I am sure this has been reviewed before, but since this is my first review I thought I'd try with a product that is new for me.

I started using Dermalogica's Special Cleansing Gel after 2 months of frustration with products that were causing many pimples and comedones. I have had great success in the past with a certain cleanser, but after doing much reading about ingredients in cosmetics, I had decided to try "natural" products that were not laiden with mineral oils, chemicals, FD&C colors, and certain preservatives that have been shown to be toxic and possibly carcinogenic.

The esthetician I went to, suggested Dermalogica products to me. While I would not consider these products to be "natural", the company does seem to limit the use of harsh chemicals and use a more 'natural' ingredient when possible.

The ingredients in this cleanser do contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate --- which can be a bit harsh for some skin; but, as this was not the FIRST ingredient listed, I decided to give it a try.

This cleanser has a nice, light weight texture and foams quite easily (probably due to the SLS). The non-scent is a plus for those who are sensitive to scents --- despite the Lavender Extract it contains. Although this cleanser is more expensive than others, the product would be quite cost effective given the fact that only a tiny amount is actually needed to generate quite a bit of lather (a pea-size or less amount), and the large bottle (16 oz) could last a very long time!

The instructions suggest lathering and rinsing twice, but as I don't use a lot of makeup (Jane Iredale) I didn't find this necessary as it was quite effective at removing every trace of makeup.

Unfortunately, for me this cleanser was too drying. Immediately after patting my skin dry it felt quite uncomfortable and taugt. I tried using a "rich" moisturizer to counteract that tight feeling, but still had some mild tightness that persisted through the night and next morning.

After a few days of using this (evening only), my acne did clear up quite nicely. I had no new clogged pores and the pimples were drying up. However, the tightness I experienced verged on uncomfortable pain, and I began having a few dry patches along side my nose which were quite tender, and some flakiness along my cheeks.

Although Dermalogica states this product can be used on all skin types, this obviously was not the cleanser for me. I would never consider my skin to be normally "dry" and with the 80 degree weather we have been having, I can't account for any other cause of this dryness.

Therefore, my quest for the perfect cleanser continues..... sigh.
