I was treated to an "age defying facial" yesterday for the big 4-2 birthday (I left there looking 24!!! - yes, that is a lie, but I felt good!) and the estetician told me that she had gone to some kind of conference where she was told the rule of thumb for water intake is to take your weight and divide it by three - that's how many ounces you should have per day. Anything else is just gravy. So for example if you weighed 120, you should have five 8 oz. glass a day - or 40 oz.

If this is so, it's somewhat good news for me as I'm lucky if I get in two to three glasses a day, and that includes drinks like Crystal Lite, and Green Tea. I have been buying those little Crytal Lite packets that you add to bottled water to make them flavors which helps me get the intake I should have w/o the calories. They're good when you're on the go.

Thanks Mabsy....It was a very nice birthday - went out for dinner w/ hubby and offspring, then we went bowling which was fun!

And might I add that the example weight used was one of epic dream proportions for me Laughing

hi Maria!

I have always drank alot of water! I keep a big water bottle at work and fill it constantly. Unfortunately I still get dehydration but think it is due to amino acid issue. So I don't think drinking alot of water is the only thing that helps but it doesn't hurt! Wink

I hate drinking water straight-up. I don't know why. I have to force myself to glug it down. I see those people with their porta water bottles and wish I could be that way and drink all day long...oh well...I do my best!

I am an Acupuncturist and the best thing I can get my patients to do is to drink water!! By the way only water is water...green tea or Crystal Light will not count as your water...so no cheating. Adding lemon is ok for most people, but not everyone. I do a lot of organic skin care and I do non-surgical facial rejuvenation using colored lights and microcurrent and the patients who get the best results hands down are the ones drinking about 1.5 to 2 quarts of water a day. So be disclipined in your water intake...it's worth it!!

Hi all, I hate to be a poop-head, but liquid is liquid and if there is no caffeine in the beverage to dehydrate, then you can drink just about anything snd have it count as liquid. Also, from the research I have read, the amount of water you drink has very little to do with your skin's hydration (unless you are not drinking anything). Most people get enough liquid from a variety of sources, veggies, fruits, juice, green or herb tea, etc.
Perhaps I'm writing this because I hate water, but I really do believe (and it seems to be backed by science) that water is overrated!

I have studied Chinese Medicine since 1998 and am a liscenced Acupuncturist. According to thousands of years of observation and research only water is water. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) says that foods and liquids have a specific energy to them. For example, cucumber is cold energy, cinnamon is hot energy, and water is neutral. We tend to rarely eat a diet that is balanced in the proper nutrients and energy. We are made up of a large percentage of water...not green tea (cold energy), or crystal light...but water. My experience with getting my patients to drink the proper amounts of actual water has been so great. For myself if I am feeling like a bug is coming on I down the water,and this alone kicks it out. If I am feeling a headace coming on I down the water...no headache. You get the picture. I preach water only because I love to see people feeling better, better skin, better immune system ect. Again this is based on my experience, the experience of my teachers (who some have 25 years of experience in TCM), and the experience of millions of people who have used TCM for thousands of years. Also another piece of info on water you might want to see is a book called "The Message From Water". Just do a google search under that term. So no...you cannot get enough water just in the foods you eat and in the soft drinks, teas, ect...but each to her own. Happy drinking!!

I truly respect your knowledge and your opinion, but I believe each person is unique and has to listen to their bodies. Water actually makes me sick. I may be extreme, but I come from a family of non-water drinkers. I think a lot of what we eat and drink not only has a physical effect on us, but a mental effect. It is said that it you do not enjoy exercising, that it will not do as much good for your health than if you do enjoy it. I think the same is true for foods and drink. I'm happy when I drink cranberry juice, so I'm going to keep drinking it. I have a soulful connection to crusty Italian bread, so I will not be going on a low carb diet in this lifetime. I take much from my Italian grandmother. She loves her dry, red Italian wine. Of course it makes her thirsty, so she then drinks...beer!!! She is 101 years old and still lives in her own home. I'm sticking with grandma's medicine! best, joani

First of all, Happy Birthday Maria!!! I wish I were 42 again!!!

