So this last March I went on a 570 mile road bike trip, traveling from San Fran to LA in less than 2 weeks. I had never done anything like that before, and although very fun, it was very hard on my body and consequently my skin. I seem to have aged quickly since then. My skin has lost some tone, glow and plumpness all in a matter of months. I have also been racing bikes this summer on and off, so I dont feel like I have gotten a true break.

I thought the biking is what has been hard on me and my skin, but I went to a Russian facialist last week and she told me that "oh no, these are just age jumps. Suddenly, every 6-8 years, you will age very quickly, like over a couple months. Then you will hold steady more or less for another 6-8 years. Very common"

Soooo, what?! Shock Are these age jumps a real thing? I guess in retrospect maybe I noticed one around 30 and that is what prompted me to learn about facial exercises and I have held steady more or less since then until now.

I am curious if anyone else has heard or experienced these "age jumps" AND does anyone have suggestions on how to undo some of this jumping? I do facial exercises 3 times a week and massage, exfoliate. I am looking for like herbal or supplement or lifestyle suggestions that make a discernible difference in skin hydration, tone, youthfulness. Stupid age jump. Confused

I think you need a new facialist – what a load of nonsense.

Look what you did on that 570 bike trip, and the training was tone up your body and probably eat into the fat supplies within your body and on your face. This is really where people age rapidly – and they loose the “plumpness” as you call it. I personally experienced this in my 50’s – where I had gained weight over a few years and then finally got off my butt and decided to do something about it, and I lost weight using slimfast. Not the best or most healthiest way but at the time I wanted change and wanted it quickly. So choose that method. Well the major place my weight loss showed was of course in my clothes (which was great) but the side effect was that my face lost all its plumpness, tone and I just looked old and haggered. The fact that you haven’t rested up either and feel like you need a break is where you are overdoing things and so of course your body is going to do and use whatever it has available.

“Age jumps” is just a nonsense concept. You look at anyone moving house, or getting a divorce and usually you will see they seem to age “rapidly” in comparison with those not doing it, because at these times your priorities are different and usually you don’t eat properly, are highly stressed etc. Now if you look at what happened to you around 30 – it is probably a time of stress etc or could just be where your body was changing too. One of the big things I notice with us girls is that our hormones are so easily unbalanced by anything and when they go out of balance for whatever reason it shows on us usually horribly. Men are so darned lucky that they don’t seem to go through the same imbalances and it rarely shows on them.

One of the things I’m thinking is that maybe if your diet wasn’t up to scratch during your training then maybe this could be having an effect. I’m not so sure a herbal supplement or any other supplement will make a major difference, but do think that maybe eating regularly through the day may help here stop the plumpness disappearing.

I believe in age jumps. There is a reason why some women overdo Botox and fillers because at some point in time they feel like they lost their looks over night and now they have to repair everything at once.

It certainly happened to me.

Sure I understand why some women overdo botox but to suggest it is due to age jumps is adding 2 and 2 and coming up with 399. Just doesn’t add up. Sure women who have botox and fillers and keep going with it do so for their own personal reasons and I’m not judging them for choosing that, but simply pointing out that to suggest its due to age jumps is madness.

If age jumps were so prevalent in today’s world then there would be bound to be some scientific evidence about it. Last time I checked there wasn’t anything of the kind. Sure if hormones go unbalanced – like menopause – we see immediate results and feel them in our bodies. That’s not an age jump that’s simply hormones being unbalanced. To suggest that people have age jumps is nothing more than a scare tactic in my mind that won’t help people will simply stress them out.

hmm, maybe hormones are to blame... possibly all this physical stress on my body has knocked them out of balance. Can I test for this at home or is it best to go in somewhere? Or maybe everything will right itself as I take a break from doing anything strenuous this winter...

It seemed interesting to me that she was soooo sure of herself, and she sees women's skin every day and talks to them about their experiences, so it was compelling when she said it.

The age jump idea is interesting to me.

I'm kinda thinking that if we are taking care of ourselves properly (but often life doesn't allow for that) then age jumps wouldn't effect us..at least not so much…but if we are in a stressful situation we are more effected by many things, including age jumps.

