So I've been using Retin A 0.05% for 3-4 months now and am through the worst of the skin peeling. I've notice a vast improvement in my acne and the general texture of my skin. I've got a lot more of a fresher complexion and it appears smoother with smaller pores. There is still occasional peeling but this is much less than it was at first. I'd like to really be making the most of my anti-ageing regime and wanted to add in an AHA/BHA exfoliant but keep reading mixed opinions on this, so thought I'd post here to see what the general consensus was. My current regime is this :
AM
Generic Vitamin E facial wash (Muslin cloth application)
Mad Hippy Vitamin C serum
Trilogy Rosehip Oil
Nivea facial SPF
PM
Generic Vitamin E facial wash (Muslin cloth application)
Wait 30 mins
Retin A 0.05%
Twice a week I use a deep hydrating mask by Lavera that leaves my skin feeling very soft.
I have combination skin, which has always been very oily in my T-zone, something that hasn't been made worse/better since starting the Retin A. The skin under my eyes has become dryer, noticably so when I use concealer to cover my dark circles. I've tried paying extra attention to moisturising this area and don't apply the retin A there but wondered what else might help - it looks terribly ageing.
Any hints/tips for adding in any extra products would be much appreciated. Should probably add that I'm 30, have recently lost a significant amount of weight and have a couple of pesky stress lines in the middle of my forehead that I wish would vanish but hey, that's life I guess! |

My dermatologist told me to start incorporating Glycolic Acid in my morning regime 3 weeks after starting Retin-A. I've been doing this for almost 20 years and I couldn't be happier with my skin.
Other than that, I think you are doing everything you should be! |

I just signed up yesterday. I hope I am asking my question in the appropriate place. I started using Retin A exactly two weeks ago, yesterday. The first week was very ok but I noticed some shiny patches which dissipated a few days after. However. by the second week my skin seem to have a coating of scaliness or rashiness on the cheek area. I would use ACV mixed with glycerin and rosewater both morning and evening. In the evening I would wash off the ACV before applying my Retin A. I would leave for an hour then apply Ambi fade cream with Alpha hydroxy acid. Today I have decided to stop using the ACV and Ambi as I feel these products may have contributed to the coating of scaliness/rashiness. I am hoping for a successful Retin A experience so I am trying my utmost to eliminate anything that may interfere with its progress. Any advice on how I should be using Retin A and what may have caused the 'coating' and how to remove same will be appreciated |

You are not done with the peeling yet – believe me. The peeling comes and goes – I should know as I’ve been using it for 30 years, and no two people are alike. Some get it early some get it a few years down the line so don’t be so it could easily start up again. However until you have been using it a year you haven’t seen the full benefits. If you look at pubmed – the majority of studies were done with nightly use over the course of a year (minimum). So 3-4 months is still baby years by all accounts.
I would use an exfoliator but rather than a chemical AHA or Glycolic one – opt for dry skin brushing as this not only increases the circulation, removes dead skin cells but also helps your skin to stay toned too. |

When you say you started it two weeks ago – what precisely did you mean and what strength were you using? You see many people say things like this but forget to share details – were you using it every day/night, or every other day. What strength did you start out with?
It could be a reaction depending on what you were using gel/micro gel and/or cream too.
It may also be a reaction where you needed to exfoliate too – hard to know with such little information.

Theresa Mary forgive me for being so vague. Two weeks ago I started using Retin A at nights only. I exfoliate with a salux cloth twice per day everyday. I do not like to pack my face with too many products because I always tend to have an adverse reaction. In the day time I use the Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with glycerim amd Rose Water as a toner then I apply Ambi fade cream and Banana Boat sunscreen. At nights I have been using the ACV then I would wash it off after an hour and then apply the Retin A which I would follow up with the Ambi fade cream after an hour. I have since limited my exfoliation and stopped the ACV and Ambi at nights. I have also considerably lessened the amount of Retin A I apply to my face, less than a pea size now..every night. The coating is still there. There is a demarcation on my cheeks. I am hoping that the steps I have taken will revert the skin back to mormal |

Okay great. 0.5% is a good strength to start with but it may have been too much applying it every night. Most people ease into it by applying every other night.
Your skin can and will revert but it needs time to do so. At least 6 weeks for sure. The ACV may also have caused a reaction like this too - as it is acidic by nature.
Rather than stopping exfoliation completely, you may want to do it once or twice a week to encourage the face to return to its former status too.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and to give some advice. I think the coating is subsiding. It is still there but the 'ring' is smaller. I will surely keep you updated, and if you have any more tips on how to keep my skin clear please do not hesitate to enlighten me. |

Thank you Theresa Mary for your advice. Thank you also to everyone else who would have unwittingly helped through their posts. My skin is doing so much better now,no coating, no rash I am just looking forward to some really good results. This is my third week. I have some hyper-pigmentation on my cheeks and I am desirous of this lightening to the point where I do not find it necessary to wear foundation. I am thinking about adding Hydroquinone to my regimen. I read that it can boost the Retin A. I hope it works....Any thoughts? |

I find it necessary to ask this question. I have been using Retin A for three weeks and a day. Yes I did experience some adverse effects which have since subsided. However, one thing I have never done is peeled or shed any skin...visibly at least. Is that normal? I kind of wanted to peel so that I knew it was working. |
