Having tried out many new things recently, I am now considering saving those little pots and vials for things like travel etc and was wondering how you all clean out those different sample containers. Do you use soap and water, just hot water, run it through the dishwasher etc? Thanks! |

I seldom take the sample, because the BA seldom give me sample |

I washed them out by hand with soap and water using a small bottle brush if necessary and then place the containers in boiling water for just a second. I just want to make sure they get really sanitized. Maybe someone has an easier way. |

I wash them out with hot water and soap and store them away. When I'm ready to fill them I just wisk the vials and tops with alcohol and let air dry for a little while before filling them. |

I'll soak in hot soapy water and then wash out the bottles. I find this helps get rid of all the leftover stuff even in the smallest sample bottles |

I use Arielle's method - now I have all kinds of little pots and containers for either travel or to give away samples of my own! |

What about pipettes? I can never seem to get them clean. Shouldn't they be re-used? |

I think it would depend what you had used it for. I always toss mine though it kills me to 'waste', lol.
If you used it for water or a water based substance I could see giving it a good wash then rinse well with the water then follow-up with a thorough alcohol rinse. Couldn't imagine being able to do that too many times as the plastic is sure to become weaker.

I have ethyl rubbing alcohol (70% by volume) that I use alot for my stuff. Actually - I have a buncha esters, alcohols, yadda, yadda blah blah - lol - 1 day I'll get organized and all sorted as it should be.
But back to the topic. I would fill a small cup about a 1/4 the way and fill the pipette then sqeeze it into a sink a few times.
Now I just toss em after each use.

I do exactly the same. When I travel, I never take full size products, I transfer all my products (even liquid make-up) into the sample containers. |

In the lab and we always throw away the plastic pipets. It's wasteful but we need to make sure things are sanitary and we don't cross contaminate samples, or whatever liquids we are transferring. We soak the glass pipets in water, mixed with mild detergent, overnight. Then we soak and rinse the pipet with water to get rid of the soapy residue. We also had a large bucket, especially designed to soak these pipets so that the entire pipet is emersed in water (this is for the glass pipets). It would be much easier to explain if I had pictures... but I don't have any available. |
