelly garlic capsule did--because garlic is anti-fungal. Of course I didn't win a lot of friends with that smell so I would only use it at night. But the chamomile and hyssop cream I used to get from a naturopath helped and didn't smell that bad.
In addition to changing my diet, I also took supplements of caprylic acid, garlic, EFAs, probiotics and as potent a multi as I could find providing at least 25,000 IU of Vitamin A, 1000 mg of Vitamin C and 400 IU of Vitamin E...which is a combo you don't easily find in a complete multi-vitamin. So it was more than elimination but also strengthening the body by providing it with nutrients that heal.
