I'm wondering if I should keep using my dermalogica products while I'm on medication prescribed by my dermatologist?? I've been using this whole line of products since January, Anti-Bac Skin Wash, Daily Microfoliant, Multi-Active Toner, Active Moist, and Medicated Clearing Gel. These were the specific products listed in an acne pamphlet that I picked up. It's been over 2 months.. they are helping a bit, but not very much. I still get bad pimples everywhere. I just saw my dermatologist and he put me on a prescription, Tazorac gel and Minocycline pills. Now, I'm wondering if I should keep using my dermalogica products while I'm on the meds, or drop it. They don't seem to be helping much..but then I just read that it's more for keeping skin healthy than fighting acne. I asked my dermatologist but, he couldn't give me an answer because he doesn't know what is in the products. I'm thinking maybe I should stop using the Medicated Clearing Gel, but keep using the cleansers and everything else. Does this sound like a good idea? I just don't want anything to conflict with the medication I'm starting. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks |

Products that contain benzoyl peroxide shouldn't be used at the same time as Tazorac. So you can use BP products in the morning if you wish, that's fine.
Salicylic acid products "shouldn't" be used, because of they may potentially increase irritation. I considering it to be unnecessary if you're using retinoids anyway.
Anti Bac Cleanser has Triclosan and aside from it being possibly too harsh for your skin once you start Taz, it's still fine to use.
Your Rx's are going to do more (or at the very least have the potential to do much more) than those products ever will.
Re: Minocycline - A little dizzyness is expected...especially if you stand up too quickly or something similar. Don't take it with any dairy products. 1 hour before or after. Take vitamins 2 hours before or after, to be safe. I was on 100mg's daily, and it did help with my cystic acne but I relapsed very quickly and ended up going on Accutane.
Good luck! |

Thanks! So, is the Clearing Gel the only product with BP and Salicylic Acid? I guess I can keep doing the Cleanser/Microfoliant/Toner/Active Moist thing in the morning, and scrap the Clearing Gel. The doc says to use Tazorac gel daily, but the pharmacist said to start every other day to check for reactions..then switch to daily when comfortable. |

Yeah, I'd probably stop the Medicated Clearing Gel. It's 2% SA, which might be irritating when used w/ Tazorac, and IMO it's really unnecessary. The Taz will be doing much more.
Using Taz every other day should be fine, but I'm guessing you'll get red and dry either way.
If you notice more irritation/dryness, or whatever just simplify your routine even more. |

Thanks for all the advice Dalguy. I used the Taz gel 2 days in a row... I figured I'd be fine, didn't think my skin was too sensitive.. but today I have peeling on my face! Also, when I use the Anti-Bac Cleanser, I notice it stings a lot more. The Multi Active Toner really stings when I spray it on too. Is it the Taz gel that is making my skin peel? Should I switch to every other day? Or stop using the Cleanser? Also, I've been using Active Moist and letting it dry before putting on Tazorac at night... thought it might help reduce any dryness. Is this okay? I hope it doesn't affect it. Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I'm doing this properly. |