Now, about water intake, I read in the NYT fairly recently that the water issue MUST take into account how active a person is. The article stated that athletically-inclined people CAN overdo water, which flushes salt out of the system and can cause an electrolyte imbalance, in the very least. It also stated that other beverages than water help hydrate, even ones with some caffeine! And of course foods also provide hydration. This may seem revisionistic to some, but the purpose was to correct the conventional wisdom, which has always been very difficult for most people to comply with. The article was in the Tuesday health section, written by Jane Brody (who is kind of a jock herself).

I really should drink more water than I do, but this article gave me a good excuse to rationalize my intake Wink Wink Wink

BTW Joani, my Italian mother (90 years old), only drinks water when she takes a pill. She loves lemon/lime carbonated beverages, coffee, and a glass of wine each day. Maybe these old Italian gals know more than we do!!!

I have been told something similar about water intake. I go to a naturopathic doctor, and he says to take your body weight (in pounds), divide that number in half, and then drink that many ounces of water a day.
I can't drink that much, but I do drink a lot. WHat Yin said is true about only drinking pure water. Tea or soda doesn't count. Too bad wine doesn't count! Laughing

I've also been told that herbal tea (say peppermint) doesn't count. I can't quite figure out why though. What do you reckon?

I've been scratching my head thinking of that too Mabsy, and I certainly don't want or mean to direspect the views here on the forum as these people have waayyyy more knowledge in these areas than I.

But if I have my 16 oz. bottle of water - then I add a packet of flavor and drink the whole thing - why isn't that water intake anymore? Didn't I just drink 16 oz. of water? So confused. Embarassed

Now the three Cosmopolitans I had at dinner last night.....(head is not thanking me right now, but these little martinis were yummy and went down like......water!!!) I'm sure that doesn't count towards water intake!

This is interesting. Didn't realise you could overdo it. I don't think I've ever met anyone who drinks more water than me. It's like a compulsion and no other drink satisfies me. If I can't spend all day drinking water I get really bad tempered, but I catch every cold on earth and spend most of my time feeling really washed out. I'm not an athlete but my days are overactive. What is an electrolyte imbalance? I'll look it up.

Just wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIA!!! Glad you had such a wonderful facial.

This is what I've read, God knows were but,

Take your weight and divide by 2, convert that number to ounces and drink non-caffeinated beverages that preferably are low in sugar.

Alcohol doesnt count, obviously, this DEPLETES your body of water. Other beverages such as decaf green tea, craneberry juice do count as fluid. And yes I too heard that you can drink TOO MUCH water. This tends to flush out not only toxins but essential minerals (think electrolytes) as well. Any means of excretion, perspiration, urinating removes toxins from the body. Water in, water out.

Athelets need more fluid/water..for obvious reasons. Bottom line, drink more fluid/water and if you still don't feel better--try an alternate way--within reason of course. Great to hear so many people's views/inputs!

I guess I should explain that the NYT article I referred to was cautionary. Have you ever heard of basic training recruits or amateur athletes dropping dead? This is because their salt levels have become dangerously low, presumably from excess perspiration and lack of some sort of sodium supplement. If, on top of this, there's too much plain water intake (which flushes even more salt out of the system), death can result. That's why there are special sports drinks for athletes. I hope this clarifies things a little. I'm not smart enough to explain the biology of this phenomenon, sorry!!!

Awwww......big hugs back everyone for sending the birthday wishes.....

It was a very nice weekend. Cured my Cosmo headache today with a nice cold Corona (er, it was actually a Corona lite) with lime!!! lol! Hair of the dog, as they say....It was so beautiful here today in New England - a nice cold beer really hit the spot! Truth be told, right after it, I had a nice, big glass of plain ol' H20 with lemon! I'm trying, truly I am!!!!