I think that some of what you are describing is due to a loss of fat due to a lot of exercising and possibly some sun damage...
The thing that almost immediately starts working for me (up to a certain level) is HA. I would suggest taking a high quality HA and collagen supplement (it is also beneficial for joints).
For sun damage, vitamin C serum.
There are millions of other things and treatments, a lot of them described here, for example red LED (it gives a bit of plumpness quite soon).
I have read here about Vaculifter (increasing circulation), I have just ordered one, will see how that goes.

And slightly off topic, which massages do you do? I am doing Tanaka and Facial Detox for several months now, but I don't really see the cumulative benefit, although I still like how my face looks after so keep doing them...

Where the hell did this come from? Why are you trying to say that I said anything about people who believe in God? All I asked was questions as to proof for these so called age jumps.

Looks to me that you are trying to put words into my mouth to cause a stirring amongst people and its clear for all reading this that you would rather scare others into believing this age jumps stuff.

Jasminerosey - I'm a little surprised that you believe this but seriously do you see evidence of this in the everyday world you live in? We all go through stresses and strains and the idea that you will age rapidly and then stay the same every 6-7 years doesn't add up. Yes through changes like divorce or moving house where we are under a lot of stress I can see how a body would be stressed, but this is highly different than what is being suggested by age jumps.

Jenp I wasn't suggesting hormones were to blame in your case, simply pointing out the age jump theory isn't all conclusive and doesn't equate for things like this. When you do a physical challenge like you did that will eat into your fat stores, like has already been said and that ages almost every woman out there period!

It seems like you are the only one who is scared by those age jumps Very Happy I am certainly not. And women who are taking a good care of their skin would not be scared as well.

I also don't understand why would anyone be against this idea so much. There is absolutely no harm in believing this theory. And not every theory has to be SCIENTIFICALLY proven as some of those theories are not even worthwhile to prove.

I am not scarred by age jumps as I don't believe in them. As I said if they were accurate theory there would be at least some evidence proving it and the fact that you indicate that you believe this to be true you seem unable to provide any evidence that this is so is revealing in and of itself. I see you are now changing your mind that if people look after themselves that this will not happen to them, but this is very different from what you first implied.

Suffice to say if you want to believe in this knock yourself out with it - but don't try scaring others into it with you. Sure people are entitled to their own opinions but when you try scare mongering people into believing your opinion to be factual you are misleading them.

Hi, I'm new but have been lurking on these forums for years.

I kinda understand what you mean by age jumps, however I think what is really happening is that the cumulative effect of minor signs of aging all combine and finally becomes noticeable which makes you feel like you've aged overnight.

I know, because this also happened to me around the 31 year mark. That is also when I started lurking these boards lol. Although I have not experienced another major "jump", I can still see very minor signs of aging happening which I am hoping to combat with more serious treatment, hence me posting.

Hopefully I will start aging backwards soon with the help of you lovely people! Smile

sounds like you have runners face. google that.. i notice all the time women who do extreme exercise have fit bodies and gaunt wrinkled faces.

Perhaps all the fat burning and stress..

I know a cyclist who is addicted to the sport.. so if you are.. you might have to accept the fact.

However.. I'm sure if it just happend you can reverse it by eating healthy fats…and not doing marathon type exercise.

All this arguing over this topic, lol.

There are many theories with aging, who knows who is right, and what really makes sense.

I know me personally, I sort of have the age jump thing. I looked the same from like 13-20, then from 21-27 or so, then sort of took on a different look at 28, started maturing and then again around 35 I changed a bit, so to be honest I sort of see it as being true in a sense, at least to me.

Everyone ages different, and these age jumps in my experience weren't overnight changing, but I guess my face has gone through different stages every 7 years or so..and these changes weren't necessarily "aging" more like morphing slightly, maturing.

Aging is an interesting thing.

well to me its like most things, if people believe age jumps to be true then they will create them within their body and faces. I always look at suggestions like this and then see if it is true for everyone. Usually what occurs is that I find more exceptions to the rule on first glance, and we can all identify people who have lived without age jumps. More power to people and their thoughts, but with age jumps it is one of those dreaded curses by the sound of it - that you will be subjected to and nothing can be done against from what I'm reading.

The way I see it, is that this is a theory of aging..rather than slowly aging bit by bit every day or year, we stay the same for about 7 years and then experience some aging.

