I just ordered some ingredients from the "formulations" WEB site.
One is 70% glycolic acid. I read recently
that some are saying that glycolic acid (or any chemical peel) helps in the short run but
damages the skins outer layer so in the long run does not help. I just today looked through recent articles on MEDLINE that suggest
glycolic acid is good (results in thicker skin and stimulates collegen growth (by doing a skinbiopsy). The proviso was that you not use high concentrations often (not more than once every other week). I intend to start with 20%.
Lisa
Does anyone here use a glycolic acid peel regularly and if so what was your experience? |

Hi Sharky!
I do not use Glycolic Peels, but I do use Glycolic Pads with 10% Glycolic Acid. I read in Dr. Denese's skincare book, that she recommends to all her patients using somewhere between 8% to 10% once daily. I am trying to remember what her book said, but she gave a case where she had a 60 year old patient whose skincare regimen consisted of washing with bar soap only. She changed her regimen and put the patient on glycolic pads daily, which the patient was a bit worried about because she had mature, aging, dry skin but within 6 weeks her wrinkles were reduced and softened and her skin was glowing. I guess Dr. Denese really believes in Glycolic Acid. She also recommends daily Antioxidants like Vit. C Serums, and also Hyaluronic Acid, Argerilene, and Suncreen of at least SPF 30. |

In the salon I worked in I saw wonderful results from Glycolic Peels. I myself preferred the Aloe Peels. I can't tell you much about the Aloe Peels but my friend (facialist) loved them and they were better for my sensitive skin.
Home peels scare me above 10%. Perhaps some of you have had great results from higher doses of glycolic acid but personally I would start off with the lower percentage and only go higher gradually if you skin can tolerate it.
My daugter uses the Avon Clinical Glycolic 10% and loves it. You are told to use it every other day. She uses it daily and I have seen a big improvement in her skin texture and pore size.

Mysty--what brand of glycolic peels do you use?
I've tried MD Skincare alpha/beta peels and loved it the first few times. After about 5 uses my skin broke out in little bumps. Any rec's would be great! Txs.

I got my order today. I diluted the GA to about 30% with water then mixed in some grapeseed oil to make an emulsion (for soothing and penetration). I put it on my hands, face, neck and chest. Left for about 10minutes and washed it off. I can;t see any reddening on my hands or chest and only slight on my face or neck (I did a patch test first under my chin). I coated my face with Vit E
after. I'll wait a week or two and try again.
I'd love to hear about others experience with glycolic acid peels. |

I'm going to sound a little silly here but do these acid peels take off the top layer of your skin??? How exactly do they work? |

One day after my first peel attempt. Most of my face looks the same as before (also neck and chest). I do have puffiness and some redness along the sides of my mouth and my one real wrinkle actually looks a bit bigger because of that. The article I read from a MEDLINE search said u need to use a concentration where some redness occurs but not much. I also did the tops of my hands. They feel softer and there is no redness. I will try again in a week or two. I just ordered more ingredients (aloe and retinyl palimate). The aloe is supposed to be healing after a peel.
This time I used vit E oil |

I use these also. I use them only every other day though, with Dr. Brandt's Microdermabrasion in a Jar, 2 days a week. I had problems using The MD pads everyday, so maybe try cutting back a bit...to 4 times a week maybe.
Has anybody tried both the MD Skincare and the Avon?? I would like to know if they are similar, as the Avon is more affordable. |

Hi, just thought i would share my experiences with Glycolic Acid Peels. I bought a 30% solution from perfectskin.co.uk.com and it was £13.00 for a bottle which will do about 12 peels. The way their leaflet said to do it was apply 1ml of the solution to ur face using the brush that i bought from them also. For the first time u leave it on for 1 minute and then a week later for 2 mins and so on up until 10 mins. The solution on the skin doesnt burn it just tingles and feels really scratchy and quite irritating, but i would not say that it is sore - but here it comes the sore bit is when u neutralize it will a sodium bicarbonate solution, oh man does it sting, especially near the eye area (obviously dont go too close). Afterwards the skin is a little pink but i just applied a good moisturiser afterwards. I didnt notice any real difference in my skin initially apart from the blackheads on my forehead were coming to the surface and were easy to pop! It was after i had completed the course of 10 weeks that i noticed the lines on my forehead had faded a good bit and I had a significant reduction in the laughter lines. My skin is less drier, but i am putting that down to the moisturiser i am using now being able to penetrate the skin better. I am now awaiting the 50% arriving, my sister and i do this together so if we are scarred then we will be scarred together! |

I do a 70% glycolic acid peel every 1-2 weeks. That, combined with my overall skincare regimen, has led to what really is a total transformation of my skin. My skin was never really bad, but, given that I have pretty oil skin, it was far from flawless - my pores were quite visible and the overall tone of my skin was uneven. Not anymore - my skin is even, firm, and virtually poreless.
On the days that I do the glycolic peels I change my normal routine and follow the peel with a SuperStrength Copper Peptide Serum and emu oil.
If you are going to do these peels though, you absolutely MUST a good sunscreen or you're gonna be in biggggg trouble. |

