HI this is a DIY cosmetics issue not skincare. Apologies to the forum if I'm not posting it in the right place.
I recently bought a lipstick mold and some supplies with the idea of making some homemade lippies with my daughter - kind of a school holiday project.
So to practise my technique and learn how to use the mold I took some existing - retail made old lipsticks - cheap dollar store stuff. Melted it in the microware, greased the mold, poured it in and let in set in the fridge for an hour.
I've tried this twice now - first time for an hr second time for 3) and both times the lipsticks are coming out far too soft, almost like a body butter (ie thick cream consistency). Most of the online tutorials I've watched indicate the process only takes 30 mins.....
Given the recipe can't be wrong ie they were an existing lippie, what am I doing wrong. Do they need to set over night? When you melt makeup does it change the consistency? Do I need to add something?
Lipstick making has become a bit of a disaster project and I'm fast loosing creditability with my 8 yr old !! help please.
much appreciated, Sam |

Did you add anything else to the melted lipstick? It does sound odd that it would be softer. There are some places that sell refillable lip gloss tubes that work for softer stuff. Might be an option if you are willing to buy something else for the project.
Look at it this way - If it still doesn't work out, it'll give you a chance to educate your daughter on how to deal with failure and move on, a necessary life skill as well |
