I have plenty of EO's and FO's, and seldom use them. For some reason, I'm now wanting to whip them out and experiment a little. I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we could compare *notes* Very Happy

I want to work on a staple scent that I can use for both solid perfume, body butter and lotions. Because I'm drawn to crisp & clean smells, I'm thinking the citrusy notes would have to dominate in whatever I make. What I would really love to get close to duplicating, is the smell of Creme De La Mer. I bought all the EO's that are in the product, but I haven't experimented yet. There's also a 'floral' note in the cream, that I can't put my finger on...(drats.)

If you have favorite blends, ideas or DIY recipes that you love, I'd love to hear all about them. For me, the easiest DIY venture by far has been making solid perfume and solid lotion bars. They make amazing gifts, and are fun and simple to make.

I guess you want advise instead of straight up recipes. But I'm not sure.

I have probably too much experience with essential oils, and I can tell you that bergamot and/or benzoin are very good at "rounding out" scents and bringing all the notes together. You'll probably want to use bergamot in there somewhere because you like citrusy scents. (& Also bergamot can be mistaken for floral-y under certain circumstances.) Citruses can get get bogged down and mucky if you use too many at once, so I always added myrrh to freshen up the mix. I don't know if you'd like it or not. It smells something like cool water if that makes sense.

I'm assuming you already know everything about citrus essential oils being photosensitizing and whatnot?

I've mixed jojoba oil with rose and lavender oil = just a little at a time

I mixed vodka and EOs for a room spray but it didn't seem strong enough. I wanted a cinnamon scent and it came out more "medicinal" smelling.

Often the sites of official perfumes give some idea of the kind of scents that are in it. Important is to know about top notes, middle notes and ground notes, and fixatives to make a 'real' perfume.

Scents can be organised in the same way as music scales. This may sound funny, but it's serious. And you combine notes to make a harmony, a chord, and just like any composer you can make that chord as complex as you choose.
Use google to find lists that assign musical annotations to scent notes. The fixative often used by DIY perfumers is ground orris root. The trickiest part is to keep all notes equally 'loud' for as long as possible - which is quite difficult. You often end up with only the ground notes (patchouli being a notorious one in this respect) remaining and all the middle and top notes gone. In the top notes, tonka is quite a persistent one. Just try out, find out what you like, test it and make your own signature scent. It can be done, and it can be fun.

25 ml Jojoba Oil
5 ml Sandlewood
5 ml Patchouli
2 drops Lemon or Mandarin

I've loved the EO's I purchased at 'soap goods' and 'bulk apothecary' .com

I also purchased quite a few from 'aura cacia', and sadly, have been less than pleased (with all but a few.) For sure, I WOULDN'T recommend their EO blends (i.e. vanilla, sandalwood and a few others.) A rancid oil smell, over powers the subtle real fragrance you are looking for.. Really disappointed in that brand. Even the pure EO's I bought from them -(palmarosa, geranium & neroli)- had a distinctly rancid smell. Not pleasant at all. And I bought them with 2 day shipping, during cool weather, so I can't fault that... Crying or Very sad

Regarding the 'sandalwood', I am very luck to still have 1/2 oz left of my bottle that I purchased 5ish years ago. It's Indian Sandalwood, and the smell is outstanding. It's hard to come by these days, unless you spend a fortune on it.....And then you have to wonder if it's been oiled down by less than honest re sellers... Needless to say, I'm hoarding mine..lol

Just for the hell of it, I thought I'd share this.

When my daughter was here over Thanksgiving I whipped her up a really quick and easy Vit A, C, E + Glutathione Night Cream.

I typically don't scent the products I use personally, but my girl loves subtle scents, and her favorites are rose & jasmine...

Needless to say, I kept 2 ounces for my personal use, and after it has been sitting these 4 or 5 days, the scent has turned into something really impressive... It is light, clean and floral. In fact, I'd say it's barely there.

For what it's worth, or for those who want to give it a try, here's what I used;

To a 6oz volume of cream, I added;

-3 drops rosehip/jasmine fragrance oil (from soap goods)
-3 drops rose fragrance oil (from bulk apothecary)
-4 drops lavender essential oil
-1 drop lemongrass essential oil

As you can see, I went very scant on the fragrance, but I must tell you, after these few days in the jar, it has melded into something light, subtle and really pretty smelling. Clean, subtle and light is how I would describe it.

Anyhoo, hope you will give it a try and see what you think.

I'd love to know all of your scent recipes as well.

I've bought oils in a number of places, but recently I've been usingwww.anandaapothecary.com.

Their oils are therapeutic grade and smell divine.
I use them medicinally as well, so I like to make sure they are from reputable sources and clean.

I bought my last bottle of sandalwood from Mt. Rose Herbs, as they had a decent price for it.
I think it is Australian.

6oz No Brainer A,C,E & Glutathione Cream

3 1/2oz distilled water brought to 120F in a 16oz pyrex glass meausuring cup.

In a separate smaller glass utensil put in;

1 TBS e-wax (or polawax if you like it thick, thick)
1 TBS refined shea butter (you could use the regular if you don't mind the smell)
1/2 TBS evening primrose (or borage) oil

Heat the oil phase till just melted, which should be close to the temp of the water.

You'll need 2 little shot glasses for your active/cool down phase

glass #1 decant 1 TBS water and after it cools just a bit add 1 tsp glutathione, and 1/2 tsp preservative

glass #2 decant 1 TBS of the oils/wax and working quickly, add in the contents of 12 vitamin A gelcaps, 10 vitamin E gelcaps and 1/2 tsp of ascorbyl palmitate (oil soluble vit C)

Using a little stick blender, drizzle the oil phase into the water phase while continually blending (at least 3 minutes.) When the temp is 100 or below you will add the active phases and continue to blend well.. (If you place the cup on your inner arm and it just feels warm, you are good to go and don't need to check the temp. Don't skimp on the blending/mixing. You should spend a good 7 or 8 minutes in total.

Pour into a container before it's completely cooled. It will thicken up as it cools. Don't put any lid on until it's cool.

I scented mine as indicated in my post above, and it's very nice. If you use unrefined shea butter, I'm not sure how best to cover that smell.

Does anyone had success completely eliminating commercial perfumes with EOs?

I would dearly love to do that, but could never find a combination that would smell decent on me.

Keliu - is that what your recipe is, or is it in addition to perfume?

My recipe is a stand alone one. I use no other fragrance.

I've actually started adding some of this mixture to a tub of Vaseline and I think it makes a really nice smelling body moisturiser.

I wonder how it would be in pure aloe. I got a really great deal at A4M on four tubs of aloe (20 varieties in the mix I think they said) - no scent at all and lovely stuff. It seems perfect for an EO blend.

I have been reading through the posts here and trying to collect the tools I need to make the serum and cream recipes posted. Starting with Kassy's first! I couldn't find a cosmetic size stick blender, so purchased a cuisinart stick blender, which is just too big for the batch sizes I am using. I did make the C, F, E Serum with the E-wax with it doubled) and it make the most lotiony serum I have ever used!

Can anyone recommend a quality stick blender that is the appropriate size for mixing serums and cosmetics?
