So, I obviously use sun blocker to keep my skin healthy and youthfull, but it obviously results in pasty white skin. So for summer I'd like to use a self tanner to get a bit of colour.
So, is self tanner bad for your skin? How best to use it to keep your skin healthy? Do I have to consider anything while using Retin A? PH or something?
Thank you! |

I don't think it is...unless you ingest or inhale gigantic amounts of DHA..
But I do think it can be problematic when most of us are doing all sorts of things to induce cell turnover and skin exfoliation and peels to get rid of what we're looking at in the mirror. It's almost like a test to see how well we're doing.
I'm with you though..I don't care how trendy pale, pale skin may be the truth is pasty white just isn't as aesthetically pleasing for many as a bit of color..
I have been trying it on my body..I haven't yet progressed to my face but I am going to give it a try.
I do have a little hyper-pigmentation that I've just gotten rid of and I certainly don't want to revive that. I'll proceed cautiously. |

I am pale and the sunscreen doesn't help with daytime appearance of pale skin.
I have tried Clarins facial tanner. It's ok. I find sometimes tanner can make your face look a little older. Maybe that's just me.
Any rec's for good facial tanners? Light healthy glow is my goal |

Personally, I like white skin, especially when it is flawless (not mine). To me there its beautiful and youthful. |

Hi RMN; Some self tanner have bad ingredients that can effect your hormones. Look for a self tanner that is DHA-Free and organic or plants base. |

Old thread but ALL sunless tanners are bad news, very sadly! I researched this heavily keen to find something that would be safe but, alas, nothing truly is. The self tanners which claim they don't contain DHA contain Erythrulose which effectively causes the same issues. Both these chemicals cause free radical production in the skin which, needless to say, is exactly what we are trying to avoid!

I did find a body oil product from Mad Flowers which gives you a glow via henna. Actually a wonderful idea but, alas, that failed for me on the safety front too as it contains a phototoxic essential oil too high up in the ingredient list to make me trust it.
On this front, however, I don't know why there aren't any other tanners which contain henna to produce the colour? There is a big hole in the market for that one! Of course you could use henna yourself at home but its a very messy procedure and I rather like being able to buy products rather than DIY. Some people use black tea and coffee to get a bit of colour too (that's what ladies used to do in the old days during the war when nylon was scarce and they couldn't get stockings!) but again a bit messy!
The best bet for getting colour on the face is a good mineral makeup with a safe ingredient profile. I use Omania loose over my sunscreen and freaking love it! It only contains Zinc oxide, rice powder, Kaolin and Iron oxides with no nano particles. The beauty of this is not only a nice finish/colour (I use their darker powders as bronzer) but the zinc oxide doubles up as an extra layer of protection over your sunscreen.
