hi, i love mineral foundations due to redcheekies and broken caps... i use bare escenuals and i really like it but, it is too shimmery.. and that vail sucks. makes me white as a ghost. i know there are others out there. im just starting renova and would like to hear what some think of using another. but, i hate to have to put a few different powders on to conceal the redness. with B E i really dont have to. i just hate shimmies. it likes to find all the lines, wrinkles, cricks and crannies... any advice out there Brick wall

lassie1234 - I've found the BE to be too pearly for me if I didn't set it with another powder. I have since moved on to Jane Iredale pressed powder and couldn't be happier with it. The loose version of the JI foundation is supposed to be shinier than the pressed btw.

hi, has anyone used mineral secret before. it has a spf 20 ? i hate the shimmer in these mineral foundations. i use the bare escenuals because it really works for my redness on my cheekies. and i also like it because it's just one powder i need to use.. i notice that when looking at luxe and some of the others im guessing its the mica that gives the shimmer.now she found this mineral secrets... i would like to hear if anyone has used it and do you have to apply other products to cover the red and then use the foundation... this seems to be a good product from what i read. and the spf 20 !! Shock i just hate to keep buying and finding something else that could be better for me. so lets check in to this product ? like i said i like B E because its one powder. but hate the shimmer. and the vail makes me look the walking dead ! thanks

Boy, I guess I have used a lot of mineral makeup in my day, as I can pretty much say "yea, I tried that" to many of the brands!

Okay, Mineral Secrets......

First, be assured that as long as mineral makeup contains the "oxides" (DO and TO) they will have a sun protection factor of about 15-20%. That includes BE and the lovely Jane Iredale. Since that is pretty much what mineral makeup is - they will all have sun protection to some degree.

That being said, Mineral Secrets does not contain "Mica" - which is what gives the "glow" to the mineral lines. Mineral Secrets puts lavender and green tea (I think) in their minerals, and they are a very nice up and coming line. If you DO like the glow, they have a product called "Glow" to give you that BE look. I think if you go to their site you can get a starter kit which includes a couple of samples of foundation, porcelain (an oil control product)a nice flat top brush and a flocked sponge, and Glow all for about $60.

My opinion? A nice mineral makeup, however, like all mineral makeups that contain bismuth, I itched like crazy and broke out in bumpies, especially in the warm weather. So, Mineral Secrets was not for me. I will also tell you that at the time, if you go to the Mineral Secrets official website, the customer service was less than stellar and there were a lot of complaints against them. That may have changed by now though.

My opinion is that Jane Iredale is the best when it comes to the "biggie" companies. I don't think her foundation has the glow that BE has either, especially her pressed. If I hadn't reacted to the bismuth in her line, I would have probably stayed with it forever. However, my quest to find a mineral makeup that I could use, led me to some terrific lines like Aromaleigh, BareFaced Minerals, and Botany 101. Terrific quality stuff, great color choice, and though Botany has some rather large customer service issues, wonderful smaller companies to work with!!!

thanks for that great info...... now which one do you use ? and do you have to use a conceler for redness ? i like the loose minerals. and if i want shimmer, ill put it on myself. my skin is not so sensitive. its just i get red flare ups with soaps and creams.. like today i just had to try my estee lauder one more time to feel that silk feeling. and BOOM Exclamation the red was awful.. so all my creams that i loved are dead and gone.and on my way for the right mineral foundation without mixing green powder first... im waiting for the luxe and if that doesnt do what i want ill go to the next. but what is your or anyone elses favorite mineral foundation and let me know if they are shimmer'y or not.. thank you so much for that info.something to think about.i just want to remove the redness the best i can without showing every damn wrinkle showing.i like the higher spr because im using renova. so i really want that protection too. besides the spf moisterizers. again thanks Wink lassie1234

Mineral Makeups do a really good job of hiding the redness.

There is a sweetheart of a gal on the Aromaleigh forum (jane) who suffers terribly from rosacea and the Glissade (AL's name for one of their foundations) truly hides the redness in her face. She shows before and after pix.

My faves are Glissade, and Botany 101 for foundation. I love BFM for lippies and eyeshadows. However, with Botany 101 they are going through some tough times right now, so my advice is to wait before you order. Aromaleigh has a gazillion color choices for foundation, plus you can order three free samples of color with any purchase.....They may be a good place to start, as well as Bare Faced Minerals. Both companies have top notch customer service and Rhonda at BFM makes you feel like you're her only client! Just a terrific gal.