This theory is not saying, imo, that we have to 'succumb' to these age jumps or that stress factors, etc are not also involved in creating more 'aging' when the jump occurs. It's just saying that aging (if we were to do nothing about it) occurs in jumps rather than little by little every day..and personally this makes sense to me.

Okay its been some time ago but I seem to recall reading somewhere that every seven years all the cells in our bodies are replaced by newer cells. That seems to stick in my memory (except the exception I believe was the white of eyes). So with this age jumps theory that could use this as evidence to support it or argue it. Either way I think if someone believes this to be true then they would and could easily create this for themselves. Likewise if someone disbelieves it then they would also collect evidence for it too.

I suppose to some extent we are playing a game of chinese whispers as we don't now the full extent of the facialists conversation here, as if people are able to do anything to prevent age jumps etc. Likewise I wonder if she had ideas of how to avoid them or utilise them i some way shape or form too?

This has been really interesting to read. Thank you everyone for your comments. I have heard of runner's face, and maybe that is what occurred for me; however, I don't usually train or ride those extreme distances. I have gained all the weight back that I lost of that trip-- it's just that I can't get my NL to go away with massage and exercise (like I've been doing for the last 6 years successfully) and there seems to be a general reduction in cheek volume and consequently droop in my face as well, so that make the orbital area look weird and the cheeks look old. Seriously, I have been back doing facial exercises regularly for 2.5 months straight now, but no real changes in those above issues. (One positive I noticed was a smoothing out of my forehead, but that isn't as aging as the eye/cheek/NL issues).

maggie-I am looking for a high quality HA and collagen supp today. Thanks for that suggestion.

As for the debate on age jumps. I noticed NL lines and very minor cheek volume stuff first 6 years ago. I figured out what worked for me to deal (facial exercise and vigorous massage), and then I literally held steady for the last 6 years (other than fine line/dehydration/tone/pigmentation minor issues that popped up here and there), which is pretty great. Now I am back in the "What the heck do I do about this??" stage hoping to figure out what works again for a while!! So although aging for me hasn't occured ONLY in jumps, it seems my "crisis" moments have been at intervals...which is either orchestrated on a cellular level OR coincidence that my life events lined up....But I will add that I went through the birth of a baby, an emotionally abusive relations, break-up of said relationship, multiple major moves (across states and country) and starting a new job ALL in those last 6 years and only after that big bike ride this spring did I actually feel anything negatively, drastically affected my looks.

To the OP.. You lost fat in your face from the brutal bike ride - plain and simple. I bet you lost fat in other parts of your body as well. Just because you gained the weight back does not mean that any of it would go back to your face. I lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time and when I regained it sadly none went to my face. No amount of facial exercises is going to replace the fat.

Age jumps really Confused Is Theresa Mary the only one who makes any sense on this thread?

I really don't think I lost a lot of facial fat. Mainly a loss of tone and a loss of my skin's ability to spring back/respond to massage-- elasticity I think it is.

Perhaps merely the result of anyone's imbalanced and fluctuating level of cortisol (a hormone the body produces when under stress).

If you are doing intense training of any sort then you will lose fat period – whether from your face or body. Likewise when you lose fat you also lose the collagen and elastin too which is why after rapid weightloss you read so many people with issues about their skin not springing back. Sadly most tend to try to regain fat back and do so by eating unhealthy but they seem to not build the fat back where they lost it probably because their bodies store it in a different place for fear of it being needed again. I don’t understand all the science behind it but it’s the simplified version that has been explained to me that makes sense. Some time after rapid weight loss the body takes a few months to readjust and shrinkwrap back. So maybe you need more time also but I too think that the intense training you did is partly the reason for your results.

That sounds really bizarre to me... But Russians are superstitious like that (I'll ask my mom if she believes this Wink. Speaking of my mom, she hasn't had any time jumps and looks in her mid thirties and is in her 50s. I wish I could blame her meticulous skincare routine but she only started using stuff (including sunscreen!) in the last 5 years...

She's a super new-agey person who doesn't stress about things and if she does, she'll have a good cry and get over it. My grandma is high-strung so I wouldn't say she's won the genetic lottery or anything! (Lucky for me, I got acneic skin from my dad. Thanks a lot...)

Maybe by obsessing/ stressing over this you're causing more trauma to your body and skin. Keep doing the things you love and stick to a skincare routine that works for you. Wink
