Has anybody had this done at a spa? I want to remove some broken vessels on the side of my nose and face. I looked at the medical lit and it seems that IPL is the best route. My local spa does 4 rounds of IPL with dermabrasion in between. Is this normal? Are there different kinds of microdermabrasion and can they cause scarring? Also we are heading into summer. I probably want to do a few sessions now and then wait until September (I'm a beach person and I read you shouldn't be out in the sun after IPL). I know many of you are in the business from your posts so would appreciate any advice. Also , what is a reasonable price? |

If you are talking about treating the small, red, broken capillaries, I really don't recommend an IPL. Actually, I don't recommend IPL for anything. I just don't like them and don't find them very effective.
Regardless though, I wouldn't use Micro to treat the capillaries. A condition that is also called telangectasia or couperose. Micro is a manual exfoliation that uses a vacuum to penetrate to the cellular level, which results in cell renewal. It is a great procedure that gets good results over the long term. But, the vacuum would actually worsen the couperose, not help it. You would actually increase the blood flow and that is not something that would help your condition.
We treat spider veins with a system called the VascuTouch. It uses Radio Frequency and Direct Current to coagulate the vessel. Basically, we clot the blood and stop the flow to the surface of the skin. And this is done without breaking the epidermal layer. There are other systems available, one called the VascuLyse. You should be able to find someone in your area utilizing one of these Tx methods. That is the route I would personally take. |

I've had SEVERAL ipls...I would actually like to find something more effective at Completely getting ready of small broken capillaries i have...The spa i go to wanted to throw in some microdermobrasion sessions for an extra 200, but common sense hit me and i realized that it would probably do more damage to my skin then not (more broken vessels, redness). He did actually do it on my skin once, and my whole entired face turned red like a tomatoe. i felt horrible and irritated and though my skin felt a lot smoother..all i kept thinking was that i was spending money to try to get rid of redness..and he was making it worse! |

purpleturtle,
You are very wise to listen to your "common sense." microdermobrasion is the worst thing you can do when you have broken capillaries. About 5 years ago I had IPL for my capillaries and it was totally successful. Some have started to come back. Even after my capillaries were gone I was advised by my facialist never to have microdermobrasion on my skin type. I would love to use all the new micro products but I just can't. I stick with Dr. H.'s cleansing cream which seems to work well for me. Skin with a tendency for BC's needs to be treated very gently. The VascuTouch sounds very interesting.
