Hello,

I've recently tried the sample of sunblock SPF25 from Yonka. Really like the texture. Neither whiteish nor greasy look.

However, I wish to be further reassured from the "safety" point of view (especially having read so much of the different opinions regarding sunblock on this forum).

So, I went to my Yonka beauty salon today for a nice facial to pamper myself...and ask for the empty packaging box of the Yonka sunblock! I have re-typed every single chemical ingredients down here (what a long list!). Can somebody please tell me if this is a sign-off product by this forum?? Is it a good mineral sunblock?? Thanks a lot!!!!!

Ingredients:
============
water/aqua, octinoxate/ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, PPG-12/SMDI copolymer, titanium dioxide, ceteareth-20, glyceryl stearate, PEG-6 stearate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, PEG-32 stearate, polyacrylamide, glycerin, triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil, vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) extract, acer saccharinum (sugar maple) extract,

Usually they have the active ingredients on the box as well (the actual sunscreen agents)..i see titanium oxide in the group of ingredients..i cant see anything else..im sure someone else could give more feedback.

Hi purple,

Nothing else is really written on the packaging. The pamphlet does claim that this sunblock is PABA free, oxybenzone free and fragrance free.

I guess it is a mineral sunblock, right?

i guess...if its even a block at all...sounds like junk to me. i suggest getting something that shows the percentages of active ingredients...and its nice to know that it doesnt contain unnecessary harsh things like pabas, fragrances...ect.

Hey there

I could *completely* be wrong here as I never wear sunblock, but I think the octinoxate/ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate are the active ingredients in this product (as far as providing the SPF are concerned).

Yonka is a quality brand, and you cant really go wrong. Your list of ingredients shows lots of nice plant extracts and other skin 'goodies' so Im pretty confident that youve made a good choice.

Im actually quite suprised sombody would call this 'rubbish' as Yonka products never tend to be, as with regards to providing sun protection, if it says it does, it does.

With regards to it being a mineral sunblock to be honest I dont actually know what that means. I googled it and found a mineral sunblock which had these ingredients, so you could compare (I personally think that this list is very much inferior to the Yonka one youve listed in your initial post):

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: TITANIUM DIOXIDE. OTHER INGREDIENTS: WATER, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, ETHYLEXYL PALMITATE, GLYCERIN, C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, CETYL PEG/PPG-10/1 DIMETHICONE PETROLATUM, ZEOLITE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, LAURETH-12, MINERAL OIL,POLYSILICONE-11, PPG-3 MYRISTYL ETHER, QUATERNIUM- 18 HECTORITE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, XANTHAN GUM, DISODIUM EDTA, BHT, ETHYLENE BRASSYLATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, ISOPROPYLPARABEN, ISOBUTYLPARABEN, BUTYLPARABEN, IRON OXIDES.

I hope that helps and reassures you somewhat. I think we need to get an aunthority on sunblocks here.

Farouk

yes, those are sunscreen ingredients, but it doesnt sound very photostable to me. Not only this, but plant extracts can be very irritating to the skin; some people think they are making their skin better by using them..personally, if you are sensitive to harsh ingredients, i would opt for something else...its all in opinion though.

Im interested to know why you dont think its photostable - purely from a learning perspective (not because Im questioning you in anyway). Is there an ingredient in particular that you think will deactivate the actives?

What you have said about plant extracts is true - but if your not sensitive to them I would go for a sunscreen that contained them over chemically rubbish anyday.

Thats my 2-cents Wink

Speaking from a person who uses only mineral sunblocks...which some might argue with...i would say this isnt photostable because there are no sufficient sunscreen ingredients to block or reflect/absorb UVB and UVA rays. there are only 3 ingredients that the FDA has approved in the united states that works well for sun protection..these are, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide (both non chemical), and avobenzone(but only when combined with the sunscreen ingredient octisalate(I could be wrong but im pretty sure this is the ingredient)..though there are many other better ingredients i hear that are elsewhere such as Australia and Europe like Tinosorb and Mexoryl that badbird talks a lot about. Personally i cant use avobenzone..so i stick to zinc oxide and titanium oxide for my protection.

