You are planning on giving us more info on what type of product you're looking for and what skin type you have... right? |

I'm sorry, am new to this. i have severe fibromyalgia and on 14 different drugs both have had awful effect on my skin. 2 different times, female stranger at store thought my 2 teenagers were my grandchildren(i'm only 51 and hide the grey)! thought i'd best clean up my act. skin is very dry and started (spent a ton on Elizabeth Arden, not knowing much of what is out here). its okay, but still many problems; then i found this site and thought of all my wasted few money! EDS is like a problem skin gold mind how do you choose which company to go with and then, i'm not wealthy, which products best suit my problems Arden has helped correct dry skin, but still large pores, wrinkles, and worse place is eye orbit (dry, wrinkled, dark reddish yellow),sensitive eyes & skin, my skin all over deep yellow though i'm caucasion & reddness on face is rosacia(ms). i can't afford to buy new basic facial care(cleanser, toner, moisturizer) until i use up what i have. can afford to supplement.
can anyone help me, please. |

I'm sorry - I was educating myself on your condition I always think that the best thing to do with any skin complaints is first treat from the inside out. It sounds as though the 14 drugs that you are on are probably depleating some of the nuitrients out of of your body and then this may be having an adverse effect on your skin. Beauty products only ever make skin conditions more managable.
I would advise to use beauty products that only have basic pure ingredients and to keep your skin care regime as simple as possible.
Try the Weleda skin care range - this is more affordable than say the Dr Hauscka:
www.weleda.co.uk
Also have a look at making up your own skincare, using oils, there is a thread on this forum with lots of recipes. I use Jojoba oil as a daily moisturiser on my oily skin and make up my own toner.
Supplementing with fish oils, Zinc and B Vitamins would probably help as well - I think the site I put above had some information on essential nuitrition that you would need.
I really do not know too much about your condition, but good luck and if I come across anything else I will let you know. |

Go for the Mineral make-up lots to choose from: Jane Iredale, Bare Escentuals, Glominerals there are tons more - my brain has just left me!!!!
I know there is a brand you can buy at the chemists/pharmacy in the states where it is only $10 for the base foundation - I can't remember the brand - I'll have a scout round and see if I can find what it is called
If you click onto the essential day spa shopping, go to Jane Iredale and the information section on her products, it will explain more about mineral make-up |

I think it might be called Physicians Formula - the liquid minerals is a dead ringer for Jane Iredale. |

Hi aleetakline, (SORRY THIS IS SO LONG!)
My mom also has Fibromyalgia in addition to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Poly Neuropathy and spinal cord nerve damage (She's in an incredible amount pain needless to say). Anyway, she is 57 and is also on something like 13-14 meds and it unfortunately does a number on the body. She also has skin problems and really has found over the years that products with natural ingredients containing plant extracts and essential oils are the best. Rosebud is right- the simpler the better. The good thing about using products like this is that you receive aromatherapeutic benefits as well. My mom loves soothing scents... it helps distract her from her pain.
And get this. Everyone tells her how young she looks (she's 57) and the average number people guess is 49. NO LIE. And I am with her when people make their comments and I am 100% certain they are sincere. Hey, I think she looks 48/49 so you can trust me! 80% of the time she doesn't have the energy to put on foundation so she will just sweep powder over her face and then apply rouge. So she's not hiding behind foundation. If she died her salt and pepper hair she would look 46 but she isn't able to get out that much. (When I get out of school and can afford it I want to pay a beutician to visit her house every month because she loves having her hair done) Oh, and this is kind of interesting. My aunt is 5 years younger than my mom and EVERYONE guesses that her sister is the oldest. But my aunt is an outdoorsy kind of person and loves to be out on her horse in her free time. So she has had a lot more sun exposure.
However, other than my mom's face (which does have some hyperpigmentation) her skin really shows she's on meds. I think part of it is that she doesn't have enough energy (and money) to treat her entire body every day... it's hard enough just caring for her face!
Also, AVOID THE SUN. This makes an incredible difference with my mom's skin's reactivity. When she does go out she always wears a sunhat and during the warm months she wears a loose fitting long sleeve linen or cotton button up shirt over a tank top. And it is worth it to invest in a good sunblock. (Especially if you are like my mom and can't stand the smell of sunscreen or sometimes the texture- if she can't smell it or feel it she doesn't think twice about putting it on).
Anyway, if you can make it out or on your good days try visiting places that would be able to provide samples. I am looking at skinceuticals for my mom to try and their products don't seem too expensive compared to most. I am still researching this line but I know that I love their Phyto Corrective gel (my skin is oily, sensitive, and breakout prone). I want to see what their other stuff can do for my mom. And if they pass her test- then trust me, it means they are good products.
Geez, I gotta go. I start typing away and lose track of time. I got another midterm exam to study for.
Anyway, I hope this helps. I wish you the best.

