Bike accident this morning on my way into work and I think the chain thing dragged on my leg. It's a 3 inch gash on my inner calf with the last 1/3 of it kind of deep but not enough for stitches.

My skin scars so easily and this seems like a set up for a biggie. So far I found Neosporin and butterfly bandaids at the office in a little first aid kit. So I took care of it with that so far.

But what else can I do at this stage? And then what should I do when it scabs over? Also, I think there are theories about keeping a wound 'wet' (like with neosporin) vs having it dry out. If my main goal is scar mimization, what might be best?

Freaking out, Michele

Michelec--- definitely keep it "wet." If possible, I would also use something a little more skin-nourishing than plain neosporin, like Brave Soldier's anti-bac ointment or Burt's Bees Dr. Burt's Res-Q ointment. Good luck!

Hey manslayerliz, I've been looking all over the place of the Burt Bee's ointment and it's hard to find. I was all jazzed about it after reading the thread. I find the rash ointment and the serum but not the 'repair ointment'. I was going to look online but this makes me want it sooner.

Thanks, Michele

Michelec,
Once the wound heals, try scars sheets. I think Curad makes some. They're great on new scars, to prevent keloids, and even help smooth out old scars. You put them on the scar for about 12 hrs at a time- usually overnight. My Mom just used them for a scar on her neck from thyroid surgery- her neck looks flawless! Frankly, she doesn't scar bad to begin with, but we're talking no scar!!
Also, make sure you use sunblock for the first few months on your leg, so you don't get hyper or hypo pigmentation there.

Totally second the silicone scar pads. Curad and Neosporin make them and I found them very effective when compared to Mederma and Vit E. You just need to be diligent and keep them on for 6 - 8 weeks after the wound heals. (My thyroidectomy scar was very long and I've had hypertrophic and keloid scars in the past.)

Ok, I'll definitely look into them. Are they just at a regular drugstore?

Anyway, I think mine is way too fresh now. I walked around too much today and then my foot and leg actually felt warm. So I went home and changed the dressing and there was yellowish exudate. So I'm a little worried.

Copper Peptides are proven wound healers and scar reducers. skinbiology.com has a lot of information about scar reduction.

Hope it heals fast!

Yes, I picked mine up at a Rite Aid, but I've seen them in CVS too. My doctor had me wear them 24/7 until they fell off. One pad lasted 48 hrs depending on what I was doing. I wore them for about 4 months. (They're self adhesive.) You might have to secure the pad with some tape. I tried them on an old abdominal scar and gave up after a few days as it is hard to keep it flat.

As a follow up about the thyroid scar, over a year later, the formerly pale, flat scar did start to turn pink and look thicker on one side. The dermo said it was hypertrophic and not keloid scarring and gave me a series of 3 steroid shots and it is now back to normal.
