The other day as I was leaving my dermatologist's office (in a medical center) I stopped by the aesthetic dermatology section. I wanted to know more about the skinceuticals toner but the tech I was talking to told me they didn't carry it (but they carry most other skinceut products)... and that you don't need a toner unless you really need to remove residual makeup and such and also if you want to firm up your skin before applying makeup.
SO do you need a toner or not? Doesn't it help decongest the skin? Or should your cleanser do that?
Thanks!

I personally have never felt the need to use a toner - just one more step I can live without. A nice facial cleanser such as Decleor Huile Demaquillante Cleansing Oil or my favorite, Yonka Gel Nettoyant Cleansing Gel should suffice. |

Never use a toner now either. I use a microfibre cloth to remove every last bit of make up after using Liz Earles cleanse and polish |

I use a Toner just at night after cleansing my face, to take off any residual makeup, and the cotton ball usually comes up with some slight residue. But, in the morning I don't feel a need to use a Toner again, just cleanse. |

I personally find toners to be completely unnecessary. |

I never used to use a toner - I just used to think they were a gimmick to get people to spend more money. That was until I got one of those Dr Hauschka introductory kits for oily skin and I have used a toner ever since. I really notice rthe difference, my pores are nowhere near as big now. For me a toner closes my pores after cleansing, in the morning it is a great base for my day oil and great on its own at night.
My mother-in-law on the other hand doesn't bother with a toner, when she was younger she used to use Rose water.
I think everyone knows their own skin and what suits them best. |

I agree with Rosebud, the Dr Hauschka clarifying toner works great with me. My skin feels refreshed, calmed and conditioned. However if you have sensitive or non-problematic skin, you probably wouldn't need to use a toner at all. I feel like it's an added perk to my skin routine. |

I think toners are a personal preference but agree with rosebud that if you have oily skin or problem skin a toner can really help.
I have always used a toner even though I can have sensitive skin and feels it does make a difference and improves my skin texture.
I always recommend alcohol free toners though because some toners with alcohol can be harsh on the skin I have found from personal experience ! |

I find that my skin does much better without a toner. I found the ones with alcohol/witch hazel in them too drying (like I had stripped my skin of its natural protection) and the non-alcohol ones to leave a slight film on my skin. So, I stopped using them and my skin is no worse for it. But my wallet is a bit better. |

I don't use toners. They either give me pimples or dry me out and turn me red. yuck..no thanks.
I think they're good for people who use cream cleansers b/c it gets the rest of the junk outta your skin. i dunno, maybe i'm completely wrong here... |

It's true- you know your own skin and what it likes. I haven't figured out if mine has a preference for toner or not. I am going to try going with out for a few weeks and see. My Mom said that they only thing she could every use on her face at my age was plain soap. She tried Noxema (yuck! I am sure it hasn't changed since then) and a toner but she said both just made her break out so she stuck with good 'ole soap. Of course, this is when they didn't have many options for facial cleansers and the toner probably had alcohol and other bad ingredients. She said all her friends used the noxema without problems.
Rosebud: how do you like Dr. H day oil since you have oily skin? While at the health food store the other day, I was looking at it and put some onto the back of my hand and it seemed that while the oil soaked in and wasn't greasy, it made my skin shinny. Do you find the same thing with your face? Or does the shine go away under makeup and powder?
Thanks |

Not Rosebud but I've used the sample Day Oil that came with my CC plus the Decleor Ylang-ylang before makeup and unless I apply too much, they both just sink in! I'm amazed They do seem to keep my oily complexion in check and I think I'm seeing success with my clogged pore condition, too.
I went so many years just washing and moisturizing, I think my skin is very thankful for whatever I give it! |

Just chiming in....
I too believe it is a personal preferance. Over the years I've heard both ya's and na's in regards to toner use. Some people believe it helps bring the skin back to it's normal Ph while also removing residual makeup. To me if you use a good cleanser than there is no "residual makeup" left on the skin. As for proper Ph...I dunno. Others believe, as mentioned above, that toners don't "do anything". What is nice about some toners nowadays, is that they actually are made with some very nice active ingredients, i.e. salicytic acid (BHA). This is great for those who have oily/acne skin. Other toners incorporate "skin soothers" such as chamomile or rose. For me I have always used a toner at night after cleansing--just because I like too. I never use a toner with SD alcohol or even witch hazel because these ingredients upset my skin type (dry/reactive). Hope this helps! |

Hi amnis - I am fully converted since I started using the day oil, if it wasn't for the tester kit I would not even have considered it.
It is great on my oily skin - it sinks in then just seems to regulate oil production for the rest of the day, I find I only need to use a tiny bit. I would recomend using a toner underneeth even if it is a mild one like rose water.
This stuff does not make my skin shiny providing I use a toner beforehand - I just aquire a healthy glow, if your skin is prety clear then the Dr H bronzer really compliments it.
The only negative I have is that if you want to put your make-up on then you do need to wait about 20 mins before applying.
But do go and try this - you won't go back to moisturiser |