aleetakline - I think that is some very good advice, all the medication you are taking is not only affecting your skin, it would also be affecting your health. Perhaps concentrating on your diet, making sure you drink enough water, and starting some supplementation (if necessary) could help things?
In terms of how to find the right skincare products, I think that this is just through experimentation. You can get samples of many things so that you can try them before you end up buying. I think Dr Hauschka or some other natural skincare line would be good for you, this is not to say that others would not be. I think you should continue to use up what you have but also add some items that deal with the issues you listed. For example, I think you should definitely be using sunblock and a vitamin C serum - this should help with the skin tone/clarity issues. Additionally to that, a scrub or another type of exfoliator would be very good as well to help with the pores and the skin tone.
P.s. If you ever pass by a spa that carries Dr Hauschka skincare then see if you can get a sample of the Rose Day Cream. This is wonderful around the eye area if you have dry skin. Also, while you're there , a sample of the Dr Hauschka cleansing cream - this will help with the pores and will also gently exfoliate your skin. HTH |

Hey there-
I think I have a mild fibromyalgia across the top of my shoulders and neck, and I know it can be very painful some days. The best thing I have been recommended for this is to alter my posture, and also to fix any internal things- diet, water etc. This has already been mentioned heaps and so is good advice. Much of the time topical skincare won't work that well unless you are eating ok.
As to brand, there are heaps out there (like you mentioned!). A vitamin C serum as recommended by mabsy will even out your complexion overall. Also, maybe regular exfoliation would be good (if you don't already). There are heaps of these to try- at the moment I like Clinique (!) 7 day scrub, but there are many popular ones here.
Anyway, sorry if I have rambled on a little but I hope some of this helps you. I hope you have some wonderful support and help. Take care!!

EDS is very generous with their samples! I recently placed my first order and it was such a treat to get the samples with my order.
I really enjoy the Dr. Hauschka products. I am noticing such a difference in my skin. The products are also a joy to use - my skin does not feel tight or dry after using them, but not oily or dirty either. |

Oh geez, I wasn't thinking...
...yes, of course eating well makes a big difference.
AND my mom notices a huge difference with how she feels when she takes her supplements. She takes regular multi vitamins, calcium, and the one she notices that helps a lot is fish oil with omega3 fatty acid. You have to make sure you are buying a quality brand though because others out there don't do anything for you (this is if you are interested in supplements). She used to take MSM which seemed to help but she can't because it tears up her sensitive stomach. My parents believe in homeopathy and saw a naturepath until my mom's conditions became so complex they had to move into modern medicine (up until her polyneuropathy and spinal surgeries she was mostly healthy and managed her fibrom. and CFS well with alternative medicine). She still practices homeopathy, though not as much as before. She has to devote a lot of time just to making sure she takes her meds on time and in the right order. It's horrible how complex it can be.
In regard to skin, another skin saver is vitamin E supplements. Works wonders. It works so well that my mom, who has dry skin and lives in a *very* dry climate, has smooth and soft elbows with out having to apply lotion to them. And it also helps calm her rashes.
I am just blabbering on so read if you want but I just am inclined to share b/c I want to help if I can. I spoke with a lady a few months ago with FibroMyalgia and she said that she stopped taking many of her meds because she started using enzymes. Apparently they helped her so much she was able to go to work every day. I can't remember what the name of the stuff she used... I wrote it down somewhere. Maybe I'll call her up. Please let me know if you are interested and I will find out for you. (If I can based on posting rules ... how 'bout it, Mabsy?) Before all my mom's other health problems reared their ugly heads -when she only really dealt with fibrom and CFS- enzymes worked for her. Again, let me know if you are intersted and I can find out (I hope my mom can remember... her memory very bad as a side effect of some of her meds).
MADDY: If you think you might have fibromyalgia make sure you get a second opinion if you go to doctors. It can be hard to diagnose and you don't want to be told you don't have when you do and vice versa. Treatment and preventative care does help.
peace out |
