I find it remarkable that, despite all the advances in science, many--if not most--of the best ingredients for skin still come from nature:
vitamin C
green tea extract
hyaluronic acid
vitamin A (comes in several forms)
AHAs
licorice (good for hyperpigmentation)
rose hip oil
What do you make of that? Will there ever come a time when science will surpass nature? In other words, will scientists ever create completely artificial (not imitations) ingredients that are superior to the best natural ingredients?
Or, will we continue to rely on natural ingredients for skin care?
Why? |

Hi everyone!
This is my first post and I'd like to share what I use and how I decided to DIY...kind of. I've used some of the best (and most expensive) products. I really like Murad's line for hormonally aging skin. Then I tried a number of Periconne MD products. I actually liked Murad better. But then I had an idea. I was tired of paying a fortune for these products, plus it bothered me that, while they listed the ingredients, they never listed the percentage of each ingredient. So, I had an idea. I'm a physician, so I decided to call a respected compounding pharmacy and have my own products compounded. Even though I was able to order my own products, I'm sure most physicians would be willing to do this for you. So this is what I use. The routine is VERY simple. Essentially, I only use 3 products!!!!! I use one product at night and in the morning, all I use is sun screen! I have two different night time products and I alternate them. One product has Ascorbic Acid 20% (Vitamin C), (I had already built up to this percentage gradually), and Sodium Hyaluronate 1%. The other has Retinol 1%, DMAE Complex 38%, and Sodium Hyaluronate 1%. I alternate them, using the vitamin c serum one night and the retinol serum the next night. Then in the mornings, I just use sunscreen (SkinCeuticals SPF 30). Each of the serums is packaged in an opaque pump dispenser, so neither is exposed to light or oxygen. Each of the serums is 1 oz. Since I'm alternating the serums, the pharmacist felt that each 1 oz pump should last a month. That way the ingredients would always be fresh. Plus, I'm saving a FORTUNE!!!! Each serum cost $35!!!! So, not including the sun screen, which cost $40 and should last 2-3 months, I'm only spending $70 a month for pure, pharmaceutical grade products that have been professionally mixed!!!! I've only been using the regimen for a couple of weeks, but can already see results. As a physician, I have a number of patients that I see on a monthly basis. SEVERAL of them have asked me what I'm doing, because they can tell I'm doing something!!! I've always looked younger than my age, but I just turned 53 and while most people think I'm in my early 40's, now I'm getting late 30's and I've only been using the regimen for a couple of weeks!!! One of the things I've noticed the most is my hands. I was starting to get age spots and my hands look wrinkled unless I keep lotion on them. Now the spots are almost gone and my skin looks great!!! Today I realized that I only used my sunscreen and forgot to add some lotion later in the morning. I was shocked!!!! My hands looked great!!! Still a bit of wrinkling, but an amazing improvement!!!. Anyway, that's my DIY...kind of, approach. I don't have to buy any supplies, the ingredients are high grade and best of all, I don't have to do anything!!! The only thing I've been thinking about adding is a DMAE serum to use in the morning, before putting on my sunscreen (yes, I know I have to wait a while before putting on the sunscreen). I'd really like to know what you guys think!!!

dnilson - Many on EDS have been compounding (DIY) products for years. C-serums are a specialty here on EDS and it many be that many are making them cheaper than you. We have a DIY area in the Forums Index with many recipes. Perhaps you will write yours out and share them. We'd sure appreciate it - I would. Thanks for joining in.

Thanks for your post DNilson. Glad to have more options, as I don't want to DIY and I am tired of paying high prices! I also appreciate that you use the proven ingredients. I have 1 question for you, are you not concerned about DMAE? Thanks again for your refreshing post. |

I wish I could have a doc that would take the time to order a product formulated exactly for me. I brought the idea up to a derm to do this for me once and while they didn't laugh at me, they dismissed the idea completely "no"
I assumed that meant it didn't work that way..interesting. DIY just intimidates me but excess ingredients/fragrances in store bought stuff trigger rosacea in my skin and there'd be lots of formulations I'd like to play around with. |

One of our EDS members (not me) sells products that have good actives at beneficial amounts without the excess ingredients, fragrances, etc. It looks like her company may also do some custom products. Take a look here:

rileygirl,
Why do you suppose that she would be concerned about DMAE? Is it because of drying? |

There has been some controversy about that ingredient. I, personally, try to avoid that now as I just don't really know.
You can read about it here, but you can also google and read up about it.

And you’re seeing the results that you want as well.
It’s ALL a *win-win*, IMO!! |