No, I don't have redness - just light, light brown hyperpigmentation, and I actually use Burt's Bees concealer first, then apply my makeup and it conceals quite nicely.

I think you will have good luck with the What Red product from Pure Luxe too. It gets raves on the Delphi boards.

HTH

Hi Ladies,
For those I have not had the pleasure of talking to, I am Christina, owner of Pure Luxe Smile
I pop in here once in awhile and read, but this is my first posting, my PL board keeps me pretty busy..lol I am first and foremost a makeup ADDICT, and LOVE reading about all different products and lines Very Happy
I wanted to post a few helpful tips for anyone trying mineral makeup and/or having application trouble, be it my line or any of the other great lines out there.
After years of applying traditional makeup, there is a learning curve when starting out applying MMU. We have to unlearn all the ways we have come to regard as normal applications.
Myself, like thousands of other people, started out with BE. The infomercials just pull you right in..lol The concept just amazed me. I got my first kit and just dove in head first! I soon found out that, although I liked the powder as a foundation concept, the Bismuth Oxychloride made me itch like crazy. Bismuth is what gives BE the shiny, waxy look when applied. It is technically a pearlizer/whitener, but a lot of people have reactions from it which vary from itching when hot to eye irritation.
I started experimenting with other smaller lines, and after a few disappointments, decided that I could make exactally what I wanted, so I did Very Happy

* Most MMU lines will tell you to "buff" the minerals into your skin, personally, I do not suggest it. What you are doing is essentially forcing the powder into your pores, causing more of a problem then you may have started with. I suggest a fluffy powder brush to wisk the minerals on. Usually 2 light applications will produce a medium coverage.

* Through trial and error, I have discovered that the best look I achieve is when I fluff on a light layer of powder, spritz my face with a hydrosol, let dry, and fluff another layer on, and spritz again. The spritzing helps meld the powder into your skin and quickly gets rid of the powder settling into my lines look.

* With mineral makeup, less is more. Too much and you will end up looking like you just got hit in the face with a big powder puff. MMU is about light layers.

* Start your application with a well moisturized, but DRY skin. Any residual moisture from moisturizers, etc... can cause streaks and splotches.

* Some people have trouble with the color correctors. Most companies (mine included) carry color correctors designed to lessen or hide discolorations. Again, less is more. A huge number of my ladies have roseacea, and for most, the green (what Red?) corrector has been a miracle for them. It is all grade school art class 101. Green+red=brown. So the green works with the red skin to produce a skintone tan, or "brown". Just apply lightly. Too much and the green will overpower the red and leave you looking like a martian.

* The application of MMU may seen long and drawn out at first, but just like when we were first allowed to wear makeup, it is all about getting the technique down pat and it becomes second nature.

The biggest point I try to stress about makeup, is it is supposed to be FUN! Try a color you don't normally use, worst case senerio, you say "yuck" and wipe it off Laughing No harm. Makeup can boost your self-esteem and make you feel good. Just have fun!

I could go on forever (and would given half the chance..lol), but if anyone has any specific questions, please feel free to get with me and I will help all I can. I will check back here and see if anyone has any questions or comments.

Thanks ladies!!

Thanks for posting!

Its great to get some insider tips from someone in the business. I'm a recent convert to minerals and am thoroughly enjoying the experimentation that goes along with new products.

I sort of feel like I did as a young teen -playing around with all kinds of colours & combinations. Glad to hear your company ships internationally - will definitely try out some samples.

I tried the Bare Escentuals Mineral Foundation. It made me break out in acne-like spots in my T-zone. After reading some posts on here, I did some research on bismuth and now I'm going to try the Bare Faced Mineral one! Smile So many good recommendations and helpful tips on here!

I just got my first mineral make up a few weeks ago and I went with the JI pressed powder in Amber. I love it!! It took a little practice to get it on properly but once I got the hang of it, it was so easy. I can get ready in a flash and my skin looks clear but not cakey. I find spritzing with either the JI hyrating stuff or Jurlique's rose water afterwards really helps to set it and minimise that powdery look. Also, I finish it off with Jurlique's rose dust to help reduce my oily t-zone.

does pure luxe mmu powders have a shimmery or a matte finish? I am really dying to find a mmu that I can use, but they all are either too shiny or accentuate my pores.

thanks,

Hi Liz,
The Pure Luxe foundation is a matte, but it is not a flat, dull matte.
The misconception with mica in foundations is that it will add the shiny shimmer to foundations, but there are many different mica finishes. Mica in foundations help in adding a color depth and complexity that an iron oxide just can't do alone.
If you do apply a MMU foundation and get pores that look like you can drive a car into them Embarassed , try using the spritz method or using a damp cosmetic sponge and dab the area where your pores show. The dampness of the sponge will help set the powder quicker, and get rid of the powdery look.

