My rating: 3/5
30ml usually costs around AUD $110
Good product as a substitute for ampoules to prepare skin for other moisturisers. Serum in handy spray packaging. With my ‘3’ rating, that means I’d buy it again. On the positive side, it makes subsequent creams work a bit differently - they ‘grip’ more, and it makes moisturiser have a slightly more firming and glowing effect. It’s also damned decadent and fun. On the downside, this product seems to do virtually nothing if used in isolation. Which makes it expensive.
The Gel Spray is sometimes marketed as an alternative to the Selection Ultimate Care cream for day use for oily skins, but I use it as a serum before applying the cream. I never use it in isolation, because it simply isn’t moisturising enough for me. I could see it being useful as a standalone product for someone with very oily skin who is interested in packing in some nutrients with barely any hydration or oil.
It’s a honey-coloured, gel-textured serum with miniscule shimmery gold-coloured particles in it. Quite heavily perfumed, presumably to overcome the smell of the champagne yeast that differentiates the Babor Ultimate Selection line. Feels very luxurious, and my female friends who try it rave about the texture, fragrance and application, but we’ve all found it very hard to determine if it actually has any effect by itself. It sinks in very quickly with very little sign it was ever there. It’s only when I see that the moisturiser applied afterwards is lasting longer, is more hydrating than usual, and skin looks a little bit more flushed and feels a bit ‘denser’, or firmer, that I could really tell I’d applied it at all.
I use it about once a week, and also if my skin is feeling dry. I used it for around 12 months before moving onto other products, but have returned to it. Given I use it on an occasional basis only, and never alone, it is hard to isolate long-term effects to actually rate. However, I do have to take into consideration the number of very positive comments I received when using both the Selection Ultimate Care cream daily, with the Ultimate Gel Spray once or twice a week. I attribute most of the comments to the cream, but the spray certainly made the cream work harder. I’ve found I can get that ‘densifying’ effect with heavier moisturisers, like Gernetic Synchro, but I’d also expect my skin to start breaking out within a few days. Happily, the Ultimate Selection products helped my skin stay clear. No threat of breakouts.
My verdict – a good accompaniment to any moisturiser for extra hydration and slight temporary firming and glow, but it seemed virtually useless by itself. Very luxurious fun. This product fits in my ‘nice to have’ category only.

The above post is a review of the following product available at EDS:

Babor Selection Ultimate Gel Spray (30 ml / 1.0 oz.)
This light moisturizing gel seals in moisture to the epidermis and calms the skin. It protects against the effects of light-induced aging while minimizing fine lines and wrinkles and gives the skin a soft appearance.

Thanks, bushy. Hope it helps someone. Too many products out there to experiment with them all! And too many in my house, too. Since joining the forum, my credit card has developed stretch marks and Mr ej just had to build me an extension for my vanity unit to fit more in (because the linen press was overflowing ). I'll try to post some reviews on not-so-hot products, too. |
