I have been away awhile and am lost in the sunscreen discussions. Can someone please sum up what I should know about sunscreen ingredients?
I am a Dermalogica fan and use Dermalogica everything, including their Solar Defense Booster SPF 30 (My skin is super sensitive and I either breakout or have 'leathery' skin with the wrong products, but with Dermalogica I can use anything in their line and be sure I won't get any skin problems) but I'd use sunscreen from another line if my current one isn't actually doing anything.
TIA.
BTW if any of you smoke, please quit. I just lost my husband to lung cancer (That's why I've been away. Trying to recover. But I think healing will take forever. I miss him terribly. Anyways...) |

Sorry I can't advise about the sunscreens - I have loads of problems with them as I have a severe allergy to one of the ingredients and there are so many I don't know which it is!!
I just wanted to say how sad I feel for you losing your husband, it must be very difficult for you. I lost my Gran to lung cancer and my Mom still smokes like a trooper - it makes me so mad.
I hope that time is a good healer for you and if you ever want to 'talk' we are all here.
take care

I have not tried the Dermalogica sunscreens, I have been using Avene after reading through all of Bad Birds recomendations, it is for sensitive skin. I've been using the spray in SPF50, I find it's not oily or irritating at all.
I am sorry about your loss and can't even begin to imagine how this must be affecting you. I'm thinking of you and like Cheeks says we are here if you need us. Couldn't agree more about the smoking ![Wink](images/smiles/wink.gif) |

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm amazed at how many people still smoke.
I'm still trying to find a sunblock that doesn't clog me up. If you have one that works with your skin, keep it. If you're worried that it isn't photostable you can probably apply it more often and wear a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself if you are in the sun a lot.
I'm just starting to read the epic thread on sunblocks so if I glean anything that may be helpful to you I'll reply again. |

Thank you, I look forward to all your replies, because I'm all so disoriented still and the more I read up (on sunscreens), for some reason the more confused I get.
Freefall2, I'm 35, too! I thought I'd be having conversations about my husband passing when I'm sixty or seventy; who'd have known I'm doing it when I'm not even forty. |

This is what I do know about sunscreens. You have to use one that has the active ingredients to protect you fully from uva/uvb rays 365 days a year. The active ingreds are avobenzone OR titanium dioxide which is a physical block, more opaque in color. |

Pumpingmummy,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. I hope you are managing the best you can. Many blessings to you.
There is a great thread about sunscreens, it has about 8 pages. Not sure of the name though. User: Bad Bird, has been great at answering questions on that thread.
Because of your sensitivy I don't know if you can use s/s that have yet to be approved by the FDA, ingredients, Meroxyl and Tinsorb...? I use and like Clinques Super City Sun Block. I also am on my 2nd tube of their Whitening Line verson of SCB (forget the full name). I found it on gloss.com. They both have Zinc and Tio2 as the active ingredients. The whitening line version has higher percentages of s/s. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Lisa.
My kids and I are fine in God's good grace. My life is slowly getting back to normal, but you have NO idea how much I miss him!
I have used Lancome's UV Expert SPF50 PA+++ before, it has Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL. It was okay, I didn't break out or anything, but I didn't continue buying it because it wasn't Dermalogica (silly reason, I know, but...) plus I like Dermalofgica's SDB's texture better.
I'm now only wondering if I should go back to Lancome's UV Expert (they have an improved formulation now, don't remember what it's called though) but if my DSDB is adequate I'd just stick with it. |

SusieQ, my s/s has Avobenzone! It says on the box that the active ingredients are Avobenzone (3%), Octinoxate (7.5%), Octisalate (5%) and Oxybenzone (5%), is that okay? I top that with Lancome's Photogenic Pur Confort (SPF12 PA+)
The Bad Bird sunscreen thread is so long I can't locate the info I want, sorry! That's why I need help... |

Thats perfect pumpingmummy. Depending on the spf factor, you may find you won't have to "double up" on sunscreen with the Lancome. You should actually wear at a minimum of spf 15. |

Thanks SuzieQ. I don't wear the Lancome as a sunscreen, I only do for its finish (it's a compact foundation). |

pumpingmummy,very sorry about ur loss!!!
I lost my uncle to lung cancer in 2002.he had been smoking for 35 years.after 5 year quiting the habit,he got cancer.I lost my auntie in 2003 to lung cancer as well.she had been smoking for 40years,never quited.people always say quit smoking while a small part of people say if u already smoke for years and years, then stop it,u will be also likely to get cancer as ur body already used to it.but anyway, the most important thing is NEVER START SMOKING.
about the sunscreen,i think u'd better PM bad bird.she will give u a good answer! |

Pumpingmummy,
I'm no expert...but i did read that 10 page thread...and my notes (yes, I had to take notes) say that octinoxate and avobenzene are a BAD combination.
I'm pretty sure that Bad Bird would tell you your s/s is not stable |