Hi!
I've just ordered a sample kit of Pure Luxe so will let you know how I get on. I have tried BE, Youngblood and Pure Minerals and the BE is by far the one that shows flaws most. However I found that using a latex type foundation sponge to blend the minerals after application makes pores and any other flaw disappear. I also found as a 'side effect'of Badbirds tip to put a layer of cornstrach over my SPF before applying my minerals also made a huge difference in how the minerals go on. (Though I had to experiment to make this work - the Youngblood cornstarch finishing powder worked best for me) A quick application on Precriptives Magic powder and a spritz of Avene Mineral water and it stays put all day, I just need to touch up a shiny chin and nose once in the afternoon. (But thats the SPF's fault). Very Happy

Hi Christina! Welcome to EDS Very Happy
I've been using some PL samples and am planning on getting some full size items. I have a couple of questions tho and would appreciate if you could fill me in before I take the plunge....
Are all your shadows glittery, or are there any matte finishes?
Foundation - I have a fair complexion (burn easily) and would like your recommendation as to colour + what would you suggest as an 'all over' glow finish to put on top of the foundation to take the 'pale' look away? I'm using BE foundations "Light" and "Fairly Light" with "Warmth" on top. Trouble with "warmth" is that its a bit too tan on me.
Your Line Eraser and What Red ROCK!!! I'm also having fun with the shadows I ordered, but for daily wear I'm looking for something less dramatic.
Thanks in advance Christine Very Happy

Hi, there! Smile

I also had probs with BE being too shiny/taffetta like on my face and thanks to raves here on the boards, I tried Jane Iredale. JI is lovely! The pressed version is the one I use and love for my oily skin. They also have a loose form--Amazing base--but it is more "glowly". I definitely recommend trying JI. Smile

Hi Anya,
Glad you are enjoying playing with the samples Very Happy
The shadows range from ultra flashy to silk mattes. This afternoon actually, I was working on more silks to add to the collection. I really hate dull, flat looking mattes, so I designed the silk mattes to be a no shimmer, yet almost have a velvet/silk look to them. You can find them here http://www.pureluxecosmetics.com/wst_page14.html
I do have dozens more shadows in the regular line shadows that are very low shimmer. Suede and Fauna are two that come to mind right away. Let me know which colors you prefer wearing, and I can steer you towards the more subtle ones Wink
Since the two BE shades you use lean towards a warm tone. I would suggest a mix of 25% Ivory, 75% Warm Cream. (I do custom mixes at no charge.) If you like the effect of using the warmth, and it is just too overpowering, you may like the PL Sunkissed bronzer. Sunkissed bronzer is for lighter complexions, and will give you a warm glow.

Rev-er Upper is the BE skin Prep to use before applying your MMU. It contains AHA's as well as botanical extracts (I do not know which ones). They say it smooths your complexion, although I have never tried it.

Lassie, this burned you as it contains AHA's. I believe a number of us warned you about using AHA's while using Renova...it was all too much for your skin. I think these products pn their own would have very different effects.

I'm getting some new makeup, as previously mentioned I tried BE and it's not for me (Prone to bismuth)

With there being as many experienced and knowledgeable people on here, I wonder: What is the best mineral makeup for someone with young (18.), sensitive/combination skin that does not easily burn? There are so many brands, and I don't know what to choose.
Thanks,

I can highly recommend Bare Faced Minerals! Terrific product, great customer service. Sample size of just about everything so you don't have to commit to a biggie size until you're sure you love the product! No bismuth either.

Also, although I've never tried the foundation, people like Pure Luxe as well, and if you're in the states Aromaleigh has great stuff as well. There are so many companies out there, you'd be completely surprised like I was to learn how many there were!!! A company called Everyday minerals will send you free samples. They are new and also nice to deal with.

I recieved a sample order from "Cory Cosmetics" the other day, and I have to say I was very impressed with the products.

I LOVED the foundation; it was very easy to apply, covered amazingly well, yet looked perfectly natural Very Happy
And I only had to use a few grains to do my entire face!
I also recieved beautiful colored blushes and eyeshadow samples, very easy to work with as well and a very nice texture.

For those of you who haven´t tried this line, I can highly recommend it Exclamation
The samples are very generous, and also very cheap ($ 0.35/each).

I still have Pure Luxe to try out though Wink
