I ordered loose powder samples from Skin-Etc - one from each family - Light Beige from cool, Warm Silk from warm, and Satin from neutral. For the sake of comparison, I also got Amber which is the next darker shade from Warm Silk.
When I got the samples, I finally understood why it is important to try the shades firsthand. The colours on screen look nothing like the powders themselves. Even if they do, it is extremely difficult to find your match because the powders are highly pigmented and look deceptively dark.
I tried all 4 sample shades - directly on top of moisturiser, with primer underneath, directly on bare skin ... none of the shades were a true match for my skintone. Light Beige and Warm Silk were the closest in terms of lightness/darkness. Light Beige, however, was too pink although I like the pale pink glow it gave to my cheeks. Wearing it as a foundation would be like wearing a mask though so it was out. Warm Silk was like ... I couldn't decide what was wrong with the colour. It was a close match but I couldn't decide if it was too golden or what. I finally concluded that there was still too much pigment, ie it was too dark. I tested it on my neck where my skintone was more even and it was more obviously so.
Satin from neutral was way too dark for me, but unfortunately I didn't have a sample of Bisque to try. I deliberated for a few days because Bisque has the reputation of being very pale and I was afraid it would make me look like a ghost. But I took the plunge and order the Bisque in pressed. I prefer loose powder but I thought I'd try the pressed.
Bisque turned out to be a near perfect match for my skintone. The base goes on imperceptibly but after about 10 minutes, it seems to form a smooth second skin giving me the no-makeup-she-looks-like-she-has-perfect-skin look. After having tried the pressed, I think I still prefer the loose because it gives more control in the amount I apply and the pearly look actually creates a more "soft-focus" look compared to the mattness of the pressed.
I road-tested the powder by going to my ballet class where I usually sweat like nobody's business. The colour stayed true (although this could be because I applied it over Absence) but when I mopped (didn't rub) my face with a towel, uneven patches appeared. I think this was the extreme though. The rest of the powder looked like it could stay through heat and humidity. |

Really, really love the idea of no makeup but perfect skin look. I never wear foundation, but am considering trying this, because I have heard it doesn't look like makeup on at all. How does it not look powdery? How? It sounds too good to be true, but I think I will go and have it done here and see how it looks.
Thanks for the great review! Will definitely have to get some samples or something before ordering

Maddy - I don't think it looks powdery at all but I do spritz it with some spray to set it. Without it it can sometimes look powdery because of the tiny little hairs on the face.
Bad Bird - thank you for the review. Any idea what shade you would be in MAC coding? I use Warm Silk in pressed but have not actually ever seen the Bisque in pressed. I was too scared to get that one because I thought it'd be too pale. When I'm over in the US I might try to find a place where I can actually have a look at all these colors... |

Hi Mabsy, I can't remember if I told you this already (not even 22 yet and I'm already losing my mind ) but if you live anywhere near Indooroopilly, the new Ella Bache salon there on the top floor (food court end, across from rabbit photo, priceline etc) has a full range of JI stuff... I couldn't believe how many different foundation and blush colours there were. I could have sat there and played all day In the end I was happy one of the girls came to help me cos I'm new at this mineral make up thing and I didn't know where to start! |

THANK YOU!!!! I could hug you right now!
A chemist in Garden City used to stock them but they no longer do - I haven't been able to find anywhere else. Funny thing is that I'm only ten minutes away from Indro - I live in Jamboree Heights..... |

No worries! And hey while your there, I don't know if you've tried Ella Bache's gommage exfoliant but it's DIVINE!! I've noticed you also seem to be an exfoliant junkie (like me! ) so ask for a sample. Its got these weird little granuals (they're more like flakes mixed with granuals) in a gel made from essential oils. It smells delicious and makes your skin feel oh so soft. |

Maddy - It does not look powdery because it is not talc or starch based.
Mabsy - I'm afraid I've never tried MAC foundations so I don't know which coding I fall into. I do remember buying many years ago a concealor and it is something like NC20 or 15. The colour was very yellow on me because at that time, I was trying to counteract the blue veins under the eye thing. In terms of lightness/darkness, it was about right though.
I remember reading that you use Bisque in liquid, so I think in pressed it should go well on you. It is not as pale as those beautiful white skins of redheads, but if I pile it on thickly, it does make me look a bit paler than usual because it still lacks that bit of yellow to match my skintone perfectly (I'm Chinese). Hope I'm making sense here. |

Thanks for posting the review, Bad Bird! I went ahead and ordered samples! I hope to find a match. I'm a Stila D/E, Vincent Longo Sandy Beige, and MAC NC40. I am thinking that I am maybe a Golden Glow, Warm Siena, or Autumn. |

When I went to the MAC store in SD I actually found out that I'm an NW20 - rather interesting since the MAC SAs in Australia matched me to NC15 which I thought was too light. Anyways, it has been confirmed that I am an NW20 and JI pressed foundation in Warm Silk works well for me. I'm guessing Bisque might be a bit too light... |

Bad Bird- Thanks again for review and comments. Am definitely going to try this product. I don't like wearing ordinary foundation and hate looking too 'made up' but I like the idea of airbrushed looking clear and even skin. So hopefully this will be the one!!
Thanks again

BadBird - thanks for that - I was wondering if the Bisque would be pale enough for me but now I know it probably won't! Thanks!!!
I emailed Pure Luxe and she said that if her palest wasn't right she'd custom blend for me so will be ordering some samples!!!
(I can use BE #1 (the lightest) or Youngblood 'Pearl' as long as I'm very light handed but they aren't quite right - still looking for that perfect color!!!) |
