Hi Everyone!
My sister is totally nutted out with a banger of a toothache....she can't get to the dentist until Monday ....she is taking ibuprofen and tylenol....does anyone know of any home remedies (or anything else) effective for managing tooth pain?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

OK I am pretty educated as far as dentistry(family dentist/assistants). If she is sensitive to hot she probably needs a root canal. If that is the case she needs an antibiotic to deal with the infection. She could go to a walk in clinic or call her doctor. Antibiotics really will take away the pain (but it will come back until she has treatment). As far as ibuprofen, if they are 200 mgs. she needs to take four. That is RX strength (800mgs).An ice pack on the site might help too. They sometimes call this a HOT tooth. Been there. Bad Grin A clinic might also give her an RX for something stronger. If she is in that much pain and you have no local walk-ins or her MD is not available go to the emergency room.

If she is sensitive to cold/sweets it is most likely decay. Might not need a root canal but could ...but infection is probably not present. She still should take Ibuprofen. She could go to the pharmacy and get ambasol to drop around her tooth.

There is nothing worse then a toothache.

Winnie has given great advice as always. All I can offer is sympathy. I hate toothache. I would rather give birth.

This may be a long shot but my mum used to give me room-temperature chamomile tea in those situations. It apparently does help relieve the pain. I used to just swirl it over the affected area. I can't think of anything else natural - sorry Sad

Winnie just read your post and I now know for sure that I have some tooth decay Confused Our dentists are all private now and it costs a fortune so I keep putting it off Rolling Eyes If memory serves me correctly you can buy far stronger pills over the counter in the States than you can over here. Typical Rolling Eyes

Oh man, can I relate! Last year I ended up in the emergency room with tooth pain so horrific that I wanted to put myself through a wall.

They gave me percoset, and the next day I had a root canal, with my dentist telling me that it was a pretty bad infection. I had made the mistake of taking 2 percoset in the a.m. before the root canal b/c I was in THAT much pain, and by the time he started drilling I was LOOPED!!!!! I think I actually fell asleep during it, I was completely silly.

On the way home, I had to have my sister pull over so I could violently vomit out of the window. Nice visual, no? I was unable to eat anything from the day before, and that with the combo of drugs did me in!

The only thing that some what alleviated the pain while I waited in the e.r. was to slowly sip room temperature water. Don't know why, but it took the throbbing down.

I too would rather give birth than go through that again!

I don't actually have much of a fear on dentists anymore due to the years of having to wear a brace but then my dentist was gorgeous Laughing
Now a few years back I was forced to go a have a cluster of verucas treated - I'd had them since the age of 11!!!!
They were treated for a year and half and wouldn't budge, even the chropadist got impatient so out came the acid solution Shock Shock Shock now that hurt, I fainted as well and had to be carried home Embarassed
Even more annoying they came back and double the amount!!!! I am avoiding having them dug out.
Naproxin is a good pain reliever but you need to have it after a reasonably good meal.

Mad Medical cost just keep getting higher and higher. It scares the hell out of me when I think of my husband retiring in a few years and we will have to pay all of this out of pocket. Co-pays are bad enough Bad Grin

As far as putting off having decay taken care of because of cost that is really upsetting. I don't know how expensive dental visits are where you live???? Let me tell you it is not a pretty site losing your teeth. I would rather spend the money on good dental care then skin care. The whole look of a woman/mans face changes if they end up losing their teeth. Your smile is one of the first things that people see...then eyes.

A good preventative (once decay is addressed) is brushing two times a day (esp. right before bed), flossing! I think everyone should have a professional cleaning 2x's a year. It is worth the investment. Very Happy

We took the boat out for the weekend so I know I'm too late but if you can get a hold of prescription Tylenol with Codiene that should help. 222's or 292's are good too. Can you still get those easily in Canada?

Toothache is one of my greatest fears. I had an evil dentist when I was a kid so now I fanatically take care of my teeth. I've had dentists tell me I need to back off a little bit because I'm brushing off the enamel.

Right now I'm suffering from a jaw ache. I sprained my jaw - again. The first time was a few years ago at the drop zone. I was eating a power bar between jumps and put it in the cooler to keep the ants from getting it. The next bite I took was really hard and when I tried to chew it with my molars I thought I broke a tooth. For MONTHS I was taking way too many anti-inflammatories. Nothing would touch the pain. Finally a neighbor who was a massage therapist was over one evening giving us pedicures and worked on my jaw. It hurt so bad tears were streaming out of my eyes. The next morning the pain was gone!

This time I did it in my sleep on Friday night. I woke up when I clamped my teeth together hard and felt a pop in my jaw. Down here I don't have a massage therapist but I can buy anything over the counter. If you can pronounce it you can buy it. So far I'm just taking Naxodol. It's an anti-inflammatory with a muscle relaxer that I took when I had whiplash. I'm going to pick up some Tylenol with Codiene when I go into town later.

Princesita, I'm sure you'll be just fine. I got to keep my wisdom teeth because the genius doing my orthodontics decided to take out my back molars when I was 11 before they had even come through the gums. His logic was that it would make room for the wisdoms and there wouldn't be a whole lot of crowding post-braces. It worked out but the teeth he removed were perfect and the wisdoms came in when I was 16, a little mishapen and at an angle. I've since had to have one of them crowned. The surgery to remove the molars was no problem and I don't remember any bad pain at all after, just a dull ache for a few days thanks to good drugs. My only real complaint is that my jaw has never been the same. My mouth is smallish and the doctor had to dislocate my jaw - like a snake - so he could work in there.

Princesita,

I know it is soooo scary!! I had to have mine out that way too, and all of them were impacted. I know you will be fine though!!! They will give you pain medicine...I think it is better to be well informed, so ask the surgeon any questions that you have first, and make sure you are aware of the healing process. I got to eat lots of ice cream when I had mine done, so that is always a bonus!!! Very Happy

this may be too late but in future everyone needs to keep some clove oil handy, you've seen the Marathon Man...it works just dab it or use a cotton bud!
