I have booked to get voluma in a few weeks by a top uk doctor who is a senior member of the British association of cosmetic doctors who has previously done my nasolabial lines twice before and my Botox and I have been very happy. Reading up on voluma I saw the horror blindness stories ! I read a lot of doctors use cannulas. And I saw cannulas used a lot on YouTube.I Am so nervous as my doc says he prefers to use a needle as he gets a better result but can use a cannula if I want but finds it a little bit trickier. What should I do ? Ask for cannula as it is safer ?? He has been injecting voluma for several years as it was available in the Uk. I totally trust him but panic over everything ! |

I have been self injecting for years. My preferred method of injection is a cannula for temples, and very vascular areas. I have done the zygomatic arch with a cannula but I prefer to do my cheeks with a needle. The thing about voluma is it is ment to be injected into the cheeks to volumize, the proper needle is supplied with the syringe in the package. Voluma is ment to be injected to bone, not in a dermal sub q plane. Doctors do what doctors want. But I'll bet your doctor who is well trained will inject voluma with a needle using the bolus technique. Now he may inject something else with the voluma, and use a cannula but I'm sure he would tell you if that's the case. I don't mean mix it I mean as an addition. I've never heard of blindness stories, but I guess if injected improperly, and without any knowledge of anatomy that would be possible. But I'm sure your doctor has a thorough knowledge of facial anatomy. |

Would Sculptra be safer and/or easier? I've never heard blindness stories about that or Voluma but have with Restylane injected near the eyes. Maybe just avoid the eye area altogether. |

To inject voluma in the eye area would be to inject it incorrectly. It is not made for that purpose. She made a very good choice, and her doctor sounds excellent. |

Any filler can cause blindness if injected very fast AND in the exact wrong spot. it is hard (rare) to do so many things wrong. If your doctor is a top doc in your area, I wouldn't worry about it.
Cannulas require less pokes with the needle so possibly less bruising. If this guy is good, you should go with what method he prefers. |

B. Physician Instructions
1. JUVÉDERM VOLUMATM XC injectable gel is a crosslinked, robust, injectable gel formulation, injected using a 27G 1⁄2" or 25G 1" needle to volumize and contour the cheek for correction of mid-face volume deficit.
HOW SUPPLIED
JUVÉDERM VOLUMATM XC injectable gel is supplied in individual treatment syringes with needles as indicated on the carton. JUVÉDERM VOLUMATM XC can be injected with either a 27G 1⁄2" or a 25G 1" needle. The volume in each syringe is as stated on the syringe label and on the carton. The contents of the syringe are sterile and non-pyrogenic. Do not resterilize. Do not use if package is open or damaged.
As with all dermal filler procedures, JUVÉDERM VOLUMATM XC should not be used in vascular rich areas. Use in these areas, such as glabella and nose, has resulted in cases of vascular embolization and symptoms consistent with ocular vessel occlusion, such as blindness.
These are some of the instructions and warnings from the company. Your doctor is well versed in this and much more experienced than US doctors in using Voluma. I would continue my confidence in him.
LauraLizzie is correct, ANY filler will cause blindness injected incorrectly in the wrong spot. But you know your Doctor, you have been to him before, he is well versed and knows your facial anatomy. Tell him your fears. Tell him what you have read. I'm sure he will put your fears to rest. |

Thanks guys for your reassurances. I guess he knows what he is doing and I am gonna have to trust him! Just it was a couple of years ago I had my nasolabial lines done and they never came back as bad. So as it's been so long I am just nervous about a filler procedure again. Plus I never read about the blindness thing !!! He is just injecting the cheeks to address a flatness nearer to my nose. I hope this indirectly improves my under eye darkness too plus lift my nasolabial lines a bit too. My doc says he doesn't inject eye troughs not that I would want that. |

Good luck! Just had 3 vials voluma and botox done on Tuesday. Really love the results. Once you start though, it is very addicting! |

I had my first treatment with Voluma about two weeks ago, and it was done with a cannula. Virtually completely painless and just left two little dots where it went in, both of which were pretty much gone within a day or two.
I've had botox before, but because it was my first experience with Voluma I just had 1/2 syringe in each cheek. It's probably just a little TOO subtle, so I've already booked in for the next lot! |