Hi Katee, thanks for the advice, obviously u are an experienced peeler, what strength of sunscreen do u use - i have currently been using spf15 but i have just received an email from the Dr H people here in ireland and they do a SPF20 would this be strong enough do u think - i have jsut started on their range and wanted to try everything! (although here in ireland we dont get much sun!!) I thought the 70% was professional strength and not for home use - is this correct? I have read about the copper peptides - what difference have u found using them instead of a moisturiser(i am using the dr h rose day cream). Like u my skin isnt too bad, but i have a few chicken pox scars i would like to fade and a few freckles even though my husband likes them. Have u ever been tempted to try the 12.5% TCA peels, i have read about these on perfectcoplexion.net but havent read any reviews on them. |

I've never been tempted to try the TCA peels - from what I've read, they seem a little harsh and acne / acne scarring has never been a problem for me. 70% is technically profession strength, but the ph of the solution has a great deal to do with it. I purchase the stuff from platinumskincare.com and I really am very happy with the results.
As for the Copper Peptide - it isn't a moisturizer. In fact, if you use a SuperCop serum, you usually need at least a light moisturizer after applicating. I had originally been using SuperCop serum at night and a vitamin C serum during the day. I had read some really good stuff about the remodelling properties of copper peptides, and I know that they have been utilized for quite some time to accelerate healing after burns and such.
Ultimately, I abandoned the use of it because I wasn't seeing any results. I ended up changing my entire skincare regimen to the IS Clinical line + Prevage and I'm very happy with the results.
I've maintained the glycolic peels nevertheless. Both my derm and the co. I buy the products from recommend following the peel with CP Serum, so I've done that. I find that on the few occasions that I haven't followed with CP, my skin looks sunburned. Nothing major, but the CP definitely alleviates that effect. Plus, although the purpose of the peels is exfoliation, the use of the CP and the emu oil immediately after prevents the uglies. I see additional exfoliation a couple of days after I peel, but its easily dealt with using a mild scrub....
Hope that helps a bit... Good luck! |

Katee: I used copper peptide after the peel also. I also used some "second skin" pads on the red areas and they looked great the next day.
I haven't tried 70% full strength. Did you work up to that level slowly?
Also doesn't emu oil slow healing that's what I've read in MEDLINE searches. |

Since I had been using a fairly heavy duty exfoliant prior to my first peel, I started with the 70%, even though they do recommend starting with a lower concentration.
In the beginning, I left the solution on for 3 minutes. I did a peel once a week and gradually increased the time, as per the instructions.
I'm not a fan of emu oil, and I have oily skin to start with, but platinum skin sent me a small vial of it, and recommended that I use it VERY sparingly on any red spots post peeling, which is what I did. The results were great. To my surprise, the oil sunk right in and didn't really leave an oil residue. I don't use it for anything else, but if you do a search, you'll see that a number of people here swear by it. My understanding is that it is something of a carrier oil that allows for deeper penetration of whatever product is used with it....
With all that said, I still do a peel every couple of weeks and, along with the rest of my skincare regimen, I'm very happy with the overall results.... |

Thanks. I'll try another peel this weekend maybe try a slightly higher concentration on areas like my forehead where there was no redness at all. |

I'm gonna bring this thread current instead of starting a new one.
I'm trying to put together a simple yet effective regime, including actives. Yes I left out, except on occassion, active ingredients (such as AHA, Vit. C, retinoids, etc) in my routine during winter.
Has anyone tried Dr. Denese's facial firming pads (glycolic acid)? This can be bought on qvc.com. I can't seeem to find a glycolic acid pad that I don't react negatively to. In the past I have tried (sampled), Avon and MD Skincare. I broke out in bumps big time...some were large and hurt as well. NO THANK YOU.
I'm hoping someone can compare or at least give a semi-review on Dr. Denese's. Many thanks!!! |

lassie1234,
I would not use any peels right now. Your skin is super reactive and you are just starting with Renova, so trying one new thing at a time is probably enough. As well, with Rosacea (sp), I do not know if glycolic peels are even suitable. Since you were just at the derm's, what did he/she say about what you should be using in your skin? From what people have told me, they do not use anything in top of their retinoid product.
Also, maybe you could not write all in capital letters as it is very hard to read. Thanks |

sorry about large letters.. sight is lousy. well they just said not to use any anit aging creams. i did use the estee lauder overnight resiliance. should i stop ? and for the broken caps , he said a laser would help it. but too expensive. but i do have them in my eyes and they are red , runny and feel like a rock is in my eye. so maybe ins. would pay if meds dont work. i dont understand him giving my renova if it causes more broken caps. thats what i read anyway. so should i not use anything over the renova at all ? thanks. lassie 1234 |

lassie1234,
I totally agree with faith. Where you are under a doctors care I would go by what he/she says. Usually they will recommend the cleanser/moisturizer you should be using with an RX product. If they have not told you the routine you should be using please ask. You are paying for advice. Renova plus peels could get you into a world of trouble. Please be careful.
