since i've gone thru the messages and others have declared you the unofficial sunscreen expert..
serious question for you.
hearsay has it that we need to reapply ever two hours, do you do that personally or just ignore it?
Coz i wear makeup and i don't think sunscreen is gonna sit very well over makeup and i don't want to break out into hives or something..
That la roche thingie sunscreen my doctor said "these days its improved sunscreen, u no longer need to reapply it, just once is ok"
coz i think unless you were doing serious sports (i don't) then u need it. if hardly sweating and just walking around under the sun, u don't?
helps if you can share if you apply it every 2 hours, if you suffer a wrath of rashes on your face or you just put it on and forget about it

Hi anon - Bad Bird cautioned me that sebum displaces sunscreen, so to get the best protection, it's necessary to re-apply. This isn't practical for me on normal days when I'm also wearing makeup and not in the sun that much. However, when I'm outdoors for prolonged periods, I definitely re-apply sunscreen. I also wear a hat if I'm in the sun for a long time.
I suppose if your skin is very oily, you may need to re-apply in any case. My skin (I'm 53) isn't very oily.
Also, if you engage in rigorous physical activity and/or perspire a lot, my guess is that re-application may be needed even more frequently to insure maximum protection.
But Bad Bird understands the science behind sunscreen much better than I do, so she'll hopefully respond to your inquiry. |

Hi Anon,
April is absolutely right. The reapplication rule used to be for unstable sunscreens, but research has shown that reapplication is still necessary for photostable sunscreens because of sebum displacement. The recommendation is every 2 hours, but has April said, you could probably get away with a longer period if you're not very oily, haven't perspired much, or haven't wiped off anything.
I personally have no solution if you wear makeup over the sunscreen and are out the whole day. For me, if I know I'm going to be out the whole day, I wouldn't put makeup over sunscreen. In fact, nowadays, I skip makeup altogether because my skin is improving everyday with sunscreen use, and I have this fear that makeup would displace sunscreen in some form ... I've no way of telling.  |

Just a thought... but how about sunblock SPRAYS rather than creams/lotions? Better than nothing if you need to wear makeup and find yourself needing to reapply sunblock. |

bad bird, in HER WORLD (june or may), they have this sisley all day all year product and one application last 8 hours to protect against uva uvb
have u seen it

Hi Mabsy,
I don't know if the spray works over makeup. If the problem of reapplication over makeup is that it messes up the makeup, then a spray may just do that as well.  |

I'm using the Avene Spray SPF50+. It's runny and definitely wouldn't work the way you speculated Mabsy. I don't spray it directly on my face but rather into my hand and then apply it.
One downside to reapplication is that it's caused acne unless the area is cleansed first. Like Bad Bird, if I'm outdoors for extended periods, I generally don't wear much makeup (never wear foundation in any case). Using a disposable facial cloth or stopping in a restroom to wash up first helps prevent acne. With a dab of blush, lipstick and a bit of concealer, I'm back in business again in 5 minutes. Wearing a hat and sunglasses gives my eyes enough protection (I think), so eye makeup doesn't have to be washed off and redone. |

April,
When I go for my ballet class, I apply Fluide Extreme then use some cornstarch to matte the shine. (My brother will be sending me some Avene from Singapore soon, so I can use that with my LeClerc powder or other makeup if I want to.) I usually perspire like I'm under a shower during my class, so after class, I would splash water on my face to wash off sweat. This emulsifies part of the sunscreen. After patting my face dry and reapplying FE, I'm all ready to go. With the flushing in my cheeks from the exertion and the dewiness from the FE, my skin looks so much better without makeup! |

| Bad bird & m.april - I see what you mean. Having just had a look for SPF mists I noticed that the instructions actually say not to spray it directly on the face. Oh well.... |
