I've read in many places that vitamin C treatments/serums should be used in the mornings under sunscreen to combat UV damage (I don't remember the specific mechanics..)
But my question is, is vit C the only antioxidant that works in this manner under sunscreen, or does the rule apply to all antioxidants in general?
TIA!! |

Most anitoxidants just fight free radicals but Vitamin C serum actually provides some protection against sun damamge but not enough to use only Vit C as your protection. |

Yes you still need sunscreen protection = preferably a physical sunscreen. |

VC is totally different. When using this, please do not let your skin meets sunshine or any light, because it would damage your skin a a short time: your skin would turns black, and spots would come into it, which is definately hard to remove! |

I am not sure where flyfly is getting her/his info, but there have been studies, at least with Skinceuticals C, E, Ferulic, published that show increased sun protection with using the C, E, Ferulic under a sunscreen. |

Hmmn, i might be tempted to take this with a pinch of salt. If vitamin C truly turned your skin black then surely it would not be allowed into ANY skin cream on the planet?!
I know there are plenty of people using a vitamin C serum (both commercial brands and DIY versions) and they have never seemed to have any problems. Infact, most of the advice i have read HAS been to use in the day-time because it does offer a little sun protection (although obviosuly not completion protection).
But, with everything out there in life, we are all different. So what works for one might not work for everyone. However, i'm pretty sure it's okay to use vitamin c during the day-time.

Hahahah that's funnieeeee!
Anyways thank you, rileygirl and Teabags for clearing things up! That almost gave me a heart attack, phew!
So to be clear, it is specifically vit C, not ALL antioxidants, that can offer sun protection and should be used in the mornings, right? Thanks!

Vit C (in my experience) does offer sun protection, and is great for skin that has been exposed to sun without a sunscreen (which if anyone is serious about their skinhealth should not be without a sunscreen to protect from UVA/UVB), but in conjunction with it being used under a sunscreen, its really doubling up on your protection from those rays, and thus preventing damage.
I kind of think flyfly was thinking about Retin A which makes the skin more sensitive to light of all kinds (and thus increases the skins capacity to be damaged by UVA/UVB) but we will have to wait for him/her to answer that one! |