Yeah this is true. Do I get a major slap on the wrists Laughing ?

The only time I ever used sun protection (and even this was half-heartedly) was when I went on holiday to Austrailia (2 years ago now!).

Do you think its an absolute must then? Im quite fair skinned for having a pop of Indian descent.

Tell me what you think.

i am shocked but i was trying to be polite. i would have assumed anyone who was interested in skin care would. Smile

how old are you?
coz i do know skincare is kinda like karma. u can good look now and do least possible but once a certain age, along with brain cells, everything goes downhill

sunscreen would help it not go downhill quite as fast

it is a must.!!! i bought the energy beads which i wear as a bracelet around my wrist and saw it changed color even outside on cloudy uk days...and i know..there is no escape from the sunscreen routine! Embarassed

i wish i could be without sunscreen too
oh by the way if you see a chinese walk around uk looking stupid in unmatching UV sunvisor which filters out 99% of sun light, its me.

ACCKK but i guess i like to look ok when i get older..

Anon: Oh dear. I reckon its going to such a hassle finding a product that im going to like with an SPF in it. Im 22 by the way - soon to be 23. I do have a pretty good regime going on at the moment, it just doesnt include any SPF products.

But having said that, La Prairie do an SPF Hydrating Fluid for my skin type...I think Im going to have to kill you for making me want this now. Its so darn expensive!! And you do live in the UK so it doesnt look like ill have too far to search Very Happy

22 going on 23, then its sunblocktime.

when i was 22 going on 23 i had umbrellas in the sun and spf 30..

still see freckles now. URGHH
i like to repeat this
i got more freckles in the one year i am in UK then my tons of years in singapore where i was from

funny you would think. and not possible!!!

then i read there was ozone depletion directly over europe and uk is "europe"

so that explains.
once a freckle start appearing they multiply and multiply and soon you have them as life long buddies! YEEEKS

i don't see teh point of having a good skincare regime without something to stop the damage ? skincare is mainly to protect replenish and keep it good (sort of) but if sun damages it (which you definitely can't see now but its there festering slowly over time beneath the skin where your eyes can't see)
a good skincare won't help

(all my own opinion of course)

Cheers anon

I think your right.

Boots - I could never purchase skincare from Boots - thats for common people Laughing !

Will look into bio oil. I think I might look into Decleor Aromessence for the sun as well. I envisage lots of hours scouring the net to find the perfect product.

Thanks for the info though.

This Yonka sunscreen is definitely junk. It is a combination screen, meaning it is both chemical and physical. The chemical screen is definitely NOT photostable. Not only that, it is not much of a UVA screen. And Purpleturtle is right, too many plant compounds can be irritants to sensitive skin.

And Farouk - I'm surprised that as a doctor, you would term chemicals as "rubbish". I'm actually doubly surprised too that you spend so much on quality skincare but not a penny goes to sunscreen. Isn't prevention better than cure? Wink

Oh well, I am still confused!!

This sunblock does really feel good on the skin and it does not irritate my skin.

Thanks for all of your feedback.

I used to do mountain hiking, and that I used strong mineral sunblock like Uriage, Avene or some "professional" brands for hikers in the Alps. But now what I need is a "citadine" sunblock.

I guess I am just going to ask my dermatologist for the best choice...

Go to cosmeticscop.com and check the suncare section under "Learning". The article is very good to let the consumer know which active ingredients to look for when shopping for a sunscreen. Hope this helps.

I love paula begoun's book of cosmetics..and thats her website as well...i guess some people on here don't like her opinions..but they really help me because i have some seriously sensitive skin, and i dont think shes overreacting when she analyzes every little skin irritant..and my skins so much better now because of it.

Farouk,

You've been so good I'm not going to nag about your not going for the Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Sun Cream SPF30 instead, which is even more expensive. Bad Grin

When you're done with La Prairie (being the skincare junkie you are), how about downgrading to photostable La Roche Posay Anthelios instead, at least just for the sunscreen? Wink Bad Grin
